Anyone have one? I was given a huge amount of math books and would like to laminate the pages so I can use them for more than just one kid.
Before I get one, I wanted to hear from any hs'ers that have one.
What kind?
Likes?
Dislikes?
Worth the $$?
Thanks
Sandy

I don't have a laminator, but I have my eldest copy the problems into a notebook and not use the book. That is what we used to do in school. However, I didn't start that until she was in eighth grade.

I think the laminating sheets would be a lot more expensive than buying a new workbook.

I have a laminator--just bought it. Brand is "Scotch" like the tape. I like it fine. I bought it because I'm teaching and I wanted a way to keep the handouts for tests that have all the constants on them neat so I don't need to recopy them for every test and every semester. Also plan to use it to laminate my son's art projects.

Not sure it would be worth it for notebook pages unless you are really talking about a LOT of children using them.

I don't have a laminator. I have done 2 things in place of getting things laminated. I have used clear contact paper, you just put it on both sides & cut out around the page or object. It doesn't work as well as heat lamination, but it does work. I've also taken a book apart & put it in page protectors in a 3 ring binder. Don't know if either of these things would work for what you want or not. I even had the kids use a wet or dry erase marker on the page protectors & we could clean them off afterward & use it again.

If you have a food saver you might be able to use that, just use the seal function.

Do you have a scanner, I'd just scan what you needed and print off as many copies. You could try going to kinkos but they don't always let you copy copyrighted material.

Nor should we, as Christians, want to defraud the people who sell copyrighted material. But anyway...

I don't have a laminator, but did use one the school has while working on VBS stuff this year. It was pretty cool.

My concern would be...if the laminating sheets are expensive (I don't know...I've never bought them), will you feel stuck using the curriculum for other kids just because you have now laminated them? As you know, not every method or curriculum is best for every kid, and even with the 4 you already have, you're likely to find that you've got at least 2 different learning styles, KWIM?

But then, I am lazy and like new books, so I'd rather just buy a new workbook.

hmmm.
The only reason I wanted to laminate is because these are HUGE public school math books. The 1st grade work book is almost 550 pages.
I was given math books all the way up to 5th grade! I thought that investing in a laminator would be a practical way to extend the life of these books.
We are talking hundreds of dollars worth of material here. Even if I didn't use it for all my kids, it would be nice to have as alternate work, or review work, or even busy work.
I'm not doing anything with it right yet, since I got all this after I bought math for this year already.
I've got time to think on it for sure
Sandy

I'm not a parent, but I have a laminator. Had it for years. Think it's a Smith-Corona (sp) and it required 'carriers' to take the laminated pages through. I lost them in a move (together with the laminating paper I had) and couldn't find anywhere that sold them so tried some lightweight card and pretty cheap laminating paper and it seems to work just fine.

I'm in the process of copying recipes up and printing/laminating them to keep them clean. I've made all sorts of things with it though ~ to do lists, bookmarks, contents sheets (for fridge, freezer and cupboards), photos, leaves and dried flowers (to decorate a scrapbook) etc.

I wouldn't hesitate to get another one once this one dies (it's over 10 years old).

I would advise against laminating. You can buy used text books fairly low cost from many outlets. textbooks are typically updated every few years. Laminating the pages is going to cost LOTS more than simply buying copies of the books.

Laminating lots of pages can get expensive really quick. Even when I was teaching in a public school they didn't like us to use the laminator too much because of the cost. If you figure in the time to take the books apart, laminate individual pages, then store them effectively (hole punched in binders?), it would be a huge undertaking.
If you want to avoid taking the books apart (storing that much paper can be a pain, even in binders), get a few sheets of transparency film (this link is a bit $$, but you can get packs of 5 or so sheets fairly cheaply at office type stores). Paper clip the transparency to the page in the book you want your child to work on, and have him/he use a dry erase (or overhead) maker to write in the answers. Check it, then wipe the page clean.
If you have a flat bed scanner you can lay the book down and scan/copy one page at a time when you want them to work on something.
You could have your kids just write numbered answers in a notebook (as an alternative to copying out each problem).

I love the transparency idea.

I used to work at a place that used page protectors and grease (china) pencils. They have to be smooth, not matte, but we would slide the pages in, write the changing info with the grease pencil and then erase with a papertowel.

This may help with math because you can do the same page again, just wipe it clean and start over. A dry erase pen should work and have a finer line.

The pages are designed to put in a 3-hole binder.

I used them with my little ones when they were little. I'd design a sheet and slip it in the pages and they would trace the letters. I could carry the pages I wanted to when we went out.

I have a laminator. It has become one of our best friends. Mine is from a company called "Purple Cow". Their customer service is outstanding. Very friendly and helpful people.

I use mine for cursive writing charts, different lists, papers that get used over and over, arts and crafts, science notebooks, leaf collections, etc. It is great for making things like passports as you go from country to country; homemade board games, attitude charts, chore charts, etc.

I could go on and on. Needless to say...I love my laminator.
Anymore, they are not very expensive and readily available at places like Michael's or Hobby Lobby - sometimes there are specials even when you go to the company's websites.
