This may sound like a silly question on this forum, but I was asked this the other day, and i couldn't really explain it. I know SG music when i hear i for the most part, and can give examples of groups, but I couldn't give him an answer that identified SG music. Does anyone have any good definitions? I thought about the broad scope of groups that are considered SG. I mean you have the Isaacs, all the way to the Imperials. That's a broad brush to be painting with.

For what it's worth: Southern Gospel Progressive Southern Gospel I agree that it is a broad brush. The evolution from the traditional four part harmony male quartets (still my favorite) has been dramatic.

Wow, I'm disappointed it the lack of responses here. I thought that surely on this forum, there'd be plenty of help on this topic. I figured that many of you would have been asked the same question, and had some sort of answer that you gave.... Kerrlaw, thanks for your help.

You'll probably get more responses later...this place isn't very busy this time of day. I have to agree with Kerr's answers though. Kind of hard to follow up the master of words ya know?! I'm sure Daniel probably will answer your question when he comes back on the forums today. Good question though...I would probably have a hard time answering such a question too without giving examples of groups and such.

This topic comes up at least once a year. Try this for a little discussion until others join in: What is Southern Gospel?

The problem is there is no clear definition in 2008 of what Southern Gospel music is. We've got to remember Southern Gospel is a term that has only been used since the mid to late '70s.

I will agree with the OP that it is very difficult to explain it, especially when you look at the different type of singers and groups and songs. Quartet Gospel is, or used to be, a little easier to explain. It was gospel music sang with 4 part harmony, using tenor, baritone and bass vocals, with a lead singer who may be either tenor or baritone. That's not nearly as hard to explain as "Southern Gospel" as a genre.

I think Southern Gospel is defined more by who you know and who you associate with than anything else (except probably predominant vocal harmonies). By this I mean that Southern Gospel is composed of people who trace their musical roots to previous generations of singers identified as being within our genre. Since there are so many styles that comprise Southern Gospel, it seems that it's more a self-identifying genre than a genre someone can listen from outside and recognize at a glance.
