Take Time Out to Chill Out

“In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” - Isaiah 30:15

“You should never take on more work than you can cover in believing prayer.” - Dr. Alan Redpath

In our “always in a hurry world,” it is even more essential for us to take time out to recharge our spiritual batteries. We do this by taking time to pray (how we talk to God) and read the bible (how God speaks to us). Having a few moments for your daily devotions will give you the strength and encouragement you need today. Jesus did this often. In Mark 1:35, it states: “Very early in the morning while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.” Wow! If Jesus needed to do this, how much more do you and I?

Take time today. Remember: “Praise the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens.” (Psalm 68:19)

I need to remember to do this every morning, not just on Sundays. Thanks for your encouraging words today, Santa!

Catching Wild Pigs

A chemistry professor in a large college had some
exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in
the lab the Professor noticed one young man (exchange student) who
kept rubbing his back, and stretching as if his back hurt.

The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The
student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been
shot while fighting communists in his native country who were
trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new
communist government.

In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and
asked a strange question. He asked, 'Do you know how to catch
wild pigs?'

The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch
line. The young man said this was no joke. 'You catch wild pigs
by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the
ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the
free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a
fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming.

When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn
again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to
that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all
four sides of the fence up with a gate in The last side. The
pigs, who are used to the free corn, start to come through the
gate to eat, you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd.

Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run
around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon
they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it
that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for
themselves, so they accept their captivity.

The young man then told the professor that is exactly what
he sees happening to America . The government keeps pushing us
toward socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the
form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for
unearned income, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments
not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc.. While we
continually lose our freedoms -- just a little at a time.

One should always remember: There is no such thing as a free
lunch! Also, a politician will never provide a service for you
cheaper than you can do it yourself.

Also, if you see that all of this wonderful government
'help' is a problem confronting the future of democracy in
America , you might want to send this on to your friends. If you
think the free ride is essential to your way of life then you
will probably delete this email, but God help you when the gate
slams shut!

In this 'very important' election year, listen closely to
what the candidates are promising you !!

Just maybe you will be able to tell who is about to slam
the gate on America .

'A government big enough to give you everything you want, is
big enough to take away everything you have.' - Thomas Jefferson

No Reflection On Me

All stories copyright 2008 Bob Perks
Today's message:
"No Reflection on Me"
Bob Perks

"The moon's an arrant thief,
And her pale fire she snatches from the sun."
William Shakespeare

I"m not much for Shakespeare. I read it and sit there looking
stupid or if in good company, I place my finger on my chin and
pretend to be pondering the depth of it all.

Still, I can't help thinking poetically and philosophically
when I am face to face with the moon.

I am a child of the moon and find myself forever connected
to it.

Whenever my children go away on vacation I remind them to look
at the moon and I will too. Perhaps at the same time.

"I'll be looking at the moon...I'll be seeing you!"

A line from one of my favorite songs.

The last few nights I have danced with the moon in the early
evening. I and my three dogs step outside for one last
look. I bring with me a big flashlight so I can scan the back
yard for lions and tigers, oh, my!. Okay, rabbits, maybe deer or a
wandering bear.

Once I see it clear, I let Ricky, Lucy and Phil run free.

I stand in the middle of the yard about halfway up the incline
with my arms open wide and ready to take flight, if God should
ever answer that age old prayer of mine which would enable me
to soar above the trees and return without anyone knowing.

I remain grounded for 58 years.

What I am about to share with you is nothing new for me. I have
done it hundreds of times before. Still, now that I am in the
wisdom of my years, this night held a special meaning for me.

When I was a child, before going to sleep at night, I would pull
a flashlight out from under my pillow and, shining it on the wall
and ceiling, I would sing "When the Moon Goes Over the Mountain."
Slowly shining the small beam of light from horizon to horizon
until complete, I would then end it by singing the "Star Spangled
Banner."

I did not sing this night. I simply raised my flashlight and shined
the light back on the moon. This has been a ritual of mine for
years. It's my way of saying thanks. My way of letting the moon
know that I saw it.

Thus the opening quote. The moon is a reflection of the sun.
Because the sun has so much to give, it is passed on to the moon,
and reflected back on us.

But isn't that the way it should be?

To be the light in someone's life.

To shine so bright they pass it on.

To be the sun and moon in a world of
darkness.

We owe the moon for sharing the light when we cannot see it.

Join with me tonight to say thanks. Bring out the torchlight,
candle or match and tell the moon "hello."

