Does anybody have any word on Archie Watkins' future with the Inspirations? He only sang 1 or 2 songs with them on Saturday night and another tenor sang the rest of the time. The other tenor opened the set and then Archie came up later. Is this a sign of the future or was Archie just having vocal strain?

I saw the Inspirations a few weeks ago. Archie was not there at the time, but I talked to Mike and he told me it was touch and go as to his future. I think an arrangement similar to Jack Laws is probably what we can expect.

Fortunately, the have a GREAT replacement for Archie. Daryl is a terrific tenor, and he's done a great job in Archie's absence.

Back in April or May, when they sang in Stephenson Alabama we were there. Archie wasn't and someone asked Melton where he was. Melton said he had had throat surgery for polyps and that it had been very painful. Maybe this new arrangement will help his voice a lot. Daryl does an excellent job as a filler. And yes they sounded wonderful with The Primitive backing them. I wish they would travel with a bigger band or use a recording to back them up musically. By the way was " My Lord's Been Walking" their new song?

Their new song for what? Radio? I don't know, I sure hope so. "If You Only Knew" is #1 for the next charting period according to Martin. "My Lord's Been Walking" is my favorite track from "Things Are Different Now," the latter of which I believe could possibly be the very best recording this group has ever done.

Has there been any point in the last 2 years when Archie was the Inspirations' sole tenor for an extended period of a couple of months? Or has he solely been a specialty vocalist that whole time? If he's been a specialty vocalist, they really need to accept the tenor as a group member and put his photo and voice on their CDs (along with Archie's).

Archie's been singing tenor full-time for 43 years...a rarity in SGM. Personally, if Archie retires, I think he will retire completely from the road, as--and I'm not completely sure about this--he does not play a musical instrument, unlike Jack Laws. To be honest, I'm more worried about Ron Hutchins, the group's former lead singer and web guru...he hasn't updated their site in some time. He had battled TB in the past. I pray that he is well. Hey, Archie's induction into the SGMA Hall of Fame next month will be the pinnacle of a great ministry....if I were him, I wouldn't feel bad at all about retiring on that note!

They first recorded that song on their 8th album with Mark V Records, The Next Step You Take. Archie hit some high notes on that original!

Several of us in this forum discussed this very topic several months ago...I predicted that Archie would probably retire in the near future, as his voice has been showing signs of strain for quite some time. Their more recent albums--those on the Horizon label, especially--have been sung in slightly lower keys, probably to ease the strain on Archie's voice. Although, he pleasantly surprised me on Things Are Different Now. I also predicted that Martin would likely retire some time soon, which leads me to speculate as to the future of the group: Mike is singing some of the best bass of his life, and Matt and Melton are relatively "young pups," compared to the others. If this Daryl fellow (and I honestly know nothing about him!) were to come on as full-time tenor, and if they were to get another ivory-tickler, I predict that The Inspirations could last well past the 50 year mark! Martin would still serve as manager, I bet! He's one of the best in the business. I can see it now: Mike Holcomb & The New Inspirations!!! Come to think of it, they'd probably just leave well enough alone.

I understand the Inspirations' rules of incorporation provide that when one or two members leave, the next most senior members take over management of the group. That said, I'm sure Mike Holcomb, Matt, and Melton are gentlemen and would consent to give up their right to continue the name if Archie and Martin so wished.

I'm probably the farthest thing from an Archie Watkins fan. Sorry. However, I have to give him kudos: Archie has, for years, understood his limitations and sung within them. He never fell into the trap that has ruined many tenors, trying to sing out of their range and "stripping the gears". Archie never did that. My hat is off to him in that regard.

The group is set up as a corporation, and no one completely own it. I wouldn't see why they lose the name if Martin retired - I'm sure he'd still have a hand in things. When I saw them in Charlotte back in June, they had the assistant pastor from Mike's church singing with them. Thought his name was Darren though. Anyway, he fits in well with the group, as I've seen him twice with them. This also begs the question: If a group has a fill-in, do they all go buy new matching suits? quote:

From the Inspirations' inception in 1964, Martin knew Archie's range and never made him to sing beyond it. He carefully selected the appropriate key that the songs were to be sung in for that exact reason...he said as much in Bob Terrell's What a Wonderful Time!. Martin confessed in the same book that he almost ruined Archie's voice during the 1970s, when Archie, Eddie Deitz, and Troy Burns would do The Smoky Mountain Trio arrangements in concert...Archie would sing soprano then!

Whatever his future holds, I wish Archie Watkins the best. Same goes for Darrin.... He's a great guy!
