In regards to top 10 scares, this is my current, tentative list of the best: in no particular order... Audition--the phone sequence The Shining--the elevator lobby flooded with blood George A. Romero's zombie trilogy--pretty much everything, especially during the gory climaxes... I guess that explains why I had nightmares of the cannibalistic, living dead ever since! Alien--John Hurt's most infamous chest burster scene, though the xenomorphical creature is a scary moment itself! R-Point--the opening sequence involving the blood-curdling SOS transmissions, and later on with the "gray soldiers scene."* *hint: ghost troopers?

Well, I went to see THE MIST today and it was pretty good. I really like the end-of-the-world apocalyptic movies and the creatures in the mist were pretty scary (not really gross or too alien looking, the creatures brought to mind dinosaurs, as if the director got the ideas for the creatures from dinosaurs), but terrifying in the fact of "what if that happened in real life what would I do in that situation?" and terrifying in what they did to the people caught in the mist. For a brief summary. A storm occurs in this small Maine town over night, very violent and "weird" storm. The next morning, a "mist" is seen forming across the lake near the mountains where an Army research installation is located (uh oh, can you already suspect who is responsible for the mist?). It centers around a man and his son. They go to town to get supplies (the house was damaged in the storm), while driving to town they past a convoy of military vehicles driving like a bat out of hell (hmm..another hint about the origins of the mist!), and while at the supermarket, emergency sirens start wailing throughout town and a bleeding man is seen running ahead of the mist and stumbles into the store screaming about "things in the mist". People are stuck in the store and decide to listen to this bleeding man and keep the doors shut and....well, I will stop there and let you watch the movie to see for yourself what happens. Anyways, everything was good except for a few parts. There was one character in particular that got on my nerves in the movie (the insane "preacher" woman, ugh, she is pretty much that stereotype of the "unhinged Christian" that I hate!!!). I liked how the movie portrayed what happens to people in a group situation during a disaster: Things all go to hell and most people become sheep willing to follow whoever steps up to plate (and you better hope it's a good person that does too!). The ending really sucked too and I didn't like it. It was horrible and I could see something like that happening (I had a suspicion). I wonder if that's how the book ended too, guess I"ll have to read the short story now to see how it compares to the book! Overall, THE MIST was a decent apocalyptic sci-fi horror movie. Had some gore and blood. Some err..cursing (you know, taking the Lord's name in vain) a few times. A person is shot by another person. This is an R rated movie. I wish we could have learned more about what caused the mist, or maybe some scenes of it happening, you only get a description from second-hand account of someone who knew about what was going on that caused the mist.

I didn't know until I checked the movie listing online to see what movies were out and viola, there it was! LOL I thought it was a good movie, I got some decent jumps, little screams and gasps. There are parts in the movie where you want to strangle certain characters, you'll know what I'm talking about when you see it. And of course, the ending was a disappointment to me. But I think the rest of the movie more than made up for a dismal ending. Since you have read the story, could you explain what the book ending was?

David and a couple of others try to escape the mist in David's truck. They are unsuccesful. The story ends as a colection of pages left by David on a table at a Howard Johnson's motel whre they had stopped. We are never told if they are alive or dead....

Saw THE MIST last night, and while the ending was totally differnt from the book, I still thought it was pretty good. It's not often that directors have the guts to end on such a down beat. I really liked this movie! It was mostly faithful to the story, yet it amplified certain elements that the book only hinted at, such as the Arrowhead Project being responsible for the mist, anda discarded otehrs (the book has a sex scene between David and Amanda that was just totally out of place). I'm no fan of CGI effects, but they were well done here. I guess the fact that the creatures were partially oibscured by the mist helped cover some of the "fakeness" inherent with CGI. My only problem was that my moviegoing experience was totally ruined by the two ladies sitting behind me and another group of three teenaged boys a few seats over, all of whom apparently thought this was a comedy, judging by their incessant laughter. They also found it acceptable to talk to each other in normal tones of voice throughout the picture. Why on earth do some people insist on ruining things for everybody else?

I also agree the CGI was utilized well in this movie. The monsters that terrified me the most were those jumping spiders....ack! I think the best scene of the movie was the pharmacy scene, which is weird since I hate spiders!! I would have said something to those people or even got up and found a manager or other employee to get them in there to shut them up!

