Can you all please throw some ideas my way for what to feed my 18 month old? She is a picky eater and I feel like she just eats the same few things every day. I'm looking for some new ideas because she seems like she's starting to want to try new things at times.
Breakfast isn't really an issue. It's lunch and dinner that I'm having trouble with.
Also, she is obsessed with snacking. She always opens the pantry and begs for goldfish, pretzels, crackers, raisins, etc. I end up giving them to her because I know she is hungry and doesn't eat a lot at meals. I think she has a high metabolism like me.
Thanks everyone!

Or maybe she doesn't eat a lot at meals because you give her so many snacks in between.

The first thing I'd suggest you do is limit snacks, and make sure they are healthy things like fruit or veg.

See then if that makes a difference to her appetite at mealtimes.

Could I also ask what she has to drink? And also, what does she have for breakfast?

I would suggest letting her snack but making the snack fruit or vegetable. She can be getting full of those crackers and pretzels and waiting out meals because she likes the snack better.

My youngest was just like that. He's still a fussy eater. Other then that I have no advice other then to keep giving her new things and asking her to try them. It can take awhile for them to get a taste for them.

I just try to sneak veggies into the meals my oldest will eat....like pasta with cream sauce, I might sneak some peas in there. Or, brocolli cheese rice casserole and cut up the brocolli really tiny. Breaded deep fried veggies like zuccini.

What are the few things she likes to eat...like mac n cheese and hotdogs, that kinda thing? My oldest is kinda like that, but he loves spaghetti too, so I always sneak veggies in the spaghetti sauce, like carrots, zuccini, peas, etc.

My kids have a hard time eating raw veggies, so I cook them and cool them and give them ranch to dip.

Also, drinking milk at mealtimes seems to fill my kids up too fast and they end up not eating much food. You may want to limit milk to just before naps and bed, and not at any other time of day since it's so filling.

We have a 19 month old daughter. hehe

She LOVES to dip things. So, anything you can do with dip (veggies with ranch, fruit with yogurt, etc) might be a hit. It's messy but, hey, she's eating good stuff...

She also loves her little fork, so anything she can stab is on the "fun" list.

I also sometimes let her help pick things out of the fridge... "Apple, grapes, or banana?" When she helps pick it, she's more likely to eat it.

I try to give her a variety on her plate as well... if it's something I don't want to "waste", then I leave it in a separate container so she can get some if she "chooses" that, and if she ignores it, it goes back in the fridge anyway.

But, from what my pediatrician was saying, it's pretty normal for toddlers to clean their plate one day and then pick at it the next.

She doesn't seem to like milk. I give her water with a tiny bit of juice in it to make to water taste better.
For breakfast she eats cereal in milk though. Yogurt, melon, oatmeal, cream of wheat, bits of muffin.
I'm looking for ideas. For dinner and lunch she seems to eat the same thing every day and I want to give her some more variety. It's either hot dogs or chicken (nuggets or sticks). She'll eat sweet potato fries with that and some sort of veggie (mixed veggies or peas or lima beans). I just want some more ideas. What do the rest of you feed your toddlers?
She does like mac and cheese but will only eat a few bites.

Zhi, mine loves her fork too. She'll eat stuff that she can "stab" or scoop with her spoon.

I am going to go against the grain here...

The point is not that she eat balanced meals at mealtimes. The point is that she gets a fairly balanced diet overall (and not over a day, but more like over a week). So instead of keeping meal-type foods at mealtime and snack foods any other time (and they ARE hungry several times a day), why not offer different combinations anytime she's hungry? Goldfish are fine, but she needs some protein with those as well, so maybe some cheese or something. Apples and peanut butter dip (if you are letting her have PB now). Combining a legume (peas, beans) with a grain will give her some protein, as well, so peas and mini breadsticks with some sort of dip would be fine. Yogurt and fruit. That sort of thing.

She is far too young to push the '3 square meals a day' nonsense that this culture seems to live by. So if you are going to go that route, I would wait a while still.

