Jersey may be the only one left. The idea of changing it comes up every once in a while, but never gets very far.

Do you know what reasoning they give for the law. Is it a safety issue, or something to prevent gas station workers from losing their jobs?

Oh, so the law is just for Bill. I missed that part. Makes sense now.

They're called "Bills" for a reason - didn't you ever wonder about that.

IF I remember correctly, Oregon or Washington still have full service stations too.

ETA: I googled it and got this article

We have aldi's here ~ and they do have some really good ranges. It's worth trying and seeing what you like and don't because you can save a bunch of money!

Last time I saw a someone who 'pumped your gas' (here) was around 20 years ago in the city I lived in then. That was the exception to the rule though. Even growing up, I don't remember any. I do recall a couple of places in the US where you had to go in a buy a certain amount of 'gas' before they turned the pump on and you got what you paid for.

Bill, you can't pump your own gas?!?!?!?
Nope. First time I pulled into a station outside of NJ I sat for like 10 minutes before I realized I had to get out and do it myself. To me that's the height of inconvenience, so I'm wondering if Kath has to get out to pump gas, and if she finds it more inconvenient than bagging her groceries.

I do pump my own gas. I don't mind it in the summer but boy I hate to do it in the winter. The wind just goes right though me. Since my minivan bit the dust we drive one car now, (we do have a mega, 15 passenger gas guzzling van we don't drive much) and Larry keeps the gas filled.

But I really don't mind it. I've had to do it since the mid seventies so I'm used to it. And it takes just as much time if I fill the tank as if someone did it for me.

But sacking my own groceries? I really did feel pressure with the kind that has the groceries sit at the end of the stand, and ...OK I know that doesn't make sense. YOu know how they scan the groceries and push them to the end of the thing, whatever that is called? one store I went in had it divided in half and you had to hurry and sack while the other persons stuff was getting scanned and pushed down next to yours. It was awful. Another store just puts them back in a cart, like sams does, and then you take the cart over to the wall with a bunch of places to sack your groceries. Not so bad but still, it takes forever. It would probably add ten-fifteen minutes to the time it takes me to shop And if you sack them while they are getting scanned, how can you keep track of what they are ringing up? I'd just a'soon have my groceries sacked while the cashier is scanning them.

I tell 'em to wait if they start getting impatient! They don't like it, but they don't have much choice. After all, the customer is always right!

I gotta ask... how can you keep track that they're putting your groceries in the bags to put in your trolley?

I always check my receipt when I get home (never used to, but do now) and have no problem complaining if they've scanned something twice and I've always got a refund on it.

And if they're too heavy handed when they're scanning my fruit and veg, they get told off! Even potatoes can bruise!

I don't know, I just watch. They don't move that fast :) It's just one sacker per lane, and I always check to make sure there is nothing left behind. I even watch to make sure they don't put raw meat in with precooked meat or veggies.

I don't even like having to take them to my car myself. I guess I figure that is what they are getting paid for.

I don't know why I don't mind hauling purchases from walmart out, I guess because of the lower prices and that's always been the way it is. But the grocery store costs more for the same product so they ought to carry it out.

It does drive me nuts when they put raw meat in with ready to eat items like deli. One guy even argued with me because I wanted the bacon in with the raw meat. He said it's cured, not raw. Well, if I would not eat it in the condition I bought it, then it's raw. I should not have to argue with a carry out guy and that is what I said to him. So then just to be evil he tried to put the eggs on top of the bread but I caught it. He doesn't work there anymore, but I didn't report him.

I just thought that I would comment on this post. I used to work as a bagger at a Supermarket back in the day. They never gave any formal training at all. I was only shown how to put things in the bags and that was it. They never said anything about which stuff should go together and which shouldn't at all.

I hate the plastic bags.

Bring back paper sacks!

You obviously don't need to scoop cat litter.

I agree with you there, Kerrlaw. Before I started raising foster kittens the only plastic bags I kept were the ones from WalMart because they are the thickest. Now I keep all the plastic bags I get that don't end up with any holes.

New Jersey and Oregon. I took a trip to Oregon last year and it was weird to have gas pumped for us.

~~~~~~~~~
I have never been to an Aldis as I don't think they have them in Nevada.
My grandma used to shop at a place that made everyone bag their own grociers, and I had to help.
Now the only time I bag my own stuff is when I go to the self-check out line.
You can go either way here, but I do not remember the last time that someone pumped gas at a station though, it all seems to be self-service instead.
Mike - I figured there was no training. And I have told people for years little things like 'put cleaners in their own bag so that if they open, it doesn't contaminate the food' and lately I am just told 'well, this bottle won't leak' rather than the customer is right.
I get not knowing, I don't get not wanting to learn.
If we pay about 5 cents more a gallon, there are still places that will pump the gas. But they are few and far between.
I learned by trial and error. It took a while and some annoyed customers telling me not to mix cleaners with other products to figure out what I was doing. I should've known better, but I am dense sometimes.
Well, how would you know.
My kids do - why? Because they hear me complain about it being wrong. I'll bet you never heard your mom say 'boy, these were packed perfectly' but they probably were.
Oh - today is the last day for "For Better or For Worse"
Well, I suppose there will be a Sunday one, but they are different.
Today is the last daily.
I was overwhelmed. But it is a girly reaction. BigBee managed to contain his laughter.
Nope Momma, never heard that at all. I guess I thought with things with bleach and such was that they were sealed so they were no threat a all. I also learned not to put 10 bottles of soda in one bag either.
Well at the time the store that I worked at had plastic over paper bags. So I would take the plastic handles and lift it only for the plastic ties to break instead. Then one day I realized "gee, maybe I should only put 4 in at a time instead."
