Not too sure, but ... set apart for a specific, particular calling?

He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come." 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 All Christians are anointed. It simply means that we have received the indwelling Holy Spirit, the very life of God and His seal of ownership, guaranteeing our salvation. We are all ministers of the New Covenant. Pastors, teachers and counselors are simply gifts to the Body, but they are not any more "anointed" than you or I. Grace and Peace

We all have certain things God's wants us to do and they are all important. Certain calling are seen more openly by other people, but everything that God calls us to do is equally important.

Set a part, anointed to obedience-Hebrews 2:10-"For it became him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the author of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11 For both he that sanctified(set a part, anointed to obedience)and they that are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he(the anointed)is not ashamed to call them brethren, 12 saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, In the midst of the congregation will I sing thy praise." Here's the balance-Romans 12:6-"We(all redeemed souls)have faculties unique to the grace given us; exercise them according to one’s level of simple faith. 7 Seize your opportunities for service and in so doing teach the validity of Christ’s sacrifice. 8 When he exhorts to further obedience, exhort for the spiritual growth of the body since you’ll be included. When he gives, give in cooperation [for] God will accomplish His purposes and missing an opportunity to participate with God’s sacrifice misses our blessing to be involved. When one is a leader, lead with authority and diligence; When you’re called to show mercy, show mercy genuinely 9[and]let your love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is arrogant but cling to what is obedient to Christ. 10 Give mutual preference in honor 11 with no lag in due diligence and always fervent in your service as your sacrifice to the Lord. 12 Rejoice in your hope, persevering in tribulation and devoted in obedience 13 contributing to the needs of the saints and practicing consideration."

I'm glad you asked this question. "Anointing" or "Anointed" has been misused and abused, especially among religious circles. I agree with GraceBro's description. Our giftings and talents are each different within the body to and for the Glory of God alone. We weren't given them to exalt ourselves or others. As we have seen in today's society, most notably, some have been exalted in order to manipulate and control the body for self aggrandizing ministers. Rom 2:11 For there is no partiality with God. He doesn't see us, individually, as more important than another one of His children. Some have more responsibility than others, because of their giftings and talents, but it doesn't mean that He has reserved a more special place in His heart for them. Rarely have I seen the talent of someone that God is given the glory for that person's talent. Such as the lady who delivers a message in music during the Sunday service. We thank her and tell her, she did a wonderful job. We don't stand up and praise God because He blessed us with her beautiful voice, so we could share in the praising and honoring of Him. The idea of it may be understood as that occurring, but not everyone gets it in this day and age of the entertainment value of church. As a sidenote on the misuse of it. A friend of mine, believes that only certain people should pray for her. She desires to have these people pray for her because they reveal things to her during the prayer. She believes these anointed people have a one line track, straight to God and nobody else's prayers are beneficial to her. They are on a pedestal. She doesn't know how confused she is. The power does not come from them or their prayers, the healing comes from God-alone. The wisdom comes from God-alone. People are nothing without God, empty shells for their souls longing for the connection to their maker. Self delusion creates a chasm of deception. A focus on the body for the healing of the body. We are warned of this happening all through the NT. We are anointed because we are God's children, not because of who we would like to be as God's children.

The "annointed one" was considered the same as "the Christ" (Greek) or "Messiah" (Hebrew) which means the choosen one or marked out for a special purpose or set aside (a holy one) like in Psalm 23, "You annoint my head with oil". Unfortunately today it really means the qualified one.

For us New Testament believers (meaning we know we are not Jews living in the Old Testament), the word 'anointed' has two meanings. The first one is regarding Jesus Christ as the "chosen one" (Luke 4:18-19, Acts 10:38). When Jesus left the earth, He left us the gift of the Holy Spirit (John 14:6) - now all Christians, all those who are born-again, are anointed, chosen for the specific purpose of furthering God's Kingdom (1 John 2:20). Sadly and strangely enough, out of ignorance and emotional appeal, many in various church circles today have taken the word 'anointing' and turned it into something erroneous. In describing a certain pastor or preacher, they will comment with "so and so has a double portion of the anointing...." or "send in $1,000 and I will impart my anointing to you, you will become my armor bearer!" When you are a born-again believer you are anointed. And you cannot get double portions of salvation nor can someone "impart" their anointing to you. "Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee" (2 Corinthians 1:21-22).

Thanks, once again, earthless.
