boil it before you use it? Really??? I don't think the diva said that.

I got mine at the tail end of my period, and used it on my last day of spotting. It was good practice. It was probably 6 months before I really had it down for my first heavy days, but now that I have it figured out, I LOVE IT and wouldn't go back.

Yep, it says in the instruction booklet to clean the mooncup either by boiling or using a sterilizing solution before you first use it. BTW, would boiling after every period make the cup softer over time? Just a thought I had.

First test last night. I studied the instructions and the links you gals have posted here and everything worked like a song!!! The only minor *ow* moment was when the cup plopped open before it was all the way through the 'bottleneck' bit. It came back out really easily and painlessly, so much for my concerns. I had to check things in a mirror to believe the cup was actually inside, it was so much easier than I'd thought.

*pops champagne cork* You're all invited!

OK - I've got more questions!

Is there anybody else who does not trim the stem? I can use the mooncup comfortably with the full length stem. I don't think I've inserted the cup too far. When I tug the stem I can't feel a give. It feels as if I was pulling it right out. Or am I missing something?

I'm not sure how to know if the cup has opened fully once it's right in. I tried to rotate it by the stem but it seems to sit tight. I can't go any further in with two fingers *cough*. There never seems to be any suction either. Any tips?

My TOM should be here at any moment. Once I can use the mooncup for real I might ask more questions .

I'll echo ezri's refrain that we're all built differently but...

I have never trimmed the stem on my Diva cup, and it doesn't bother me. My theory is if it works as is, don't trim it.
Can you feel around the bottom above the stem? If it feels all rounded out it probably opened all the way. If it feels caved in on one side, then it probably didn't.
Can you reach up a bit past the stem and rotate it? I'm not sure I could rotate mine using the stem. Then again, some ladies here never rotate theirs and apparently get a fine suction.
The other things I've found that help with getting a suction- make sure the little holes in the top edge (assuming the mooncup has them) are cleared out. I've also found it helps to put a little water around the top rim of the cup. It seems to seal better wet than dry.

I never cut my stem. It bothered me a little for a few cycles, but then I got used to it, or maybe it got softer from wear. Like Stacy said, if it doesn't feel caved in it should be completely open. I don't move mine around once it's in unless I think it's not completely open.

I need some virtual cookies and hugs *puppy dog eyes*.

After three or four times in and out without any problems my body decided it likes the cup so much that it wouldn't let it go. I got my fingers into a cramp to try and get it out. One finger goes in fine but not two. After much bearing down the cup slowly worked its way out and just when I thought everything was hunky-dory: OWWW! I hurt myself, there was a bit of blood on the outside of the cup . Need some more practice, I suppose... at the moment I feel a bit weepy. I'm not planning to go back to tampons, though.

this is just a menstrual cup joy rave.

i took my cup with me to Jamaica for a month and had two cycles (lucky me right?) But it worked so amazingly beautifully I could sing! It was so hot and sweaty I think I would've just died on the spot if I'd had to wear pads through the whole thing. It was hard to start out on but four cycles in, I've made the switch and i am never ever ever going back!

hang in there girl! We mentioned those little holes- check them... if they are blocked two things can happen. #1 it wont seal and you leak. OR #2 It'll seal and pull a suction that'll make you feel like you are pulling your eyeballs out through your vagina.

To clean the holes try forcing water through them. one of the sites says to put water in the cup then cover the open end with your hand and squeeze the water out the holes. I fill a small container with water and push the cup against the bottom until I see bubbles out each hole.

Thanks *munch munch mmmyummm*

I've worked out what's wrong. I was too stupid to fold the cup before pulling it all the way out, that was the BIG pain. I must say, the instruction booklet wasn't too helpful at that point. I can cope with the suction, even pulling with determination and vigour doesn't really hurt. In the meantime I've refined my method anyway: with plenty of bearing down only one finger needs to go in to work the cup out. I've never yet managed to rotate it once it's in but had only one minor leak so apparently it opens just fine almost every time.

