ORIGINAL: lilyofthefield I'm really struggling with this lately. DH is an MD and wants it done - he feels our son wouldn't want to look "different" from his dad, and that he might feel weird in locker room situations (even though fewer and fewer babies are circumcised these days). I have never understood this reasoning. My father certainly never stood with my brother and compared willies, and my husband has never done so with my son (and my son is 18). When might they be naked together anyway, and even if it was in a locker room, would they really be standing around comparing willies? Wouldn't they just be showering, keeping themselves to themselves, and getting changed? I don't think it is a man thing at all - I think it's about the rights of the child. I read somewhere that originally in America the Puritans encouraged circumcision to deter the child from masturbating in later life, because it reduced sensitivity in that area, and that that is why it became so widespread in America (while not being widespread elsewhere except in Israel/Jewish communities).

I mentioned that it might affect our baby as far as sensation to DH as well. He thinks that is a good thing. I don't understand his reasons either, but then I'm not a man. He's adamant about it, so I don't really know what I can do.

My DH feels strongly about it too. He has been very supportive of all of my "crunchy" ideas (including home birth and cloth diapering) but he will not back down on this issue. He also thinks the decreased sensation is a good thing, and he gave a reason that I'm not going to post here.

Yep. Same here. I don't think he is going to back down, so I am trying to find a way to be okay with it. I would certainly insist on local analgesia and meeting the doctor who does it beforehand (after getting the nurses' recommendations).

I'd be interested to know the reason, if either of you would like to pm me (I'm married to an uncirc'd man, as are most Brit men, and have an uncirc'd 18yo son).

Trouble is, local anaesthesia makes the wound likely to bleed more.

Well, I don't really believe his reasoning (as far as sensitivity) is right, but he won't change his mind no matter what anyone says.

LOL - I had to look up bolshy! I think it is mostly that I can tell when he is putting his foot down about something. If I tried to argue about it, it wouldn't go anywhere but downhill.

ORIGINAL: 3cappuccinosmom I don't believe it's torture, and it's going to be done, I think he is totally right to have it done while they're babies and will forget about it (he was circed as a teen...not fun!). Thanks Maggie. That is what I am needing to hear since it doesn't seem it will be negotiable in our house either. May I ask why he decided to be circ'd when he was a teen?

I have to say that we are struggling with circing or not. I saw a video of a circumcision and was appalled. When hubby saw it, he too was very shaken. We had no idea. We are basically of the thought on the biblical side. I have told him what I thought, I do not want our boys circ'ed. But if he makes a final decision and wants them circ'ed I will follow him in this. He is still trying to make up his mind right now. I am trying not to sway him in either way. He realizes that with the different pregnancy, this might very well be a boy, so we are preparing ourselves.

my hubby was the only one out of his 3 brothers and his dad not to be circ'd and he said he had no problem growing up having one that was different. He liked it because his was always a little bigger He now likes to tease his brothers that he is the one who is getting more satisfaction then them. So hubby was dead against circ'ing.

The only way to determine that is to poll men who have been circumcised after becoming sexually active. So you only have small group of people to survey and then how do you account for differences due to age, multiple partners, just normal variations in intimacy etc. Not to mention the fact that it is subjective and inherently hard to quantify. So IMO at least it is not a particularly good reason/concern for not circumcising. Hope that makes sense, I am not sure I can say much more without violating TOS. Kris

ORIGINAL: Flintejae Is it REALLY true that men who are Not circ' have more sensation? I'd say it is highly likely. If the tip is not protected, its top layer of tissue, the epithelium, becomes dried-out and cornified, and since one of its major functions is sensation detection, many conclude that it becomes desensitised and sensation is decreased.

"skin" can't feel on it's own anyway...it's nerves that feel. As someone with nerve damage I can say that having less nerves doesn't affect the feeling in the ones I do have. (In my case it affects the muscle movement, but in the case of a penis I don't think that would be the case)