Several of us did complain to management, and they sent somebody in who spoke to the teenage boys (and they were quiet the rest of the show), but they didn't spek to the ladies, who continued to talk at the screen and giggle out loud for the rest of the movie. It just amazes me how some people apparently think the rest of us want to hear them. One other difference between the story and the movie.....in the movie, David finds his wife wrapped up in the spiderwebs. In the story he is unable to get down to his house at all, so he never finds out if she's alive or dead. I'm wondering if these changes were Stephen King's doing. He has said that he never liked the idea of David sleeping with Amanda but never finding out what happened to his wife. My guess is that he got his wish with the movie. I'd probably say this was one of the best, if not THE best, adaptations of a King work to date. I still want to smack King around a little bit for what he did to his excellent short story "Trucks" which transmuted into the abortion known as 1986's MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE.....

A movie I really want to see is I Am Legend!! It looks good, I love those apocalyptic theme movies. I may read the short story the movie is based off of first.

I'm looking forward to "I Am Legend." I love the book but didn't really like "the Omega Man" and "The Last Man on Earth" both of which were adaptations of the book. Could be really cool.

ORIGINAL: loveydoveysmom Have never heard of this movie "I Am Legend". Do tell...... My 15 year old is bugging me to go see The Mist this weekend. YES I want to see it but right at this very moment I'm too exhausted to see anything. This is a first for me....sigh! It is based on a short story. It's about a person that is the last man on earth. A virus/plague sweeps the world and everyone either dies or becomes some sort of vampire/blood drinker. Will Smith plays this man living alone in NYC, he's a scientist and he is immune to this virus and he tries to find a cure. I've never read the book, so I can't say how the movie synopsis I've read compares to the book, but the previews of this movie look good. I will probably read the book first though. It comes out December 14th! Oh, and I'd recommend going to see THE MIST. I thought it was a pretty good movie. Not really "horror", sci-fi/end-of-the-world scenario horror I suppose.

I AM LEGEND was also filmed as THE OMEGA MAN starring Charlton Heston sometime in the late 60's or early 70's......

this isn't 10, because I don't see scary movies that often, but the Sixth Sense frightened me, when his tent comes apart and the dead girl is in his tent. It, by Stephen King, with Tim Curry playing the maniacal clown. I hate clowns to start with, this made it worse. The scene is the Shining with the twin girls in the vestibule when the little kid is riding his tricycle. and I don't remember the name of it, but it was this French film I saw when I was little. These two girls camper/VW bus, breaks down in the forest and the cop who is supposedly supposed to help them, end sup terrorizing them and chasing them and i remember one of the girls hiding in the closet when you see his shadow passing by. I guess because I was little at the time, it made an impression.

I enjoyed the movie as well. The holy roller woman was annoying though. People actually clapped when she met her fate. I read the short story of The Mist years ago, how did it end? I forget. This ending was very dark and yet very effective.

One of my top ten scares would have to be from John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) - the scene where MacReady (Kurt Russell) is checking the petri dishes of blood to see who is and who isn't human. I actually jumped when one of the dishes tested positive (I won't say what happened in case there are those who have not seen this movie).

I saw Skinwalkers last night. Really bad werewolf movie, no wonder it bombed at the box office after being shelved for years.

ORIGINAL: elastic i'm glad you said that...i was on the fence about renting skinwalkers..the reviews were so bad...so now i won't bother. thanks for posting about it. I took a chance on it due to Stan Winston's makeup effects. Even those were not that great. There was no really cool transformation like in American Werewolf in London or Howling. Bad acting, story and idea all around.

Has anyone seen One Missed Call? I saw the previews and for some reason I want to see it. It doesn't look overly scary, probably won't even be that good either, but I still want to see it.LOL.

A blast from the past...this week I found the newly released DVD for the 1981 slasher film THE BURNING. Now before you dismiss it, let me say that even in the drek that was the slasher film craze, it was possible to find genuinely scary movies. THE BURNING came out the same year and had the exact plot line as FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2, but it was a million times better executed. Jsaon Alexander (Seinfeld) is in it, and showcases his obvious comedic talent, and Holly Hunter apears in a smaller, non-speaking role. Sure the movie does play by every slasher film rule, but it is very well done, moodily photographed, and excellently scored by Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman. If you haven't seen THE BURNING, check it out. It's a diamond in the horror film rough.....

I believe the same guy who directed this French homage to 70's slasher films (Alexander Aja) went on to direct one of the Hills Have Eyes remakes/sequel. And yes, the two girls in The Shining are creepy as creepy gets! Thanks (Stanley) Kubrick!
