If you have seen one to many questionable Flash Player adds like I have, you may have found your self wanting to disable it on occasion without removing it. As it turns out, it’s pretty simple to do. All you need is two batch files. One batch file renames the Flash Player DLL so it can’t be found by your browser (should work with any browser). The other batch file changes the name back. The catch is that you have to run the batch file before you launch your browser because once the DLL has been started, any name changes will not be recognized until you restart your browser. This works pretty well with Firefox because it has that Save and Quit option when you exit with more than one tab open. This allows you to restart the browser and go back to the same page you were looking at. Instructions: Open up Notepad and add the following line to it: rename C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32.dll StopNPSWF32.dll Save this file to your desktop for easy access and name it something like DisableFlash.bat . It’s critical that you give this file a name a with a “.bat” file extension. However, this can be a bit difficult to do when naming files with notepad because it seems to want to name it with a “.txt” file extension. This can be easily fixed by right clicking on the file after it has been saved and selecting the rename option and then changing it manually. Now open Notepad again and add the following line to it: rename C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\StopNPSWF32.dll NPSWF32.dll Save this file to your desktop and give it a name that is something like EnableFlash.bat . Now to disable flash, all you need to do is double click the DisableFlash.bat file and start your browser. To enable it, exit your browser and double click on the EnableFlash.bat file. The above should work on Windows XP and Vista. If can’t find the NPSWF32.DLL that means that you are running and old version of flash ( I am running version 10.X) and you might want to consider upgrading just for security purposes. Since the batch files modify a file in the \Windows\System32 directory, you may need to have admin privileges for it to run.

While that is a way to disable Flash in any browser, if you're using Firefox there are better options. Personally I use NoScript, which disables javascript, Flash and more until the user whitelists specific domains. It can be a pain at first, giving permissions to sites you trust, but I find it much better than the alternative of just letting every site run code on my machine without permission. Other options are Flashblock, which blocks Flash elements until you click on them, and Adblock Plus, which can be used to block content very specifically (I generally only block ads that cause pop-ups, are offensive in some fashion, or are poorly coded and use up all my system resources.)

Or, also in FireFox, "Adblock Plus" will do just the same, selectively (prescripted), or on-demand (click on the specific item to block). It also can block any other kind of items.
