I caught the tail end of a story on the news last night. An athlete who wasn't happy about his bronze medal so he threw it on the ground and walk off the stage.

Has anyone heard this story? Who was the athlete?

Never mind...I just found out on the Olympics thread...boy, what a shame. I'm glad he wasn't representing the US.

Yeah, I saw this story. To call this guy's behavior "childish" is an understatement.

I suspect he won't be asked back by Sweden to compete in the next Olympics in London (2012).

I heard about that. What a 2 year old. He deserved to have it taken since he didn't want it anyway.

I think he should have been banned from international competetion in addition to being stripped of his bronz medal.

He was protesting the judging, was he not. Does anybody know if the judging was fair?

According to NBC:

After he took the bronze in the 84 kilogram weight class, two-time former world champion Ara Abrahamian said, "I don't care about this medal. I wanted gold. This will be my last match. I wanted to take gold, so I consider this Olympics a failure."

He certainly didn't like the color of his medal. During the medal ceremony, he took the bronze from around his neck and, in disgust, dropped it on the mat in protest as he walked away.

what a jerk

Hey I'd have taken it from him if he didn't want it. And then you can find it on e-bay!

BTW, he can start on the WWF circuit as "Crybaby" they can give him a rattle and a bottle and he can wear a diaper in the ring. I've seen sillier things on WWF, so he'll fit right in!

If he thought the judging was not fair, there are ways to handle it/appeal it that don't include acting like a two year old.

LOL...that's funny. And sadly, you could probably sell it for a lot of $$ just because of the scandal with it.

And of course the US haven't ever done anything like this before...

Check out the basketball final from 1972 between the USSR and the US.

The US may not have dropped the medal, but they refused it ~ it's still in a bank vault in MUnich.

Now I'm not saying the US was in the wrong to refuse their medals, from my understanding, it all got very complicated at the end of the game.

I am saying that anyone who competes at this level is going to have emotions running mega high, whatever the result.
