Today I watched through Kings Gold IV and You're Not Alone, by the Kingsmen, and noticed some disturbing things. One I had noticed before, because I was there when You're Not Alone was filmed, but the other 2 were pretty disappointing to see. 1. In Kings Gold IV, during "If You Ever Needed The Lord Before", Tim Riley says the word "master" when saviour should have been said, so you can see his lips saying master, but hear saviour? Does this mean that the audio for the whole song has been re-done, or just that word? Either way it's a bit dishonest. I mean mess ups and word changes are part of music, and I think should be left alone. 2. The same type thing happens in "Jesus Won My Battle" on You're Not Alone Ray Reece isnt singing, but the audio heard is saying "Jesus Won My Battle". 3. Applause inserted when the audience isnt clapping. During a couple spots on You're Not Alone you hear a loud ovation, but the audience isn't doing anything. I know this was pre-done, because before the concert Greg Fox had the audience do a light polite clap, a laughing bit, like they had told a joke, and then a really "into it" clapping. Does Gospel music really need to be doing these things. The word changes are one thing, but to add applause where the audience didn't clap seems to me like trying to "fake" excitement. I love the You're Not Alone video, but the fake applause really bugs me. I'm interested to see if anyone else has experienced these types of things, and if I'm the only one that is bugged by it.

Yes, I've see this happen but it doesn't bug me! The ones where I know about the edits, they were really necessary for a variety of reasons and I'm glad they were changed!! There was one part of one song in particular that had me scratching my head because I remembered it happening totally different than what ended up on the finished product but that was OK with me, too! I think the projects still had the feeling of excitement and spontaneity that you expect from a live project.

Trust me, if these simple typical edits offend you, you won't want to watch ANYTHING on video, be it religious or secular; musical or dramatic; news footage or educational. Simply put, non-edited video pretty much went out in the early 60s. Even as rough as the original Gaither Homecoming video seems to appear, it actually was expertly molded into a watchable (not to mention, marketable) piece from 100's of short, jagged clips. THey did a great job, with what they had to work with. I'm confident in saying that over 99.9% of all Southern Gospel recordings (audio and video) in the last 25 years have been 'sweetened' in some way in the post-studio. When it's done really well, even experts would have a hard time picking it apart. If that's wrong, there's a WHOLE LOT of wrong out there. To my way of thinking, God sent us His very best, when He sent Jesus to die for us. Who are we NOT to give our very best in anything we do that represents Him? I'm reasonably certain that not one video editor had a deceptive motive behind covering up a bad shot with a cut away crowd shot. As for 'canned' applause, that's been an industry fixture ever since radio TV has been in existence. It's kind of like saying, "Chevrolet put fiberglass all over the frame of my Corvette, so that I wouldn't see that is is really just a series of iron frames and rubber hoses underneath. Those fakkers..."

I just re-read your OP... If you are basically just asking "Does poorly placed canned applause bug anyone else?" Then, yes, it does. Big time. It should be mixed in at a proper level, and so tastefully done, that no one would even recognize that it was placed in during post production. Now, when it sounds as out of place as The Queen of England at a Chitlin' Cook Off, then, well, yes, I agree with you, that WOULD bug me... But that's just me... And, yes, I have seen PLENTY of poorly edited SG videos. Wish we had a higher standard!

Most "live" videos are touched up back in the studio, sometimes with complete songs re-recorded. Rarely do you get a completely LIVE project with no editing.

This is pretty standard - audio is re-done, musicians added sometimes, crowd shots re-staged. Sometimes the live audio is subpar or the mix is out of balance in certain places and they go back in and fix those things. Sometimes there is a very small crowd for the size of the room and all of the crowd shots are from a small section where there is a larger concentrated group of people. When the original Cathedral Reunion video was filmed (not the Gaither one), for example, it starts out with the current group at that time (Glen, George, Roger, Scott and Ernie) with Roger on piano and Scott playing bass. You hear drums, but there is no drummer present - that was added later. In 1994 the group "The Sound", along with Scott Fowler as a solo artist and DeDe Chadwell as a solo artist recorded video at Calvary Temple in Irving, TX one night. The crowd was kind of spread out in the huge building so there were selected shots inserted from that morning's worship crowd. These kind of thing enhance the finished project.

I have been to one live taping and two groups were taping. There were only about 75 of us in an chuch that seated about 250. Every one was asked to move down front so they could get some crowd shots to edit in. One of the groups did a song twice becase they messed up pretty good the first time through. Even though I like both groups, because of all the cameras moving and breaks between the songs and stuff it was not like seeing a group in a church service and there was no Spirit moving. I didn't buy the DVD (you could pre-order at the taping)but some did and I'm sure that there have been those blessed by the DVD. I will probably not attend another live taping unless it's a group that I have no other way to see without traveling a long distance.

It can be very distracting, but the ones I've been to were good experiences for me and I did buy all of the projects that came out!

I've been a fan at many of these over the years, and have been blessed to have been a part of quite a few live productions in recent years. I've never ever been distracted by the equipment, no more than I would be with a standard PA set, etc. Some of the most exciting concerts I've ever been to were recorded live in some form or fashion. Sure, there's the occaisional stop down, and start back up, but that adds to the excitement, of knowing that people are concerned with producing something special to use to glorify God. I'm sorry some of you have had bad experiences, and am quite thankful that I don't see the down side of producing good quality live recordings for our future enjoyment.

I'm with the majority here. I've been at video tapings, and stops / restarts haven't bothered me. I understand enough of what goes into a taping that the technical aspect doesn't bother me, and it's fun to watch a recording taking place.
