Has anybody read this book. I finished it last month and thought it was great. It's a semi-fictional story of a pastor struggling to keep his congregation together as they attempt to remain relevant to current culture without sacrificing the traditions of the past. Sound familiar? I hear similar stories from pastors and Christian friends everyday. I'd like to know your thoughts.

I read this a few months ago--I enjoyed it. I was thinking recently about the conflicting information that is out there concerning making changes in a church. I think the traditional school of thought for pastors is not to make any changes until you've been there for at least 6 months--other, more "church-growth" literature states that churches are the most open to change when they get a new pastor and they are still in the "honeymoon" stage, so you should start small as soon as you get there and don't stop, or you will lose momentum. I think this book had a good discussion on the truths about some of the traditions we hold so dear. I think the key is education, and moving in love as the Spirit leads.

I particularly enjoyed the historical reiew on hymnology and how controversial today's "traditional" stuff was when it was introduced. It really gave great perspective....I think expecially for the older folks who are struggling with why the newer generations want to find their own "unique voice" in worship. Thanks for replying.