If you think it will not make a difference, behold that when the
moon is dark, the stars shine even brighter.

"I believe in you!"
Bob

I think I have posted this before but it is a good story: (HANKY ALERT)

THE OLD FISHERMAN

Our house was directly across the street from the clinic entrance of
Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. We lived downstairs and rented the
upstairs rooms to out-patients at the Clinic.

One summer evening as I was fixing supper, there was a knock at the door
I opened it to see a truly awful looking man. 'Why, he's hardly taller
than my eight-year-old,' I thought as I stared at the stooped, shriveled
body.

But the appalling thing was his face, lopsided from swelling, red and
raw, yet his voice was pleasant as he said, 'Good evening. I've come to
see if you've a room for just one night. I came for a treatment this
morning from the eastern shore, and there's no bus 'till morning.'

He told me he'd been hunting for a room since noon but with no success;
no one seemed to have a room. 'I guess it's my face. I know it looks
terrible, but my doctor says with a few more treatments..'

For a moment I hesitated, but his next words convinced me: 'I could
sleep in this rocking chair on the porch. My bus leaves early in the
morning. I told him we would find him a bed, but to rest on the porch.
I went inside and finished getting supper. When we were ready, I asked
the old man if he would join us. 'No thank you. I have plenty' And he
held up a brown paper bag.

When I had finished the dishes, I went out on the porch to talk with him
A few minutes. It didn't take a long time to see that this old man had
an oversized heart crowded into that tiny body. He told me he fished for
A living to support his daughter, her five children and her husband, who
was hopelessly crippled from a back injury.

He didn't tell it by way of complaint; in fact, every other sentence was
prefaced with thanks to God for a blessing. He was grateful that no pain
accompanied his disease, which was apparently a form of skin cancer. He
thanked God for giving him the strength to keep going.

At bedtime, we put a camp cot in the children's room for him. When I got
up in the morning, the bed linens were neatly folded, and the little man
was out on the porch.

He refused breakfast, but just before he left for his bus, haltingly, as
if asking a great favor, he said,
'Could I please come back and stay the next time I have a treatment? I
won't put you out a bit. I can sleep fine in a chair.' He paused a
moment and then added, 'Your children made me feel at home. Grownups are
bothered by my face, but children don't seem to mind.' I told him he was
welcome to come again.

And on his next trip he arrived a little after seven in the morning. As
A gift, he brought a big fish and a quart of the largest oysters I had
ever seen. He said he had shucked them that morning before he left so.
that they'd be nice and fresh. I knew his bus left at 4 a.m., and I
wondered what time he had to get up in order to do this for us.

In the years he came to stay overnight with us there was never a time
that he did not bring us fish or oysters or vegetables from his garden.

Other times we received packages in the mail, always by special
delivery; fish and oysters packed in a box of fresh young spinach or
kale, every leaf carefully washed. Knowing that he must walk three miles
to mail these and knowing how little money he had made the gifts doubly
precious.

When I received these little remembrances, I often thought of a comment
our next-door neighbor made after he left that first morning. 'Did you
keep that awful looking man last night? I turned him away! You can lose
roomers by putting up such people!'

Maybe we did lose roomers once or twice But, oh! If only they could have
known him, perhaps their illness would have been easier to bear. I know
our family always will be grateful to have known him; from him we
learned what it was to accept the bad without complaint and the good
with gratitude to God.

Recently I was visiting a friend who has a greenhouse. As she showed me
her flowers, we came to the most beautiful one of all, a golden
Chrysanthemum, bursting with blooms. But to my great surprise, it was
growing in an old dented, rusty bucket. I thought to myself, 'If this
were my plant, I'd put it in the loveliest container I had!'

My friend changed my mind. 'I ran short of pots,' she explained, 'and
knowing how beautiful this one would be, I thought it wouldn't mind
starting out in this old pail. It's just for a little while, till I can
put it out in the garden.'

She must have wondered why I laughed so delightedly, but I was imagining
just such a scene in heaven. There's an especially beautiful one,' God
might have said ! when he came to the soul of the sweet old fisherman.
'He won't mind starting in this small body.'

All this happened long ago -- and now, in God's garden, how tall this
lovely soul must stand.

The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the
outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.'

“See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body…” – James 3:5b-6b

How serious a muscle I have hidden away inside my mouth. My mind may think something, but the fire can’t start until my tongue begins to flap out of control. What a raging tool or calming tool our tongues can be. I must remember that it can’t do anything apart from me allowing it!

