I am looking for comments on how to best proceed with the following. For several months I have been writing a column in our church newsletter to acquaint readers with a Hebrew word or concept to enlarge and or enrich our faith, using a lexicon, or commentary words at ancient-hebrew.org as info. Well, this fall I am interested to being an introductory study locally using a prepared workbook to further explore this subject. Our pastor advised me to market this outside the congregation so am using the newsletter column, and contacted the pastor of another church who agreed to "advertize" the study. We will meet twice a month, there are 12 lessons to cover which will mostly be done on one's own time, and the group serves to discuss and talk about people's reactions to what they are reading. I have, up to now, asked interested persons to contact me via email, or talk to me after service, 1 has. If I want to involve outsiders, should I try to go to their church service and make an announcement, advertize in a weekly community shopper newspaper, or what? The subject is Introduction to Hebrew Heritage using a scaled down version of the textbook Our Father Abraham by Wilson. I did a group on Abraham last year, it ran a little to long, 6 months, lost half the group to other things in that time. As stated, feedback on how to promote this would be desired and appreciated as well as your prayers. Doctrinally this may be a bit controvertial, but sometimes truth seen at an extreme gets people thinking about their faith expression, and that has been made clear in my column from the start. That may be why only 1 has shown interest, mere congecture. Thanks in advance, look forward to your thoughts!

Hi

A couple of points to ponder:

1. Did your pastor give any reasons for promoting it outside the church? Was it to recruit additional people? or was it instead of doing it inside your church?
2. Is you pastor giving you his/her endorsement to go to other churches? It would be unusual for someone from another church to come and advertise something that wasn't already agreed between the church leaders.

Hi Nigel, thanks for posing the questions. I think he felt that as a result of a film shown last Fall produced by PBS on similarities between Jews and Christians in worship and general world views that some of the ideas put forth by "messianics" would be better served to market this to others besides those in my church. It was not well received by the 15 to 20 folk who came to view the film. So, he more less gave me his blessing to do what I felt lead to do. I have sent my columns to the other church being invited so their minister knows my intentions and that I take the topic seriously. I think next month, August, will be the defining time for this, as the group would potentially start in mid October and people are asked to order their own workbook from the designated ministry. I even thought of posting an ad in a local weekly but at the same time, somewhat hesitant. Excuse the rambling, but still opened for feedback..

Have you considered contacting the Pastor's and asking for a flyer insert announcing your class to be included with their Sunday bulletin?

Most newspapers also have a "faith and values" section, or "religious briefs" section which allows free listing of your event, so I would use that approach as well.

Does your local cable company have a community bulletin where you can send church news as well?

That's just a couple of ideas we use.
