I'm a busy mother, wife, youth leader, sister, daughter, employee... I recently started back to work full time. I know that I need to start an exercise program/routine of some sort to help me stay in shape and to de-stress. My life is incredibly "busy" and I just haven't been able to find a groove and make a place for exercise. How do you other busy mom's, wives, etc make this happen in your life?

Hi Redsgrl I had the same problem not to mention I just plain ole didn't like exercising. My family (mom, aunts, etc) have genetic weight problems and I saw myself heading down the same path. What did I do? I began by parking the car away from work and walking. I also began walking on my lunch break vs. sitting at the lunch table with coworkers and stuffing myself. I started packing healthier lunches (most of the time)lol. I found a 5 minute arm exercise on youtube, saved it to my computer and while I'm watching television I will do the arm exercise via my computer. These things were a good start for me. I'm a busy mother, wife, youth leader, sister, daughter, employee... Try to find some time for YOU. If you're going to be there for everyone you have to take care of yourself first Be Blessed

I'm a stay at home, home schooling mom of four boys (15, 13, 11, and 10yo). I start my day by working out. That way, it's DONE and I don't have to worry about "fitting it in" later in the day.

You really just about have to do it first thing, I agree. I guess some people can do it in the evening but too many things can get in the way. I did start working out as a SAHM. I've worked off and on since and managed to make it in the evenings but hated it. I don't know how old your kids are but we started going to the gym when ds was 15 months old. So many of my friends say "oh, my kids don't like the kid room" - well, find a better gym for starters. But mine have just never realized it's an option not to go. You have to make it, whatever it is you choose to do, something you enjoy and grow to need. I also hated working out when I first started going. My gym became a support system and a social outlet for me and the kids. They're bummed about school starting because they'll miss their gym friends! It's easier now because it is my job. I teach group exercise classes and I'm working on becoming a trainer. But stepping up my class time is reminding me what it was like when I first started because it's really hard sometimes to get in there for my own workouts. I'm exhausted from classes, have so much other stuff I need to get done and it seems silly some days to be going to one gym in the morning and another in the evening. And I still hate the evenings. I guess I'm the poster child for making it a priority - now it's my job (and a borderline obsession). But the busier you are the more important it is to take care of yourself. You wont be able to keep up if you're not healthy.

I agree with all the suggestions above. You have to view exercize as a necessity. If you view it as something that's important, but can be dropped if all else goes crazy, it will be dropped often. Re-think what you are doing with your time and drop things that aren't necessary or change the necessary things to take less time. For example, stop watching TV. There is no reason in the world why you can't live without Lost and 24. Or exercise while you watch those programs. Use your lunch hour more wisely. Or use your crockpot to cook one pot meals instead of wasting 45 minutes preparing dinner. Or make larger batches of foods you can freeze and just thaw out and heat quickly (such as chili or spaghetti sauce.) Leave your children with their father. It's OK. He's a parent and should have to take responsibility so you can meet your needs, in the same way a mother does for the father. Make sure you are called to the ministry in which you are serving. Of course, you may already be doing some of these thing. These are just common ways I see women wasting their time and spinning their wheels. One thing that has helped me make exercise a priority is to do something off the wall that is fun and challenging. Ice Skating has transformed my life into one where I am excited to practice and learn and socialize with other skaters. You could take tennis lessons, dance classes, kayak, or... the possibilities are endless. You don't have to go to a gym unless you really enjoy it. Just think through other possibilities.

Because of my schedule and my unwillingness to get up any earlier than I have to, I do try to get a walk in every day, and when I go shopping, I park my car further away, take the stairs when I can and just try to walk rather than drive. I also try not to sit down too much during the day. There is always something to do and if I keep busy, I don't get lazy.
