We use wash cloths, bought in the kitchen dept. of Kmart in our kitchen to clean the stove, counters and microwave. We wash them in the washing machine with a detergent that is scented and use a Bounce dryer sheet in the dryer so they should smell okay. We use one once and it stinks! It smells like we've used it and had it out for days! Sometimes when I take it out of the dryer, it smells funky, even though it's just been washed. When I wash and dry it again, it smells okay.

Why does this happen and what can I do about it? It's not like I am using it to clean a lot of stinky, smelly things. Sometimes I wet it, clean up some crumbs and it smells like it's spoiled rotten!

You probably have some synthetic fabric. Get some cloth ones .. cotton if you can.

Do you spread them out and let them dry out totally every night or are they left folded and damp?

I do my towels and washclothes with a little bleach once in a while. they get moldy and the mold seems to survive washing. Of course, we have a season where the air is very damp even though the heat is on indoors.

I have to wash my towels and washclothes in hot water with bleach (about 1/2 cup or so for a full load) or they stink after just a couple of uses too.

We don't reuse fabric cloths or sponges in our kitchen ... so I'm not sure. But my guess is that they aren't as clean as they could be?

We have them hung over the faucet. My sister says that she leaves hers up for a whole week before she washes them and they don't smell like ours does. She has even less counter space than we do so she does the same with hers. They are a light brown color so bleach is out although color safe bleach is okay. We wash them with all the other clothes. We use cold water so nothing runs and we save on energy. My sister does her laundry once a week at our house because her apartment is so small she can't fit a table in there, never mind a washer or dryer. I wish I could figure it out. Sometimes they come out of the dryer smelling a little funky and I will re-wash them. I shouldn't have to do that though.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Do you rinse them through in clean water at the end of every day before they're hung over the faucet?

I always rinse them out before I hang them up. Run the water, rinse them out. They are also 100% cotton, I checked today, so that can't be the problem. I took all of them and threw them in the wash today with all the other clothes, the one dirty one and all the ones in the drawer. Let's hope that does the trick. Oh no, I forgot the color safe bleach! I will probably wash them again.

Had that problem with DH's gym towel (which he stubbornly wants to keep even though we have lots of newer ones). Try soaking it in vinegar whenever you wash it. Or replacing them if they've seen a few rounds; either cotton or something with antibacterial properties.

Also, dryer sheets aren't that great with washcloths and towels, as it reduces their absorbency. That could be part of the problem; besides, the dryer sheet and scented detergent will only mask the smell, not remove it.

These are new wash cloths. Probably only a year old, maybe not even a year.

You say dryer sheets and scented detergent mask the smell. If that's true, why does my sister, who does her laundry at our house and uses both on her wash cloths, not have that smell in hers? I am so willing to bet her wash cloths are way older than ours. That's what I don't understand. We both use the same detergent and fabric softener. She doesn't buy her own like she used to. Her wash cloths are older than ours are. I'm not even sure if hers are 100% cotton, where as I know ours are. Yet hers don't smell after being out for a week and ours smell after a day or so. It really bugs me!

I would toss them and buy new if I couldn't get the smell out.

The smell is from bacteria and fungus, as said before. Once it is in it, very hard to get out.

I have the same problem with sponges if I leave them out wet at the edge of the sink for too long. I run them through the dishwasher to give them a bit longer life.

Maybe there is something wrong with your tapwater. Old pipes?

Cuddles, I would almost agree with you but as I said, my sister does her laundry and wash cloths at our house as she doesn't have a washer and dryer and he's don't have that problem.

I washed them with hot water and color safe bleach and regular detergent. I haven't taken them out of the dryer so I will see if that helped. Will let you guys know.

Hi Gail,
I was thinking more of your taps at the kitchen sink, rather than the washing machine. But then that wouldn't make sense because if you are drinking the tapwater you would notice something not quite right.

Sure is a mystery!

If after doing that and they still smell I would just toss them and buy some new ones.

Glad that worked for you. Towels are the one thing I always wash in hot water.
