Awwww, eaglelady...it's hard for me to believe that you really can't sing. I'm a voice teacher! On occasion I find a person who refuses to sing, or someone who has been singing monotone for so long they can't match pitch, (which can be remedied with work) but never someone who truly cannot sing. At my school there are LOTS of 1 hour classes. You should be able to find something. shallbe , ,

Who need's an edgeumacation anyhow? *laughing* Please tell me someone else felt this way their first day to start school after many years of being out....... Hey, shallberebuilt, I had a piano teacher give up teaching after a few weeks with me....lol, for real! I actually had several years of Piano as a kid before that, still can't play, the guy was close to retirement anyway and I guess I just encouraged him to go ahead and retire. He always had a look of pain on his face while I was playing *shrugs shoulders*. I took voice for 2 years from a private instructor..... still can't sing.

My first day back after many years of no school wasn't that bad, but the second semester forced me to learn about 30 new terms for the first chapter. Some definitions so similar I almost gave up! This semester, I have an oral report Tuesday that I'm still struggling to put together - and I've known about it for over a week already. I just can't seem to figure out what to say. It's going to be a llloonngg weekend .....

Why, oh why did I decide to order eBooks?? Did I really think they would be worth the reduced cost?? I've had a lot of problems with CourseSmart the past couple of weeks because my books won't download. I have absolutely no access to my books, and am already late on one of my tests as a result!!! Grrr!! Probably the best way to save, besides exchanging books with other students, is to buy them used on half.com or some other site. quote:

But hang in there, it will get easier to handle. No, the coursework will get tougher, but you won't notice... much. Actually, as you get into your major course of study, it gets much more interesting. I'd been out of school for 10 years before starting into this program, and it took me about a year before I really felt like a full-fledged student... getting into the habit of studying, and all.

I'm now into my second semester here, and doing pretty well, grade-wise. But now, since I'm not whimpering and whining, it's time to add a bit to the stress: preparing for the GRE, since I'm going to apply for grad school starting in fall of 2010. No, make that SCHOOLS, since my program is at two, and I have to be accepted at both. No, I DON'T know what I'm doing, is there a problem with that?

I am going to college for the first time, and I am 30. I did everything backwards, kids and husband first. I have been in college for 1 year now, and have a 3.8 GPA, had a 4.0 until a couple months ago when I got my first B. This is the thing, I am in a Math class right, and it is just basic math, but I am horrible at math. I failed my first test, but lucky so did 5 others, so he graded on a curve, and that bummed me up to a C. So we start new stuff tonight, and I have no clue. I have go over and over it, I feel so stupid. I am afaird I am going to fail, and part of me wants to throw my hands up in the hair and drop out. I have 4 children, and work full time, and go to school full time. I feel a mental break down coming on. I can do anything but math. I could use some good advice.

You'll do fine, Darcy! I graduate in May, and turn in my applications packets for my grad programs next week. I got accepted to the universities, now I just have to make it into one of the programs. Both only offer spaces to 25-30% of the applicants, so I'm really hoping that working my tush off to preserve my GPA pays off! At least the GRE is waived for both programs I want since I'm above a 3.8. That's nice, at least!

Rise, hang in there! Tough classes can be beat, but it does take time. Don't panic - review and talk to the professor if you can. Most professors are willing to help, or can give you the name of a tutor or classmate who can help. I will have math this summer and fall. Summer is a basic review for the Fall class. I'm hoping my HS students can help me get through them, cause I know Math (algebra stuff) is tough for me.

Welcome, intheworks. My first test is this week. I'm feeling very unprepared for this one. He'll give us a study guide, though. When I get it, maybe I won't feel so bad.

In my 4th week online at a community college. Feeling a bit more relaxed as at first it was hectic trying to grasp what the time frame was for assignements etc. Now Im starting to get lined out and developing my schedule for study. I am so glad I'm doing this. 20 years ago I didn't want to go to college because I did not want to study things like govenrment and Comp 1 & 2. Those are my favorite classes now!

Hello Lady Ashes, First; define basic please? Second; what level of math are your kids in? Third; When I am struggling with a class I will hire a tutor.... you may think this is expensive...its not, use the O'l fashioned barter system... Example: I'm a nerd/Geek, I love Computers and am fairly good at using them and building/repairing them, so I found someone who was having trouble with their computer and after starting to help them fix it asked if they knew anything about my subject matter i was struggling in.... you know, what, they just pulled an " A " out of it and were happy to trade services! SHAZAAM! Recieved an " A " myself ;) If that doesn't work, talk to the Instructor and let them know you are struggling, they will tend to be understanding, and most (not all mind you), will be happy to work with a Working Mom with munchkins! Just a thought, and who knows, may make a new friend <grins>. I hope this helps you! God Bless and Stay the Course!!!!! -Kell

