Yeah, Humble is now south of Houston! (well, part of houston, at least.)

The area around Humble and up and over to Spring and beyond used to be the country.

I remember when Intercontinental was built, and it was out in the middle of nowhere.

Same thing with D/FW. I remember when it was first built, and the little towns near it were podunk and hardly considered suburbs except for Irving.

Dallas, Texas for the last 20 years.

michelle,

I was born in Georgia and moved to Michigan when I was 3. I came to Texas in 1983.

Wow. No sooner did I post my Texas Roll Call comment than I got a PM from you. I tried to reply, but the forum message said your inbox was full. It kicked my message out.

I wanted to send you a PM. You can send me an email to graham75209@hotmail.com. I had an invitation for a computer telephone ministry you might be interested in.

For our honeymoon DH and I stayed in the Embassy Suites near DFW. I worked for an airline and so we got a discount since our flight crews stayed there. It was gorgeous! My father also used to pastor a church near there, so I visited Irving lots of times. I hated that turnoff right near Texas Stadium. The traffic was awful.

I've never been a fan of Irving. When I was a kid, Irving was kind of seedy. It wasnt until the airport and Las Colinas that it got classed up a little.

And the land that D/FW sits on is horrible. The Carpenters practically donated it for the airport to be built, and then they developed the dog out of all the areas aound it. LOL!! But the type of soil that is in Irving makes it one of the highest for foundation problems in the state of Texas. That's pretty bad. The airport was no exception and the runways routinely have to be maintained due to buckling. At least last time I knew anything about it that was the case. Maybe they've come up with some sort of road material that doesn't require as much repair, but that was a nightmare at the airport for years.

It still is in places. The Irving Mall on Beltline could use a shot in the arm business-wise.

I don't know anything about the runways but a friend of mine bought a 4 bedroom house with aluminum wiring for a pretty good price. She was very concerned about how well the house was painted and decorated but refused to let us help her get some copper wiring.

On top of that, it was a slab foundation and she blew it off as one of those things you have to put up with.

I have seen otherwise gorgeous houses in the Dallas area lose value because of foundation problems--as much as 50%.

The Dallas area has a horrible track record with foundations, and Irving leads the pack. Gotta keep adequate soil around the foundation and keep it moist. We always "watered" our foundation when I was growing up, so that it wouldn't dry out. The newer homes don't have as much of a problem, because many of them have tension rods. If they do crack, it keeps them from shifting.

BTW, your friend really ought to get the copper done. Some financing is not allowed unless a workaround with copper is done. Don't have to do all of the wiring -- just the outlets mostly. Sure as I say that, someone is going to get on here and go on and on about how that's just a scare.

Well, born in Tyler, Texas...moved to the Dallas area when I was 5. I've been there pretty much ever since with the exception my time in Lubbock for law school.

Love it here! I'm weird. I don't mind the heat. Personally, I have a hard time imagining living somewhere else.

BTW, I heard just a couple of weeks ago that part of the problem with DFW's road moving was due to the fact the contractor didn't put them in properly. Something about laying it over dirt that is prone to moving and shifting when it rains.

Landabee,

Do you get to go back to San Antonio very much? I sure would love to visit SA. I haven't been there in almost 10 years. But I'm going back home to Dallas this summer, so I may have to make a trip.

Wendy,

I love Dallas too. It will always be my hometown. I think love it there, because I understand the mentality more than any other place, and contrary to what some people think, there are some beautiful places there.

Born on the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida of Texas parents, moved back and forth between the East and West Coasts until Daddy retired in ‘65 when we settled in the Aldine area just North of Houston. I have lived in the Houston area ever since. Our son and daughter have lived all their lives in Texas. One of the things our daughter is taking with her overseas next month is a door size Texas flag to hang on her wall, she has discovered that frequently people overseas that are anti-American are VERY pro-Texan.

My mom sent this to me the other day:

A TEXAS BLESSING

Note: If you are not a resident of TEXAS or never
have lived in the hot, humid Southwest, you may not understand the weight of this blessing!

Bless this house, oh Lord, we cry.
Please keep it cool in mid-July.

Bless the walls where termites dine,
While ants and roaches march in time.

Bless our yard where spiders pass
Fire ant castles in the grass.

Bless the garage, a home to please
Carpenter beetles, ticks and fleas.

Bless the love bugs, two by two,
the gnats and mosquitoes that feed on you.

Millions of creatures that fly or crawl,
in TEXAS, Lord, you've put them all!!

But this is home, and here we'll stay,
So thank you Lord, for insect spray.

HOLD IT.............there's more....................

YOU KNOW YOU ARE IN TEXAS IN JULY
WHEN. . . .

The birds have to use potholders to pull worms out
of the ground.

The trees are whistling for the dogs.

The best parking place is determined by shade
instead of distance.

Hot water now comes out of both taps.

You can make sun tea instantly.

You learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty
good branding iron!

The temperature drops below 95 and you feel a
little chilly.

You discover that in July it only takes 2 fingers
to steer your car.

You discover that you can get sunburned through
your car window.

You actually burn your hand opening the car door.

You break into a sweat the instant you step outside
at 7:30 a.m.

Your biggest bicycle wreck fear is, "What if I get
knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and
cook to death?"

You realize that asphalt has a liquid state.

The potatoes cook underground, so all you have to
do is pull one out and add butter, salt and pepper.

Farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to
keep them from laying boiled eggs.

The cows are giving evaporated milk. Ah, what a
place to call home.

God Bless Our State of TEXAS

I usually make it home to visit at least once a year (Christmas). Sometimes I can manage twice in one year.
