Hi:

I am interested in getting an MP3 player. I was hoping you could recommend some. I hear however, that many MP3 players have an internal battery that is rechargeable. I like the recharge capability, but, I also heard, you cannot replace the battery. What happens when you can't recharge anymore?

Anyways, just looking for some good recommendations..good sound, durability, etc.

Thanks...

You send it to them and they will replace it for a fee, however by that time the prices have come down on the new ones so it isn't that much to buy a newer one.

If you don't want to go with apple there are other cheaper players out there and a few use regular batteries, though there won't be as many accessories for them.

I have the Nano. If use it for exercising make sure you get a flash based player (no hard drive).

I have never been disappointed with iPods. They are durable, the batteries are suprisingly long lasting. Easy to charge though a USB port and easy to load with music through iTunes. And even though I've never run my battery all the way down, I'm sure you could ship it to Apple for a new battery. Somebody correct me on that if I am wrong. And of course you don't have to have a Mac. ITunes works on PCs too.

Everyone in my family is on their second round of iPods. We were a fairly early adapter with 1st gen Mini, 2 first gen Shuffles and a 1st gen Nano.

Now I have a Classic, DH has a square Nano (I think that's 3rd gen, not sure), DD#1 has an iTouch (got it for free when buying her school laptop) and DD#2 has a square Nano.

We use them a LOT. DH is an OTR trucker and uses his on the road. We download sermon podcasts from church for him. I like the generous hard drive on the Classic, and have some tv shows and movies on it to watch when waiting in doctor's offices, etc. DD#1 likes the games and apps available for the iTouch (most of the iPhone aps also work on the iTouch), and DD#2 is constantly updating her playlists.

My iPod Classic holds a charge for a really long time. I play relaxation music many nights when I'm going to sleep and the playlist lasts 2 to 3 hours. I may have to charge it once a week. My old iPod Mini only held the charge for about four hours.

I suggest buying them refurbished from the online Apple store. They have the same warranty as the full priced ones.

THere are many places online that will either sell you a battery or put one in for you. If the mp3 player is older than 3 years old, though, you might want to spend a little bit more and get a new player.

I have been constantly surprised how long my Classic holds a charge. I bought a car radio adapter that charges at the same time. I don't think my battery status bar has been below halfway ever since.

Buying one may also depend on what you plan on using it for. I am thinking of getting one and have been doing research. It appears that some of the cheaper ones do not support all formats. This is important especially if you want to listen to Podcasts, watch video content, etc.

Most people here have mentioned i-pods, but there are other brands too. I have a Toshiba Gigabeat. Plays all kinds of audio files, but only .wma videos. Has a built in radio as well, which is something i-pods don't have. It interfaces with Windows Media Player 10 and above (comes on the instal disk if you haven't upgraded for a while).

ETA: Comes with an AC & a USB charger. Also, I sent away my original Gigabeat on warranty and they replaced it with the new model. Never had a problem with the battery yet, I've had it about 18 months.

Yeah, I think when one considers the "iPods vs. other brands" thing, you've got to consider "what do I want?"

One of the big differences between the iPods and others is the amount of accessories, and that these days it's really easy to buy a boom box, clock radio, etc. where the iPod can not only connect but also charge (and sometimes these have other features, like a remote that will control both a boom box and the attached iPod). Many of these devices also have a headphone sized cable that you can connect to another kind of mp3 player, but the players will not charge. That's also true of car FM transmitters - you can get iPod ones that charge whereas most other devices don't have that. There are some accessories out for Zune but the selection is very limited compared to iPod compatible accessories.

And then you have features like FM radio on the player itself, which iPod doesn't have. That's not an important feature for me. But for others it might be.

It depends on your wants, since no one really needs very much. I wanted a player that allows me to drag media files onto it (like a removable drive) that will automatically be added to the library and function properly. Most do this fine, except iPod. I went with a Sansa Fuze. I don't think you really have to worry much about the battery. I was concerned about the battery but it lasts like forever, easily 12-hours. The ones that use AAA batteries require bigger cases, which wasn't an issue for me, but there just aren't many players with removable batteries available.

Around our house, we have iPods and Sansas (and others). Honestly, I prefer the Sansa.

In my opinion, the iPods have a brain-dead way of keeping music synced to the computer by maintaining a shadow directory on the pc. And when someone like me comes along and says "why am I running out of space on my hard drive", and then deletes that shadow directory, because I don't have an iPod, they hear their daughter a few days later scream "what happened to all of my music?????" after she connects and it syncs to an empty directory.

Yes Apple-heads, I know that can be avoided if we changed the way we do things. But since the kids tend to always come back to the one "main" computer and since all the kids simply aren't willing to take the time to have individual logins, they tend to share the problems. And we have 6 kids

I like my Sansa, its removable back, and its replaceable battery.

And the Sansa works well with Linux, always a plus.

My daughters are keeping their libraries on their own computers. Hubby and I keep our library on my computer. I'm trying to keep it as the "master library" which means I need to connect to theirs and import into mine when they buy new songs. I actually had hubby sign on as a different user till I figured out that (on the Mac at least) you can have multiple iPods updating off the same computer. That was actually more convenient for us. I've got a 320 gb external drive so that's what I use to store the library, and back it up on another drive "just in case."

For some players (iPod and Zune among them) the battery is not meant to be user replaceable. It is possible to DIY, but difficult (and warranty voiding). If a battery in one like these dies, then you can send it back to the manufacturer to have the battery replaced, for a price (usually high). There are third-party battery replacements available as well.

Other players with rechargeable batteries are designed to be user replaceable. My Insignia Pilot is one of them. If my battery dies before I'm ready to part with my player, I can order one from Best Buy (Insignia is their store brand). Current price is ~$55. Not much cheaper than it costs to get a battery replaced on a comparable iPod nano, I'm surpised to find. I'd still reccomend the Insignia Pilot, though, if Best Buy still sold it.
