I'm with you. I haven't been canning in the quantities you have but the stuff just keeps coming. I kept thinking I was done with broccoli and then there'd be more I couldn't ignore. Finally cured that though, we tilled the garden under! But even when I was getting ready to till and was chopping off the broccoli plants there was STILL broccoli spears I couldn't ignore. lol There will still be some apples when we get back from our trip and the grapes I plan to pick up on our way home. THEN I'll be done.

I hope to get some grapes from Hubby's great-aunt's house. If I do, I'll be making jelly! I still have some figs frozen...gotta can those. I also need to can the blackberries in the freezer. *sigh* I need a bigger canner and the "right" tools! Thankfully I'm going shopping out of town next month so maybe I can find what I need.

nailmom,

I was just wondering...what do you use pear relish on?

Thanks!

You use pear relish on whatever you want. What would you use pickle relish on? It's the same concept.

I still haven't finished making grape jelly. I have juice in the fridge and the family has been drinking it. I have one gallon that's off limits to drinking.

Just thought I'd give this thread a bump since it's almost summer time and we'll be bringing in fresh veggies and fruits...and hopefully doing some canning!

I got 18 half-pint jars (the somewhat decorative looking ones) off of Freecycle recently. They'd be great for jam, except neither Kevin nor I like jam! So... what would someone can in decorative half-pints?

Or I could re-Freecycle them... and the next person WILL be thankful that I ran them through the dishwasher!

Tricia, do you like to make salsa? What about fruit syrup?

How could you NOT like jam?!

LOL! We just don't. I've got some raspberry jam that someone in our small group gave us last fall; it hasn't been opened. I'll probably give it to my parents the next time I see them.

I've never made salsa, but if I did, I'd probably use pints or quarts for it.

Fruit syrup? Never heard of it.

Ya know, these will probably be sitting in my basement forever. I might as well Freecycle them so someone else can get use out of them.

Fruit syrup for ice cream, pound cake, pancakes, french toast, waffles, etc. Basically similar to making jelly only not using something like SureJel and probably less sugar. Anyway, if you don't know what it is, you're likely not interested.

Tricia, I knew we should have lived closer to each other. I could certainly help you out with those jars and the raspberry jam.

Yeah, probably better give the jars to someone who will use them. I'm always hunting jars at garage sales and such.

Ahhhh. OK, fruit syrup makes sense now. Yeah, we wouldn't use enough to make it worthwhile. (I would probably be interested, but wouldn't bother making it for just one person.)

Come to think of it, my mom usually gives out some of her jam to my niece's school teachers, etc., and doesn't always get the jars back. Maybe I'll just save 'em for her.

But this is off topic, sorta.

The small, decorative type jars are good to use when you are making something to give as gifts.

A small jar of homemade jelly/jam, etc, with a packet of biscuit mix and a bisquit cutter in a cute basket makes a nice kitchen shower gift, for instance.

Or make jam/jelly, salsa, whatever, and use for Christmas gifts for those acquaintances that you may want to give a small gift to, but don't want to spend a lot of money on.

Jam/jelly/honey with a loaf of homemade bread makes a nice small gift, too.

Please do save them for me!
Hi, I needed a little company so I snooped around a bit. Couldn't resist sticking my two jars in.
oops, now it's really off topic. Sorry!

That's okay, we needed to bump this thread anyway.

I made plum jelly for the first time! It was also my first time to make jelly without using a boxed jell product and only using sugar and time to cook. It was delicious and the ones I've given some to also have commented on how good it is. It's tart and I like it that way. Hubby is thoroughly enjoying it too. My co-worker who gave me the plums for the jelly said she'll bring me more! YAY!!!

I've never made jelly per se. (or however you spell it) I can't bear to dump all that good pulp. But I do make jam with red plums and, yes, it is a bit tart. I don't give that one away because I'm afraid it's a little too tart for most people. But I LOVE it stirred up in my oatmeal. I've also made a cake with it that friend hubby loves. It's a cake mix base with a layer of cream cheese then the jam then part of the cake mix mixture with chopped nuts. Hmmm, I should make that for him again soon....

BTW We're going to see Tricia & Kevin We're going to see Tricia & Kevin

Joyful, honestly, after looking at the pulp all cooked up, I got a bit grossed out. I like certain jams but mostly jellies. I only gave this jelly to a few people that I thought would want to at least taste it (the lady who gave me the plums, my mom--who is like me and likes tart things, and Austin's grandmother--whom I called a couple of times in the process to make sure I was doing it right). Even though they all really liked it, I probably won't give anymore out to other people because of the tartness factor. Funny you should mention oatmeal, Austin stirred some plum jelly into his oatmeal on Monday. That cake sounds interesting! Hope you have a wonderful trip and visit!!!

I know...I'm the one who killed the thread last time and here I am trying revive it. Just thought it needed a bump. I came in here to get some recipes (namely Grateful's syrup and method for canning pears). Thought there might be some folks out there who needed some too, with making canning plans for summer.

I miss canning!

All my stuff for it is still in Indiana. We also don't have a garden, so I don't know how cheap it would be.