RisefromtheAshes - I agree with Kellgaste concerning tutoring. Also, is there a math lab at your college? Most colleges have them - and usually the tutoring there is free. You can probably do math, but you might have to discover how you learn it best. It might be a subject for you that you'll have to give more attention to than your others. That's cool - we all have subjects like that. I'm taking a break from graduate school right this semester. I've been rethinking a lot of this - clarifying a lot of things. I'm close to finishing and will probably do that, but I so want to develop as an artist and this school is not helping me with that. I'm frustrated mostly. I want to have lots of artistic assignments, I want to learn and explore and grow. But it doesn't seem like I'm doing that. It is tough to just do it on your own because there is no feedback. I was reading someone's poetry not too long ago. A lot of it was pretty bad (there were a few really nice pieces in there though). He was working in a vacuum - no feedback - so he saw all of them as being equally good. I told him about the pieces that I really liked, but didn't say anything about the other things because I didn't want to be negative about it. I am afraid that people would do that to me as well - that perhaps my music or writing might be horrible, but I'm getting no real feedback. I want the criticism because I want to grow. I enrolled in an MFA program hoping to get that, but instead the professors are running it like an MA program - lots of ideas and theories and research opportunities - but no real development of talent. The classes are an afterthought while the professors spend the time doing the things they really want to do. I dropped one class when it became clear that the professor was doing it only because he was on his way out of the door and he wanted to gather data to help him in his next job. It was good for me in some ways - I clarified a lot of things and it got me out of my "will-I-or-won't-I-go-to-grad-school" rut. But now I see I need a totally different program. I've spent a lot of money already on this degree - but it isn't doing anything for me - it is just a piece of paper. If I made myself available to them, I could get the degree for free (I'd just have to do lots of TA work), but again, it would be yet another delay. I'm tired of delays and making due until I can get to the place where I can actually do something. I don't have a lot of time. I just don't want to go forward in it. Instead, I want to spend the time developing and working on my gifts and talents. I don't know how another school would see me though if I didn't finish this degree ... would they be willing to accept me? I don't know. I'm pretty frustrated!

GNM, you're on my prayer list, fyi. You can do this! One of the cool things is that you've already got all your coping mechanisms and organization in place. That's what happened with me: I started with less hours, going to school only two days a week. As I began to understand what it was going to take, I was able to expand to 3 days a week, and now 4. And in all actuality, this is my last hard semester: everything from here on out is downhill. My classes are going well: 1/3 of the semester has gone by and I'm carrying high As in everything. My worst weekend was this one, and it's almost over. Now I have to really get started on my 15 page research paper for Music History, and keep doing what I'm doing. I have all the projects for the wedding pretty much lined out--I will alter the wedding dress over one of my spring breaks coming up, work on flowers the other spring break (none of mine lined up this year! Three weeks of partial spring breaks, ugh.) My main classes will end a couple of weeks before the wedding, so I will have time to prepare. Then, I'm taking the first summer semester OFF!!! After that, it's French in the second summer semester, French and Senior Recital and an exit course in the Fall, and GRADUATION! shallbe

ORIGINAL: Grace-N-Mercy How's everyone doing in their classes right now? I'm going to be up for a while and can pray for any and all requests!! well, today I am caught up. I have two majors papers written and read the chapters I needed to read this week. I find that if I don't read and write everyday, I fall behind. I did go to church today and played the harp and relaxed. tomorrow it starts again. and I am kind of scared to say this, but I am unemployed, but financially okay right now, so I am appreciating the time I get to do homework and practice. oh and French, I took it in high school; I would love to take it again.

Sounds like everyone is busy! I just had my first round of exams this week. This has been a touch semester already. But, I graduate in May, so I see the light at the end of this particular tunnel! I'd love prayers about my grad school situation. I submitted my packet yesterday and got quite a shock when I did. Because of budget cuts, they will only be offering 10 positions in the fall. 10!! She said they will have between 75 and 80 applicants, and well over half will be eliminated right off the bat for "less than stellar" GPA's and recommendations. I have an excellent GPA and very good letters from very respected professors there, so have no doubt I'll make the initial 2 or 3 cuts. But there are bound to be more than 10 students with top grades/recommendations, so it will probably come down to luck of the draw in the end. There is only one other university close enough for me to commute to that offers this program, so I have just one back up option. It's very nerve-wracking and will be 2 months before I know.

I am keeping y'all in prayer even if I haven't posted. Shallbe -- you're amazing... classes AND a wedding. Wow! I can imagine that's a lot of work. eaglelady -- I'm sorry you're unemployed, but that's wonderful you get to spend so much time on your classes. I used to fantasize that I would lose my job so I could just study instead, but then I looked at my budget... needless to say, no more wishing!! Karlie -- I'll pray about your situation. I know you've worked hard to keep up the GPA and it sounds like you'd be perfect for the program, so I pray that others are able to see that, too. My son is finally into his major classes at his university, and after one of his tests, the instructor approached him and encouraged him to go on to graduate school (which was in his plans, anyway). I'm sure he appreciated hearing that confirmation!! Well, it looks like I won't be able to take the intensive in the Summer as I'd planned, but will take it in the Fall. I guess that's good, I really do need the Individual Appraisal class before taking it, and I'm really looking forward to Career Counseling (both prereqs). Plus, the class I'm taking now is fascinating! I just got the DVD's and one of the books and I'm already getting started. My biggest prayer need is endurance. Things have picked up significantly at work: my caseload, the level of demand, the driving!! I need to remember to keep things in balance because if I don't, it'll start a slow downward spiral, and how good will I be to anybody then?