The tongue is a wonderful instrument to express my love to Jesus and His truths to others. May we use it for that purpose alone. “You are worthy, You are great, You’re my everything! I love You Jesus.” Yes, that’s good use of this little muscle in my mouth! How about using that little muscle to brag on our Lord? He’s waiting to hear from you.

Cancel your credit card before you die..........(hilarious!)

Now some people are really stupid!!!!
Be sure and cancel your credit cards before you die.

This is so priceless, and so, so easy to see happening,
customer service being what it is today.

A lady died this past January, and Citibank billed her for February and March for their annual service charges on her credit card, and added late fees and interest on the monthly charge. The balance had been $0.00 when she died, but now somewhere around $60.00. A family member placed a call to Citibank.

Here is the exchange :

Family Member: 'I am calling to tell you she died back in January.'

Citibank : 'The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply.'

Family Member : 'Maybe, you should turn it over to collections.'

Citiban k : 'Since it is two months past due, it already has been.'

Family Member : So, what will they do when they find out she is dead?'

Citibank : 'Either report her account to frauds division or report her to the credit bureau, maybe both!'

Family Member : 'Do you think God will be mad at her?'

Citibank: 'Excuse me?'

Family Member : 'Did you just get what I was telling you -
the part about her being dead?'

Citibank : 'Sir, you'll have to speak to my supervisor.'

Supervisor gets on the phone:

Family Member : 'I'm calling to tell you, she died back in January with a $0 balance.'

Citibank : 'The account was never closed and late fees and charges still apply.'

Family Member : 'You mean you want to collect from her estate?'

Citibank : (Stammer) 'Are you her lawyer?'

Family Member : 'No, I'm her great nephew.' (Lawyer info was given)

Citibank: 'Could you fax us a certificate of death?'

Family Member : 'Sure.' (Fax number was given )

After they get the fax :

Citibank : 'Our system just isn't setup for death.
I don't know what more I can do to help.'

Family Member : 'Well, if you figure it out , great!
If not, you could just keep billing her. She won't care.'

Citibank: 'Well, the late fees and charges do still apply.'
(What is wrong with these people?!?)

Family Member : 'Would you like her new billing address?'

Citibank : 'That might help..'

Family Member : ' Odessa Memorial Cemetery , Highway 129, Plot Number 69.'

Citibank : 'Sir, that's a cemetery !'

Family Member : 'And what do you do with dead people on your planet???

(Priceless!!)

SPECIAL POEM

A row of bottles on my shelf
Caused me to analyze myself.
One yellow pill I have to pop
Goes to my heart so it won't stop.
A little white one that I take
Goes to my hands so they won't shake.
The blue ones that I use a lot
Tell me I'm happy when I'm not.
The purple pill goes to my brain
And tells me that I have no pain.
The capsules tell me not to wheeze
Or cough or choke or even sneeze.
The red ones, smallest of them all
Go to my blood so I won't fall.
The orange ones, very big and bright
Prevent my leg cramps in the night.
Such an array of brilliant pills
Helping to cure all kinds of ills.
But what I'd really like to know...
Is what tells each one where to go!

There's always a lot to be thankful for,
if you take time to look for it.

For example, I am sitting here thinking
how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.

The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
(Psalm 27:1)

I’m a country boy. There used to be a big sticker that guys put on their trucks back in my home town that said “AIN’T SKEERED.” For whatever reason this little misspelled and false statement was on many of the four-wheel drives in our area. They were tough and proud and prideful, until something tragic happened, then their chest deflated and their little saying went to “SKEERED.”

God has a way of knocking the stuffing out of us at times to let us know that we are nothing apart from Him. As we live our lives we can have confidence that we have help, no matter the situation. The LORD is my strength, He lights our way and saves our lives. He is our salvation. For some of you going through those seasons when being afraid is a daily affair, may I remind you that the LORD can handle whatever it is that might be “SKEERING” you. Go ahead, trust Him. He can handle it!

Concentrate on this Sentence

"To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did." When God takes something from your grasp, He's not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better. Concentrate on this sentence... "The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you."

On the lighter side:

"Gas Service Men"

Two gas company servicemen, a senior training supervisor and a young trainee, were out checking meters in a suburban neighborhood.

They parked their truck the end of the alley and worked their way to the other end. At the last house, a woman looking out her kitchen window watched the two men as they checked her gas meter.

