Andy was way ahead of his time when he said to Barney: "You need to get yourself a room." Man, I am soooooo glad somebody else mentioned this. I noticed it forever but was just afraid I had a dirty mind. After all, the 1960's censors were quite stringent....

They also let those scenes with Andy in his boxers slide by. Remember when Andy pretended that he had taken out Juanita. Barney: "My Juanita?" Andy: "She's everybody's Juanita."

79. Man In A Hurry This is usually ranked high in the polls of "favorite episodes", and for good reason. It captures the spirit of Mayberry perfectly and has many great little scenes and dialogue moments. It begins with a car breaking down outside town on a Sunday morning and a well dressed man, Malcolm Tucker, walking two miles into a deserted Mayberry. Everyone, presumably, is at church, which is where Mrs. Tucker finds Andy. As the congregation is leaving, the pastor (who is also named Tucker) notes that Barney was nodding off. Andy relates that he had Barney on stakeout because they got word that a particular man was going to lift some chickens. Reverend Tucker is distressed - he is going to have supper at that man's house that very evening. Andy takes Mr. Tucker over to Wally's service station, where Gomer Pyle is in charge. This is Gomer's first appearance (though not chronologically) and he is portrayed as not mechanical, though he is studying to be a doctor. Gomer's life is simple "You bring your car up here, and I'll fill her up with gas." Wally doesn't work on Sunday (although he apparently has no qualms about keeping the station open) and, while he diagnoses the problem with the car (from his own description of the sound) he refuses to work on it until Monday. Wally's New England accent is one of the many charming mysteries of Mayberry. A desperate Mr. Tucker, with urgent business in Charlotte, steals Gomer's truck and heads to Charlotte. Andy, as is common in southern law enforcement officers, doesn't charge Mr. Tucker with a crime. He just gives him a warning and takes him home for dinner. Mr. Tucker is driven to distraction because he can't use the telephone. Seems the entire town lets the Mendlebright sisters tie up the party line every Sunday afternoon since one is in Mt. Pilot and the other in Mayberry. They mostly talk about their feet falling asleep. Barney says (twice): "I wonder what causes that." (It was their high button shoes being too tight.) Mr. Tucker refuses to eat, but seems to mellow out as Andy plays and sings Church In the Wildwood. Unfortunately, Gomer has located his (unseen in this episode) Cousin Goober, who is the only person besides Wally who can fix the car. As Mr. Tucker impatiently waits he snaps as Barney as Barney famously repeats three times: "That's the plan. Go home, take a nap, then over to Thelma Lou's house and watch a little TV." Finally the car is fixed (it was a clogged fuel line) and Mr. Tucker is on his way. However, everyone has been so nice: Goober and Gomer won't accept money, Aunt Bee fixes a meal for the road, Opie gies him a lucky penny, etc., that Mrs. Tucker pretends to hear a noise in the engine and, with Andy's cooperation, determines that he has to spend the night. Opie is once again excited that he gets to sleep on an ironing board between two chairs: "That's adventure sleeping!" Apparently the Taylor guest room is out of commission and the living room sofa is off limits. A very touching closing scene where Barney and Andy decided to go into town for a bottle of pop, and leave Mr. Tucker serenely asleep in a rocking chair, holding a freshly peeled apple.

My wife gave me an autographed picture of Barney for Christmas one year. I have it in my office where it can be seen as people exit down a hallway. It gets a lot of positive comments.

80. High Noon In Mayberry. I consider this an "underrated" episode because it has several great comic moments, but is not usually voted as a favorite when polls are conducted. One of the fine comic moments is at the beginning when the postman, Billy Ray (played by great character actor Dub Taylor), refuses to hand Andy and Barney the mail because they are not an "authorized receptacle". An angry Barney warns Billy Ray that he better not catch him double parked, which prompts the postman to quote all the vehicles that a mail truck has precedence over. Barney (ironically) observes that if you give some people a uniform it goes straight to their heads. Barney then opens a letter and is pleased to announce that the company he invested in has declared a dividend. When a surprised Andy says he didn't know Barney was an investor, Barney reveals that he owns 1/8 of a share, with Floyd, Goober, and some of the boys. The next letter reveals the main plot. A man that Andy wounded in a shootout after a robbery writes that he is coming to Mayberry to "set things right". Barney assumes that the ex-convict, Luke Comstock, is coming to kill Andy. A phone call interrupts, and Andy tells Barney he has to get Mrs. Peterson's cat, Fluffy, off the roof again. An exasperated Barney doesn't think Andy should waste his time. Andy says: "Well, Fluffy has kittens, and you know how you feel, seeing your mother on the roof. When Barney tries to get Andy to carry a gun, Andy replies: "I won't need that Barn, Fluffy and I have been friends for years. Barney then decides to deputize Otis and Gomer to protect Andy 24/7. Otis isn't too keen on the idea and resists. When Barney offers them a chance to leave, both head for the door, but Barney makes them come back and be deputized. When a worried Otis says that none of them are too good at this protection thing, including Barney, Barney says that shouldn't worry, that Andy will be there the whole time to look out for them. So the three stooges undertake to provide full time protection for Andy. Gomer is worried that the white thread running through his brown suit wasn't "plain enough" for the plain clothes operation. Otis gets a pot of water dumped on him under Aunt Bee's window. Andy finally gets his "protecters" to back off. Then the bus arrives and out steps a limping Luke Comstock, carrying a shotgun case. At the Taylor house, a touching scene ensues as Andy sends Opie and Aunt Bee next door, but not before another touching scene about fear with Opie. Andy even gets a revolver off the top of the hutch and begins to load it as ominous music plays. He finally decides to put the gun away and have a cigarette instead. Aunt Bee calls Barney on the sly. When Luke arrives at Andy's house, Andy lets him in. Luke explains how, while flat on his back in the hospital for six months, with his leg ruined for life, he begins to think of the wrong decisions that led him there. While in prison, he began to study math and electricity, leading to his owning a chain of television repair stores in Cleveland and living a good life. Luke has come to thank Andy and bring him a nice shotgun as a gift. Barney and his crack deputies mistakenly believe that Luke has gotten the drop on Andy. Barney unscrews a fuse and the power goes off. Andy and Luke go outside and fix the fuse as a commotion ensues in the living room. They find Barney, Gomer and Otis all tied up with the rope they brought, including their guns. A puzzled Luke asks what is going on. Andy replies: "This is the Mayberry knot tying class...meets here every Tuesday...that's a nice 'un you got there boys."

I have been catching some episodes (or at least parts of them) on the almost weekly marathons on TV Land, and have come to a surprising conclusion - Tafkam was right. He had mentioned that he didn't see what Andy saw in Helen and, upon reflection, I agree. She rarely seems in a good mood and is often angry. Too bad Ellie couldn't have been around for the duration.

I agree too, Kerr. Helen's pleasant looking enough, but she didn't do much with it. I'd have preferred Ellie too. But I am an Eleanor Donahue fan.

I liked Peggy best. Ellie would have been a second choice if I had written the show.
