I dont know if this is the right place to post this or not.. I live in North Alabama, and I was just wondering if there are as many plant closings and layoffs in other parts of the country as there are here right now? I manage a small used car lot and it has really hurt business.. My Mom has worked for the same company for 30 years. They are closing in January. We keep hearing rumors of many different car dealerships shutting the doors here pretty soon. I was just wondering if thats the case else where?

Although I don't work in the auto industry we've had a 1 day a week shut down since the beginning of Nov. and we are laid off Thanksgiving day week(2 days paid holiday). We were just told that we'd also be laid off for Christmas week(again 2 days paid holiday). This isn't the first time we've had lay-offs in the 15 years that I've been there so at this point it doesn't really alarm me. We make cooling towers and such.

Yes, that is why my state is number in the top 6 of foreclosures.

Absolutely. I work for a bank in New York. Already, perhaps 10-15% of the finance jobs have left the city. I've survived four rounds of layoffs and a capitulation and/or bankruptcy, yet still manage to have my job. About half a mile away, Citigroup has just announced that they are cutting 50,000 of their 300,000-or-so work force.
Having been through some of what you might be worried about, it must be scary right now. There's two things you need to do:
1.) Trust God. Go to Him with your concerns, know that his eye is on the sparrow and his eye is also on you.
2.) Start saving money and paying down debt. It's likely that this is how God will help resolve some of your worries.

Not that I'm aware of. Massachusetts' economy is built on hi-tech firms rather than manufacturing. We've managed to miss the brunt of the housing and economic crises.

Right now in West central Minnesota there are a whole lot of people out of work as one of the nations top boat manufacturers will likely be closing their doors soon. My father had worked there for 40 years, just 7 months shy of 63 years old and retirement. My mother who has been there 10 years is still working, but not for long according to all expectations. The company isn't expected to be even viable after the first of the year. The economy tanks - nobody buys boats.
Around here there have been several companies that have laid off workers and have closed, the biggest laying off at least 300 employees. Thankfully GM got blessed again saving at least a 1000 people their jobs for the time being.
Hubby missed the second round of layoffs, but it seems cyclical around here and at his plant, we get spared through the winter but when those voluntary layoffers return in May, we might have a few months without work again. We had our turn with the layoff last May through early July.

I've survived three rounds of layoffs with my company. Revenues are the worst in company history and we will probably go on a shortened work week after the first of the year. God had kept me throughout my life and I trust Him with whatever the future brings. "May God bless us everyone"

I live in a small town in INdiana. Just this month they have closed two factories. ONe was a factory that made travel camping trailors. I am afraid our little town is slowly dying. We have always been a factory town.

I survived several layoffs in the Sony manufacturing plant in southeast Alabama, where I'd worked for 24.5 years. But in early 2006, my job was eliminated. Last week, they announced yet another round of layoffs and two 2-week shutdowns during the next few months where employees will either use accumulated vacation or stay home without pay. The plant once employed around 1400 but had only about 400 two years ago when I left.

I'm in Indiana too, LeAnn. The travel trailer industry was one that I was thinking about.
But in tough economic times - luxuries like boats and RV's are amongst the first to go. Sad but true.

Where I live, unemployment is still in the 1 to 2% area.

There have been quite a few here in Michigan for several years, some people have moved out of state. However there are some jobs they cannot find people for.
Its just a shift in the type of jobs that are available.

Well, again I opened the paper this morning and another factory is closing. They make brakes for all kinds of vehicles. And with the auto industry as it is. This is the third factory since Nov. that closed. My community is hurting bad. I admit to being scared. My husband is only working temporary right now. And he could lose his job just as easily. I'm afraid that my little job at Walmart is just not going to help. Please pray for us and our community. I live in Indiana.

There have been some plant closings here in South Carolina. I believe that we are one of the highest in unemployment in the nation.

You know, if I were only looking at the bottom line, and business was slow and I had a number of employees, and I further knew that the new President had promised significant tax breaks for creating jobs in America, I would lay off as much off my workforce as possible, and then hire back as many as possible in newly created positions after such a tax break was forthcoming.

I live in SW Ohio and jobs are dropping like flies around here. This whole area is very dependant on (ahem!) how well GM is doing. Two major GM suppliers are all but completely shut down and a major one is slated to be closed soon - not to mention all the businesses that depend on those. (mom-pop stores, vendors, sub-contractors etc) DHL in Wilmington is in a shutdown/take over mode. And all this is just the beginning.
This is not the place to be "looking for a job" and, while my job has nothing to do with GM, I work seasonally and I'll be laid-off just before Christmas.