I feed my toddler whatever we are eating unless it's something particularly messy that I don't want to clean up, or if it has something she can't eat.

Breakfast- Oatmeal breakfast cookies, Smoothies, Ham & Cheese, Cheerios & Banana

Lunch- Hotdogs, Lunch meat and cheese, beans and rice... pretty much whatever I'm eating.

Dinner- Whatever we are eating as a family.

I agree with Jenny.

Also, if she won't drink milk, feed her lots of yogurt.

Honestly, if your family all eats things like nuggets, fries, and mac'n'cheese, you're going to have a hard time giving her variety. Those are "palate-tickling" foods and most kids would choose them over fresh veggies, kwim?

I have learned that Hunter loves to be able to dip his food. So make things that she can dip in yogurt, ranch dressing, and ketchup. I would also suggest limiting snacks and then maybe she would have more of an appetite at meal time. Hunter eats breakfast and will sometimes get a small snack in between that and lunch. Then depending on what time he gets up from nap will determine if he gets a snack or what kind of snack he gets.

Lunch: with lunch he usually gets fruit, pretzels, sunflower seeds (already shelled), or cheese to go with it.
peanut butter and jelly
grilled cheese
noodles w/ butter and cheese (favorite)
hot dogs

Dinner: we usually always have a meat, a starch, and a veggie
I make a wide variety and he doesn't always eat everything that is on his plate, but rarely has he refused to eat any of it.

Up until very recently my 15 month old refused to eat any more than a few bites of anything at any given time. All of a sudden int he last week or so she has started eating insane amounts of food (I know other kids who eat as much, it was just a major jump for her!) and I was at a complete loss at what to feed her.

This website helped me TONS! She puts up a toddler menu every week and it has tons of ideas (look in her sidebar, I don't think there is one on the first page). I looked at a whole bunch of them and wrote out a list of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack ideas and put it on my fridge. Now whenever I'm stuck I can look at it and get an idea!

My oldest is really picky, but he'll eat most regular foods except veggies. One thing I do is put his food aside before spicing it up. Like, if I'm making a Chinese stirfry, I put his rice aside and just put butter, salt and pepper since I know he won't eat it with the spices and veggies. Or, if I'm making something with pasta, I'll put his pasta aside and just do butter and parm cheese. If we're having tuna melts for lunch, I don't put tuna on his, just cheese. Not putting meat in his burritos, just beans while the rest of us have meat in ours. That kind of thing. I've learned to make meals that can easily be changed into something Timmy likes while still eating normal adult food for the rest of us. I also buy frozen carrots and corn, so if we're having peas or greanbeans or something he doesn't like, I can easily just take a toddler sized portion of carrots or corn and microwave it with butter and salt and pepper. I won't go totally out of my way and make a whole different meal for him, but it's easy to just add another step to make what we're having into something he'll enjoy too. I also plan ahead and if I know I'm making something tomorrow night that he won't like, then I'll make extra of what we're having tonight and microwave it for his dinner tomorrow.

Nathan will often refuse something if he doesn't recognize it, but that's normal. Youngsters often need several introductions to a food to feel comfortable eating it. Nathan also doesn't like anything to terribly spicey, but that's not unusual either. Little ones have much more sensitve taste buds then we do.

We do breakfast, an early lunch, then nap, after-nap snack, dinner, then bedtime snack. Here's what's on today's menu:

Breakfast: Mac n cheese, cherry tomatoes, grapes.
Lunch: Ham slices, corn on the cob, sweet potatoe french fries (baked not fried)
Snack: Probably a treat from Target, like a pretzel and/or hot dog from the food avenue.
Dinner: Stuffed chicken, perogies and mixed veggies
Bedtime snack: His favorite is popcorn, but he likes other things, too.

Lol, Jen. I am not really afraid of it, right now she eats EVERYTHING and we don't really give much option other then eat it or go hungry.
