Just asking for fun I guess...

What meal or meal item or dessert etc... gives you the most trouble?

I can't make gravy for the life of me!! Even gravy from a can I manage to ruin somehow.. I've been shown, given suggestions, had gravy mixes bought for me etc.. can't do it.. LOL

thought I'd ask so I wouldn't feel so alone.. or laughed at as much by my "friends" and family

Took me years to manage a decent gravy. I still only do it on Thanksgiving and absolutely must have a jar (heat and serve) as a back-up. I spent over 10 years trying to cook a medium rare hamburger for Mark - they normally came out medium well and now they are more on the lines of "cripple the cow and leave it by the table." Well maybe in our 3rd decade together I'll find the happy place.

I call them hockey pucks.

I had a tough time with gravy until I started using corn starch instead of flour to thicken it.

My biggest problem is meatballs. Mine always come out like little cannonballs no matter what I do.

My problem is pie crust. Mine tastes fine, but I cannot get it rolled out and in the pan without tearing it or having it too thin in some places and too thick in others. I gave up. I buy the Pillsbury stuff that is already rolled out for you.

I can't do cake...even from a mix. Every time I try it turns our horrible. I can't ice either. I am very crafty, and can pretty much do anything with a paint brush, but can not for the life of me figure out how to translate that over into a cake icing masterpiece. I can tell you how to do it, but can't do it myself. I know tons of tricks. I even took a Wilton Cake class...no dice, still can't do cakes. SOOOOOOO...when one of the kids birthdays comes up, I just go to WM's bakery and we let them pick something out.

Banana bread.

I've attempted to make it a few times and it doesn't taste like it's suppose to. It's a shame too, because I really really really love that bread!

pie crust.

also bad at having anything ready at a certain time - so used to dh running in and out and eating on no schedule and wanting to eat as soon as he is ready. (I usually make things ahead and then nuke veggies.)

That might not be you. That might be your oven. I used to make beautiful cakes before I moved to this apartment. Now, I can only get cupcakes to turn out right. That's fine with me; I don't eat much cake.

Some ovens are like that.

I don't have to worry about it. Unless I am cooking for myself, I'm not allowed to cook in the kitchen. I am allowed to grill (and I'm good there except for grilled veggies).

But I can cut up fruit and put it on a plate real well.

Sugar cookies... I can make pretty much any other kind of dessert, but for some reason I cannot do sugar cookies. I guess I have not had any luck making brownies from scratch and getting the texture to turn out right either.

What goes wrong with your sugar cookies?

Baked fish!

I can fry it all day long and it's awesome, but stick it in the oven and it comes out under-done or over-done...and we love fish! ugh...

Oatmeal. I can cook and bake all sorts of elaborate things, but I almost ALWAYS mess up on oatmeal. Simple oatmeal.

Are you using very very ripe bananas? The softer and gooier the banana the better the bread. If the bananas aren't ripe enough the bread is heavy and tastes like soap.

That, too, may very well be your oven.

This solved that problem for me.

Grilling chicken. Once in a while I don't time it right and then it is undercooked.

Not much really. Stew always comes out bad if I leave it in the slow cooker and come home to it several hours later. However, when I'm home and can watch it, it's fine.

Thank you, Laura, for the tip. You're probably right, my bananas were probably not ripe enough. And yes, the bread has an extremely odd taste. Thanks again! :)

Do you chill your pastry before rolling it ~ if not, wrap it in cling film and put it in the fridge for 30 minutes or so.

I wrap my pastry in a large piece of cling film and then roll the pastry out between the cling film (you have to lift the cling film every so often to avoid it tearing). It means that you don't have to keep adding flour though. (I've also heard, but not tried yet, that you should only roll pastry away from you ~ roll a couple of times and then turn it 180 degrees so that the unrolled part gets rolled.)

I also (learnt when I was 11!) roll the pastry around the rolling pin when I am ready to line the tine with it ~ it helps to stop it stretching (and so tearing).

You can also fold the crust in half and then in half again (making a pie shape) then transfer it to your pie pan and unfold it.
