This thought comes out of meditation on Psalm 138 and the continual battle our flesh has with being real. Our flesh wants to 'appear' as being good so puts on its pretty little church face, all the while confessing with its lips our badness.

Psalm 138 is a wonderful psalm of praise and thanksgiving for the Lord's lovingkindness toward us. And verse 6 says:

For though the Lord is exalted,
Yet He regards the lowly;
But the haughty He knows from afar.

Who are the lowly?

They are the ones who are REAL, truthful. They are not playing a game. They are not putting on a pretty little church face. They are telling God like it is. They are telling others like it is. They are honest.

And God regards them. Regards means to esteem, respect! That is who God regards, those who are honest, truthful, and REAL with Him.

But the haughty He knows from afar. Why? They won't be honest. They won't be known for who they truly are. They won't be real. And if we won't be real with God, we can't know Him. The distance is created by us, not God.

And the psalm continues:

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, Thou wilt revive me.

That's what being real results in---knowing God, knowing His goodness, His care and provision for me, His wonderful ways. He will revive me! He is with me. I am NOT alone. Jesus loves me this I know. And I know it ONLY because I have chosen truth, my being truthful, being real with Him. Being real leads to knowing Him.

Let's be real.\o/

Interesting post.

My understanding is that the lowly is the humble. And the haughty are the proud.

The ones who put on they're "chuch faces" and aren't real would fall more in line with liers to me, but of course also could also be proud.

We each know our own hearts, and know why we could never be worthy of God's love. So yes, let's be real and let's be loving.

Just to continue the conversation. . .

How would a liar differ from a proud person? To be proud don't you have to be believing lies?

I could be a liar and still have very low self-esteem, not be a proud person at all. Just lie for whatever reason. However to turn it around, a proud person is lying to themselfs for none of us should be proud. None of us is worthy of God's goodness.

It depends upon how you define 'proud'. If you define it (pride) as having an inordinate (excessive) self preoccupation, then both those with low self esteem and excessively high self esteem are proud. But that is a topic in itself.

But I agree that to be proud (on either end of the continum), you are believing lies rather than the truth, what God says about you.

Interesting thoughts. . .

But God regards the lowly. That is what is important to remember. And the lowly are truth speakers as well as truth seekers.

I think the prideful are depressed. The egotistical person is one who usually portrays a great confidence in themselves but in reality hates himself enough to try and cover up all his shortcomings with great pride.

The humble in Christ put Jesus first and them second. That is what is blessed by God. The selfish put themselves first.

I certainly agree that some of the prideful are depressed, SonInMe1. Others are just believing lies---and that should be depressing if it is not. Anyway, yes, you are right, it comes down to denying self, putting the Lord first. It is such a hard thing. And few understand what it really entails. Myself included. But I certainly want to and He will accomplish His will in me and all those who are His. That's a big HALLELUJAH! Bless you, bro!
