Twice I saw news of Preacher Rick Warren interviewing the presidetial candidates, and both times I managed to miss the day and time, it is either tonight or tomorrow I am pretty sure. I see nobody has mentioned it yet, but apparantly they both like Rick Warren and he likes both of them, so it was agreed upon. Just looking for the time/date/ and station!

I am going to Tivo it, with more of an interest in learning about Warren's position than any new revelation about the candidates.

I would just like to know if Warren's political agenda is as far off base as his book.

Thanks

I'm surprised at all the buzz this forum has gotten on the cable news stations. News of the forum is all over CNN, Fox and MSNBC.

I wish they were both on the same stage answering the same questions, but it will be interesting to see how they responds to issues of faith that don't focus on abortion and gay marriage.

I agree, but let's get a definitive answer on abortion and gay marriage also.

I just don't know if Warren will have the intestional fortitude to ask the serious question and then follow up if the candidates try to spin the answer.

His Church is a seeker friendly Church you know; don't want to ruffle any feathers.

Thanks

I don't really follow politics, but when I get bored or it relates to Christianity I may check out what is going on. I am watching this show live on Saddleback's website. John McCain seems like the genuine article for a Christian in the way that he answered. He said that he is also pro-life.

IMO, America is not a nation that seeks after God, when we allow even 1 abortion to take place. Our nation deserved to be destroyed.

I think this was one of the best Presidential candidate exchanges ever. The winner in this case may really have been Rick Warren - he made evangelicals look smart, fair, and caring.

Beyond that I think it gave us the clearest view of the character of these two men we have to date. And if we are willing to take each man at his word, then we have a pretty definitive idea about what each will do in their administrations, at least as much as we can know such things.

The most suprising thing to me was McCain - he aliiiiive!!!

Well after watching both Obama and McCain being interviewed here are my impressions:

1. Obama is definitely a Christian and comfortable talking about his faith.

2. McCain is not comfortable talking about his faith -- I was left not knowing whether or not he was a Christian.

3. Obama thought about the questions and answered Rick Warren directlly.

4. McCain rarely looked at Rick and used his hour to regurgitate his town hall speeches. You could tell he had very canned and rehearsed answer which was a shame because he didn't give people an opportunity to learn about him.

5. Obama came across very humble admitting his faults and his dependence on God.

6. McCain often didn't let Rick finish asking the question before jumping in with a pre-rehearsed answer. McCain main purpose seemed to be to focus on saying what he had to in order to appease the far right. IMO he came across as very phoney.

Did anyone else watch? What were your thoughts?

again didn't see the show did Warren ask the Annointed one how he could justify leaving a down syndrome baby who had surrived an abortion alone to die. Did he ask him how he could justify partial birth abortion?

McCain did AWESOME. And completely lucid. I was planning on voting for McCain, he did much better than I expected.

Now, I've never been to sattleback church but I'm pretty confident that it doesn't preach liberation theology.

You may want to log on to the sattleback church website and see if they have the forum online. You may be surprised at Obama's answers (unless of course you don't care what Obama says if it disagrees with what you've heard from Sean Hannity of Rush Limbaugh )

Actually I thought Obama was very personal and sincere.

But I disagree with what Evangel70 said about McCain. I think a man who is able to maintain a faith in and recognize Christ working in a stinking horrible prison for five years is every bit as sincere, if not more so, than a man who says the same thing every Christain says about the basics of his faith. Jesus said we would know His followers by their fruits, not their words.

And John McCain's acknowledgement of the moral failing of his divorce was extremely humble.

He asked him if he ever voted to limit abortion in any way, or something to that effect - to which I thought Obama hemmed and hawed.

I watched it...but I'm wondering if you and I saw the same thing!

Every point you made, I would have made the opposite.

First, I'm always skeptical when politicians speak about their personal faith. They know most Americans consider themselves "Christians" so that's what they usually say. Many have even caught onto the phrase "born again" and realize that's a good answer. So I dont' feel comfortable saying, difinitively that Obama is a Christian, just based on the answer to that question. Same with McCain...but I feel his answer more closely matches the rest of the package. I'd be more inclined to believe him, for that reason.

Nope...I definitely came away with different impressions than you did. I can very clearly see the partisan views in your observations, though.

I agree that the winner tonight, even more so than Warren, was the format. It was the best, most common-sense way to go about it. And, interestingly enough, I think any candidate would look pretty good in that format.

I still don't like the PDL drivel...but Warren did a good job and did ask pertinent questions. There are some questions I'd have liked him to ask or carry a bit further, but oh well. I also think each candidate received the respect they deserved...both from Warren and the audience. They were all gracious, polite and civilized toward the candidates.

Just my two cents...

I guess I expected McCain to express his faith as someone who as the bible says is, "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have" rather than go into a narrative of his life.

Of course I have a boss who goes into 20 minute narratives instead of giving 5 minute answers so I may have a personal bias against narratives versus straight answers.

I don't think that means "Give the standard evangelical boilerplate answer"; I think witnessing about how Christ made a difference while one was being tortured unjustly in prison certainly "gives a reason for the hope" as much, if not better, than many could muster.