In Pryor, Oklahoma the Gatorade Plant is laying off.
They haven't been there all that long.
But, on the other hand, there are a few companies hiring.
The plant I worked for in Arkansas is rumored to shut down
the first of next year. They have plants all over the world,
so the reason is beyond me. I know it boils down to money.

Senator Tom Coburn (R. Okla.) In 2007 GM sold 9.37 cars worldwide. Toyota that same year sold 9.37 million cars worldwide. GM lost 38.7 billion (-4055 per car) Toyota made 17.7 billion (+1874 per car). Therein lies the problem.'' Why?
It might be interesting to do a overall price comparison between the cost of foreign made auto parts compared to the price of America made auto parts. What are general price differences between the same parts made in different countries?

I know they are moving out of state....MANY people from Michigan are coming here! (i see michigan license plates during my commute everyday).....I moved here in 1996, and it was the best move i ever made.....
it's great living in a state and city that does NOT repel business and jobs.....here, Iam not surrounded by people who are resentful towards ANYONE who is successful in what they do.....
There aren't many people around here who, after telling them what I do for a living, will tell me, "You need to get a "REAL" job" and, of course, "You've probably never worked a day in your life!"....
Michigan's environment overall was just too "toxic" for me....so much negativity and resentment it was unbearable....

"Big 3" "american made" cars have plenty of foreign parts in them, as well. GM sources parts from their factories and suppliers all over the world.....one day axles may be shipped in from Germany.....next month, those very same axles may have come from somewhere else....all the same, though.....exact same parts....

Yes I agree with that,it is has been a very negative environment, but most people don't want to move.
The prob is my family is extremely close, a few of use will consider moving but their spouses wont. Or their house won't sell.
But if I had to move someday, I would consider Texas.
(but I wanna live somewhere warm! Where is the warm part of Texas? I want Arizona like weather. LOL)

where do you live in Michigan? I grew up in the Pontiac area....my dad worked for GM's Pontiac Motor Division his entire "career" (1963-1991)...
Warm part of Texas? well, I live in Dallas (North Texas), and while it DOES get cold occasionally (like today...the high temp is "only" 56 today)...the temp this morning was 26 or so....(we live in a more "urban" area of town, so it didn't get quite as cold where we live, as it did in the outlying areas)....but, cold snaps such as this come around a few times a year, but, other wise, you can count on winter temps being in the 40s and 50s. It's the summer when you've gotta watch it...with temps routinely above 10....
If you're still working and in need of a job, Dallas-Fort Worth is THE PLACE to be if you're in Texas...or Houston (depending on what you do for a living)......if not, and you just want to move here....then, you've got many other options (Texas Hill Country, East Texas in and around Tyler, Palestine, and Nacogdoches....or, in "the Valley" around brownsville.....(not really recommended....alot of issues around the border lately)......I do hear that the rural areas immediately west of houston (Fulshear) are very nice, too.....
EDITED: in the summer, temps are routinely above 100.....not 10....hee hee hee...

I live in the Novi-Wixom area close to the Ford Wixom plant (now closed)
That area is not doing to bad economically, as some of the residents are more well off financially ..I work in Ann Arbor and since its a college town it isn't doing too bad either.
Warren and Dearborn are hit pretty hard with foreclosures and some other suburbs.
I work in IT but plan on going into health care, depending on how I can start the classes and work full time.

healthcare would be great....since you have ann arbor right there.....a great place for most anyone in the healthcare field! (at least, one would THINK so!)
i was a "regular customer" at U of M's Mott children's hospital when I was in high school and through college (went to Northwood Univ. in midland, and then art school in Cincinnati)...
ended up getting a pacemaker put in at Mott.... just a week before the start of my freshman year of college at Northwood....
I have relatives all the way through your area....and Milford, Pontiac, Waterford, white lake twp., Lake Orion....and,I know where you live, I know you'd know EXACTLY where i grew up: CLARKSTON!
A few years ago, we had our 20 year class reunion....as a part of that, a special website was set up for people to register on, and to everyone where they were, what they were doing and all. Through that, 3 people I went to high school with...we all "found each other" living here in the Dallas area....one lives not more than 10 minutes from me!....and, we know that there MUST be more here.....as a matter of fact, we all got together just this past weekend....