I did the water squirt method for cleaning the holes and got myself wet . For the last trickle of my period I went back to tampons because I was suffering from cup and finger burn from all the poking and prodding and catching the skin with my fingernails in my sensitive parts . But it'll definitely be the cup for me from now on.

As long as when you stick a finger up to "fold" the cup to bring it out, you don't allow the fluid to get all over the place. I hate when that happens!

Anoc - you could also try inserting the cup "shallow-ly", giving it a turn to create the seal and then pushing it up a bit more. Or, pushing it up like normal, bearing down until you can grab the bottom and then rotating it. I do both of those and it seems to work fine. The only time my cup floweth over is if I've left it too long without dumping =)

*munches a cookie* thanks, Ezri!

And Anoc? I promise it'll get easier =)

Good idea, will try that.

Oh yes, after the first night of my period that cup was very full. It didn't overflow but after I squeezed it to get it out my hand dripped red and I looked like the Nekid Axe Murderer. Actually I think menstrual blood on different days of a period makes quite fascinating viewing .

You're telling me - within five days I went from "scared of own vagina" to "pushing an enormous looking thing in and whipping it out several times a day" . Since I started off suspecting that this was simply not going to work it has really been a lot easier overall than I thought. Thanks for all you encouragement and tips and cookies *hugs*.

I just ordered the smaller of the two Lunettes for my 17yo today. As I said the girls knew about my cup but one day last month 17yo asked if I had any peroxide for a canker sore in her mouth I knew I had some on the top shelf behind my cup because I do that 50% peroxide 5-% water soak every other month to clean the staining So I told her where it was. I knew She'd have to move the container the cup was in to get to it. The next grocery trip she said that they needed more Pads and then asked me about the cup. I gave her a run down- as I said before they know about tampons... Well 17yo said she'd like to give it a go. SO we are going!

Well, thanks to you lovely ladies, I have gone from "Why would anyone want to do that" to "That is a really odd idea" to "That is an intriguing idea" to "Hmm, maybe I want to try one" to "I bought one today."

Yup, I finally decided to buy one. I found a local store that sells them, so I went and bought one. I tried it out in the shower today. The first time going in wasn't too bad, maybe a little awkward or uncomfortable, but it didn't really hurt. It did hurt some coming back out though! I read some more online and tried again and this time coming out wasn't too bad either. Now I'm curious to try it out for real and see if I have it positioned right and everything. I should have the opportunity in the next couple of days... I'll see how it goes. But I really like the idea of not having to run to the bathroom every couple of hours!

yup, I'm in the USA and I have no idea if the local store is a chain or not, I'm guessing no. I went to the diva website and they have a place where you can put in your city/state or zip code and it will show you any local stores that sell them. There were two in my city, and a couple more further away.

Well, my peditrician's take on the cup is he loves them. Abbey still has a few years before we have to deal with all of this. I asked him what he thought of the cups. . .and whether Abbey would be able to use one as a virgin. He said he recently had an 11 year who began her cycle, and she uses instead with no problems while she waits for a Luna to come in.

Tell 'em. You'll probably get the whole, "Make sure it's sanitary and always wash your hands" lecture. DUH What do these guys think is more sanitary? Tampons with their lovely, moist cotton fibers that are breeding grounds for bacteria? Gynocologists need to be educated. When I go on Monday, since I have a new one, I plan on taking the directions and info sheet from my box of Instead and one of the cups themselves to him.

I am built really small. . .every gyno I've ever seen is amazed I've had two kids. LOL I guess that's a good thing, but it can become rather embarassing. Anyway, my point is that I have ALWAYS had to use the itty bitty super slim for teeny bopper size tampons. I was worried about the Instead, but since it folds and all, it works PERFECTLY!!!!!

Whatever woman came up with the whole "cup" design needs a Nobel.

I finally started my period again after having these last two kids...didn't have one between them...came with my first set of two kids. Anyway...it's been three and a half years...and I knew this day was coming...but I wasn't prepared for it yet. I was going to buy a cup next month just in case it was soon. Oh well. I had to fall back on my enormous pads from right after I had the baby...and I sooooooooooo hate them. I can't wait til I can either get a cup or at least get some tampons!!!! I hate feeling icky!!!!
