UFC is a great forum for experienced professional mixed martial arts. It is regulated and controled. The refs are always looking to stop the fight before someone gets seriously hurt. These men train for hours upon hours to get their bodies into the type of shape to withstand such punishment. These men are professionals in what they do. We as normal individuals go to work/school and train ourselves for our jobs. These fighters just don't go into the ring after a couple training sessions and fight. Many of them are skilled martial artists(ranking belts), NCAA wrestlers, lifelong practioners of the sport. If I was to into the ring with what little knowledge I have about mixed martial arts (Shorin Ryu-Black Belt-Thai Kickboxing) I would get pummeled. Anyone who gets in this ring is a trained athlete. If regular guys were to get in the ring there would be horrible deathly outcomes. All in all I respect these men that fight in the octagon. I know many beleivers would say that the UFC is too violent. Yet, I would point out that warfare, though it may save lives, is very gruesome and mortatly destructive. I wouldn't dare tell a soldier to stop what they are doing. I know these men aren't protecting nations but the fact remains that they are engaged in a career that requires them to be violent and courageous, while respecting the rules of conduct and warfare at the same time.

I actually prefer "amateur MMA" to the UFC. (now that it is "professional"... A sore subject... one day - regular MMA fighter, now an amateur...) When amateur (and even UFC guys start this way) you get to fight in your own club and in other regional clubs. It costs little more than a few dollars to enter, or even to watch. No hoopla and such. I hope it doesn't get regulated too much more. I don't know it needs to be a full time "job", but certainly frequent practice, working out, watching what to eat, sleep, etc., specially before bouts. And, a good friend who can stitch your brow up :D. I think someone with ok body, and a few years of dedication can make it to UFC. I know quite a few who fought, but not by much in the UFC. some only put in 3 to 4 years - not a lifetime. I train mostly with smaller guys, and I hate it. I look like a bear with wolfs around me. If they keep nipping, I will lose. But, if I get a hold of you, you are in trouble.
