If you want to use it that long then you are better going with a ring sling. The pouch just isn't good for infant-toddler wear. When you have a toddler in one your stuck having them on your hip, VS putting them on your back, which you can do with a ring sling.

Ryanne, I did have some success with back-wearing with a pouch. It wasn't nearly as comfortable as the wrap, but it worked in a pinch. The pouch had to be pretty snug though.

Yeah, I have done it for like 5-10 minutes, but it doesn't feel secure enough to me, with a wiggly toddler, to do it for very long. And definitely not comfortable enough.

Christine, before my second baby was born I made a really basic pouch sling. I mean *really* basic. Once piece of fabric, one curved seam, that's it. Once I learned that it needed to be a little tighter than the pattern said, I adjusted it and it was perfect. My babies fit in it in all different positions, and even when they were bigger I could use it for a hip carry, or to hold them close to me when they were sleeping. I have tried to re-create that sling but not managed. Maybe it's perfection was just a fluke, but it's worn out now so I will have to come up with something different if God gives us another baby.

I also made a wrap (cut a jersey stretch sheet in half and sewed the ends together). It is rather awkward dealing with all that fabric and I always felt like I looked rather weird with a sheet wrapped around my torso. But it was extremely comfortable and very secure. And very versatile. It was definitely the best one I found for back carrying.

Let me clarify that I don't know if I plan on using a sling that long. We'll have to see how baby and I are together.

Maggie ... I've seen pictures of yours. What do you use? (I remember hearing about the one you made too.)

besides the pouch and wrap, I have some "frankenkozy's" which are kind of a mix between a mei-tai and a wrap. Those are pretty comfy too, especially with a newborn that doesn't move around a lot.

Has anyone worn their baby while pregnant, mainly in the last couple of months? I haven't worn Mary in a long time.

I haven't(not been pregnant twice, lol) but I think a back carry would be pretty comfortable. I know lots of women who wear all the way through their pregnancy and then will occasionally wear two kids at once.

Ryan is not too keen on the back carry, but I was also wondering about the hip carry as well. I guess I will just need to try it and see how it works.

I wore Isaac in my Moby wrap out in public for the first time. I have never ever seen anyone wearing their baby so I was kind of self conscious about it. Well that went away quickly, I got my first "smile" from the first person we met. And literally about 10 people in Walmart stopped me and said how "content" and "happy" he looked. And what a neat "carrier thingy" that I had! Isaac rode the whole time (about an hour) kicking his legs and grinning at everyone. Not one fuss, whine, or anything!

A woman at a church I attended used to carry her 3rd child while pregnant with #4.

I have worn Noah on my back with an Ergo. It was still comfy.

Has anyone used the Ergo with an infant before? Using the insert you can buy for it?

I haven't used the Ergo, but I have used the Beco which is quite similar and they can be used with an infant. I wore my nephew several times, but the Beco Butterfly has a built in insert.

So I've tried out my sling a couple times. I will need practice. But it worked great in church to keep her quiet and allowing me to not have to hold on to her so tightly to keep her still.

Beth has not been napping today (but she slept 12 hours straight last night), so Greg took her and Nathan out while I mowed the lawn. It's good exercise for me.

Anyways, Greg sent me a phone picture... he is wearing Beth and she conked right out against her daddy's chest. Love it!

Are you going to post the picture or leave us in suspense?

I've worn Isaiah recently.
Too big to wear him on my front, but I've done the back carry in my mei tie, and the hip carry for our hikes. Works just fine and is very comfortable. Actually easier for me then pushing the stroller.

I need to make myself a new wrap, I gave mine away because I love them so much LOL...sounds funny but I wanna share the awesomeness =P
Anyhoo. Once I make the wrap I'll be wearing him a lot more often.

I've tried wearing Mary on the hip hold with my Moby and I like it, but she is not a big fan. She is at that stage that she wants down and wants to run around.

You should get a woven one, Sandy. Much more supportive

hmmmm! I might just do that. I know I could ask for one as a birthday gift and get it...so maybe I'll pick out what I *Really really* want.

I've got the fabric and am fixing to make me a Moby Wrap. I have a Cammo one that Sarah made me, which I love, but in the store I get funny looks with it, I think I look somewhat like Rambo with the cammo criss crossed across my back! My Dad says Isaac looks like a paratrooper in the forward facing front carry.

PIC (Yeah I know to spread the straps out, I've since gotten the hang of it, everytime I post the pic I get told that...haha)

Nice Erin! I like it.

For mums at home alone with their kids, when is the youngest you wore your child on your back? Beth is close to 20lbs now, so she's a hefty girl. I'm ok with my Ergo having her in front for now, but I was just wondering.

For me, it isn't an age as much as the ability of the child. I still haven't worn Justice on my back, but that's just because I don't wear him as much as I did Jack...he doesn't like to be tied down in the wrap. Jack loved (and still loves) to be tightly wrapped up and carried. I started back carrying him when he was old enough to hold himself up well...which for him was over a year because he was a leaner. He would start out straight and eventually end up sideways if you didn't correct him in the wrap often.

Paul wears the kids on his back earlier then I do...he starts usually by 6mo.

I wore my nephew on my back at about 8 weeks old. The Beco has a built in infant harness and it's taller so it gives better head support. I would totally wear Beth on my back :)