Finishing the meter check, the senior supervisor challenged his younger co-worker to a foot race down the alley back to the truck to prove that an older guy could outrun a younger one.

As they came running up to the truck, they realized the lady from that last house was huffing and puffing right behind them. They stopped and asked her what was wrong.

Gasping for breath, she replied, "When I saw two men from the gas company running as hard as you two were from my house, I figured I'd better run too!"

Lord, Prop us up.

Every time I am asked to pray, I think of the old deacon who always prayed, Lord, prop us up on our leanin' side.

After hearing him pray that prayer many times, someone asked him why he prayed that prayer so fervently.

He answered, 'Well sir, you see, it's like this...I got an old barn out back.

It's been there a long time, it's withstood a lot of weather, it's gone through a lot of storms, and it's stood for many years.

It's still standing. But one day I noticed it was leaning to one side a bit.

So I went and got some pine poles and propped it up on its leaning side so it wouldn't fall.

Then I got to thinking about that and how much I was like that old barn. I've been around a long time.

I've withstood a lot of life's storms. I've withstood a lot of bad weather in life, I've withstood a lot of hard times, and I'm still standing too. ?But I find myself leaning to one side from time to time, so I like to ask the Lord to prop us up on our leaning side, cause I figure a lot of us get to leaning, at times.

Sometime we get to leaning toward anger, leaning toward bitterness, leaning toward hatred, leaning toward cussing, leaning toward a lot of things that we shouldn't. So we need to pray, 'Lord, prop us up on our leaning side, so we will stand straight and tall again, to glorify the Lord.

Remember When:

Close your eyes...And go back...

....Before the Internet or PC or the MAC......

....Before semi-automatics and crack....

....Before Playstation, SEGA, Super Nintendo, even before Atari...

....Before cell phones, CD's, DVD's, voicemail and e-mail....

....way back........way.....way.....way back.....

I'm talkin' bout hide and seek at dusk

Red light, Green light

Red Rover....Red Rover.....

Playing kickball & dodgeball until the first...no...second...no...third Streetlight came on

Ring around the Rosie

London Bridge

Hot potato

Hop Scotch

Jump rope

Duck....duck....GOOSE!!!

YOU'RE IT!!

Parents stood on the front porch and yelled (or whistled) for you to
come home - no pagers or cell phones

Mother May I?

Hula Hoops

Seeing shapes in the clouds

Endless summer days and hot summer nights (no A/C) with the windows open

The sound of crickets

Running through the sprinkler

Cereal boxes with that GREAT prize in the bottom

Cracker jacks with the same thing

Ice pops with 2 sticks you could break and share with a friend

Fat Albert, Road Runner, Smurfs, Picture Pages, G-Force & He-Man,

Schoolhouse Rock

Watchin' Sunday morning oldies (Abbott & Costello, Three Stooges)

Wonder Woman & Super Man Underoos

FONZIE.....AYYYYYYYY

Playing Dukes of Hazard

Catchin' lightning bugs in a jar

Christmas morning

Your first day of school

Bedtime Prayers and Goodnight Kisses

Climbing trees

Swinging as high as you could to try and reach the sky

Getting an Ice Cream off the Good Humor Truck

A million mosquito bites and sticky fingers

Jumpin' down the steps

Jumpin' on the bed

Pillow fights

Sleep-overs

A 13" black and white TV in your room meant you were RICH

Runnin' till you were out of breath

Laughing so hard that your stomach hurt

Being tired from PLAYING

WORK: meant taking out the garbage or doing the dishes

Your first crush

Your first kiss (I mean the one that you kept your mouth CLOSED and your eyes OPEN

Rainy days at school meant playing "Heads up 7UP" or hangman" in the classroom, Remember that?

Oh, I'm not finished yet....

Kool-Aid was the drink of the summer

So was a swig from the hose

Giving your friends a ride on your handlebars

Wearing your new shoes on the first day of school

Class Field Trips with soggy sandwiches

When nearly everyone's mom was at home when the kids got there

When a quarter seemed like a fair allowance; and another quarter a MIRACLE

When ANY parent could discipline ANY kid, or feed him, or use him to carry groceries...And nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it.

When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited you at home.

Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn't because of drive by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc.

Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! And some of us are still afraid of em!

Didn't that feel good? Just to go back and say, "Yeah, I remember that!"

Well, let's keep going!!

Let's go back to the time when...

Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-mo"

Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "do over!"

"Race issues" meant arguing about who ran the fastes
