I was recently at the hospital to see my BIL who was in for a minor procedure. I went to the men's room on the ground floor when I first arrived. After washing my hands, I opened the foot-operated trash can to drop in the paper towel. There, resting on a mound of towels near the top, was an empty package of my old poison of choice for 30 years.

My only sensation was a sadness for the unknown man still controlled by that brand of legalized dope like I used to be.

It no longer bothers me to go through the tobacco lane at the Super WalMart. Seeing all those tobacco products has about the same effect now as seeing roadkill along the highway.

This loss of desire for or interest in tobacco didn't happen overnight. There was a long period on my journey to freedom where I avoided going into convenience stores and using WalMart's tobacco checkout lane. But riding out those rough spots has been more than worthwhile!

It is GRAND not having to factor in fixes of nicotine when planning my day, a trip, or a social or business event. I no longer do a mental inventory to and from work to make sure I'll have enough to make until the next time I'm on the road.

All you have to do is take it one crave, one hour, one day at a time to freedom!

Day 660 nicotine-FREE, Day 757 tobacco-FREE!

One question: Do you NEVER get craves anymore?

I haven't had any craves in a very long time, at least since my 1 year mark. The one thing that impressed this on me was when I did my taxes this year without any hint of a crave, despite having to pay in the most ever for me (over $1,500). I used to stress big time during taxes, even when I paid nothing in, which was the norm for me.

The biggest danger for now is if I were ever to make the stupid mistake of thinking that I could have "just one" safely. That seems to be one of the biggest causes for caving after a year.

That is what I'm enjoying the most I think, Jimbo. I don't even have to think about any of that anymore. Thanks for your encouraging post Jimbo.

Sarah, thanks for asking. These 14mg patches suck. LOL! Not nearly as good as the 21mg. The firt couple of days seemed OK, but I got all this stressful stuff going on right now. So, I don't think I'll be stepping down to 7mg tomorrow. I'll go for another week of 14mg I think. But still smoke free since April 10.

Off on holiday to a beautiful place with abounding triggers. Incommunicado for a week. Still quit, and every intention to remain so.

Hang in there folks!

I have just completed 24 hours without a cigarette!!! The first time in 27 years. I tried without nothing, but had to take a patch, I had my poor hubby in tears. I was beyond my normal grouchy! The patch is helping.

Thank you Lord, I did'nt think I could go even 24 hrs. Last time I smoked with 2 patches on.

1 day

I actually don't remember the last time I had a crave and I actually just passed my one-year mark last month.

Christina, have you called the Health Department in your area to see if they have a smoking cessation class? Here in Colorado the health departments offer the classes and patches for free.

Ryanne, we do have one, but it's sorta far, and we can't really afford the gas. I'm doing OK though...still smoke free for over a month....just not nicotine free.

Oh, I didn't think you needed the classes but the free patches would be nice.

Oh yeah, free patches would be nice for sure! Walgreens doesn't have them on sale anymore, so they are 40 bucks for 2 weeks! Ouch!

How much $$ did you spend on cigarettes in two weeks?

Denim,

Do most people gain weight after quittting? Man, I cannot stay away from fridge.

What can I buy, candy, sunflower seeds? What?

Weight gain is almost a universal side effect as your body learns to function normally again. But you'd have to gain about 75 pounds to cause as much harm as continued smoking will do to you. Getting active can minimize weight gain but you biggest priority is to get free of the nicotine!

I may have posted this before, but if it will help, I'll do it again:

For the next week or so, worry less about new habits than coping as your body reprograms itself to life without addiction to nicotine. This is a partial list of things that might help:

Put a rubber band around your wrist - snap it whenever a crave hits, repeatedly if needed until it passes. Limit caffeine to HALF your usual amount (nicotine reduced its effects) - caffeine can make you think you're having an intense craving when it's just its effects doubled. (You can resume caffeine intake over time.) Eat regularly - skipping meals like we used to will result in low blood sugar which will also make you think you're having an intense craving when all you need is food (low carb will minimize weight gain and give you a steady, longer period energy).

Munch sunflower seeds, peanuts, beef jerky, sugar free gum (Xylitol like found in Trident gums can actually reduce & REPAIR minor cavities), Altoids mints & gum, toothpicks, coffee stir sticks, or even one third to half a cotton ball (rinse your mouth with Listerine after putting the cotton ball in your mouth for extra strong craves).

Hopefully, these might give you a few ideas for coping.

As mentioned, going for long walks or working out can also be a great stress reducer - as well as minimizing weight gain. Don't work too much about weight gain for a while. Your first priority now is to establish a solid record of successes in your journey toward FREEDOM!

How much $$ did you spend on cigarettes in two weeks?

I spent $33.60 on cigarettes in two weeks. My smokes were $3.20 a pack, and I smoked 15 a day. Patches cost the same everywhere, but cigarettes vary by state. We don't pay sales tax up here, so $3.20 is $3.20 and $40 is $40. I know in CA Camels are about $4 plus tax, so patches would be cheaper down there.

I hope Walgreens puts them on sale again, but one thing I did notice is the 7mg patches are cheaper than the 14 and 21...I forget by how much though, so I'm looking forward to that Friday.

I know I've been on these patches longer than recommended, but I really don't feel very strong. I had to go a whole morning and part of the afternoon without one on one day, and I almost went to the little store and bought a single cigarette. Either way I'm getting nicotine, but at least with the patches I'm not putting other bad substances into my body.

Well I did really good not smoking after getting home from the hospital yesterday. However this morning I found that I had smoked without even thinking about it today. I just lit up because they were available. They aren't my cigs to throw away, so I had my dd hide them from me.

I understand that problem on a couple of levels. For several years I intended to quit nearly every Monday morning but I'd have my first of the day before thinking about it and, then, I'd put it off another week.

But I once quit a year while aboard a ship where about 50% or more of the crew smoked. (That cave was really stupid and resulted in 30 years feeding my addiction.)

Bumming smokes from close family is probably different than bumming from friends because friends will eventually quit lettting you sponge off them and tell you to get your own.

Also, it was family that took me to ER yesterday and my sister sitting right there with me as the dr. told me to quit.
Sis has decided that she is going to quit too.

If you smoke after all this time, I will bribe the mods to tell me where you live, I will drive (or fly) there and I will kick your butt.
