OK. In hopes that someone comes in and reads this, I'm gonna post a question before I forget.

How do you knit LONG pieces????? The needle is only 8 in long.

I knitted for a while, but I prefer crocheting. You go stitch by stitch, can stop at any time, and don't have to limit yourself to the length of the needle!

I believe what you want is a circular knitting needle.

I can knit but it has been a long time since I knitted anything. I really like to crochet--it seems to go faster for me. And I collect crochet patterns. Not sure why--I haven't used most of the patterns--but I like looking at them Is that weird? I make mostly afghans and baby things.

What do you knit/crochet? And do you knit/crochet for yourself or for gifts?

I've been collecting patterns too. I want to make a sweater next ... something I can wear at work when I'm cold.

I knit mostly scarves, cause I'm just learning.

I have crocheted several scarves and afghans. I made a little bag once too.

I try to give everything away. I don't like to keep my projects around. I need to go buy one more skein of yarn for an old afghan I'm finishing up, and I'm trying to knit a scarf real quick to get rid of some novelty yarn.

I think I'll go buy some yarn for the sweater I want to make this weekend and get started on that. It will be my first attempt at something where teh guage actually matters.

The only things I've crocheted so far are two blankets for two of my younger siblings. One of them is big enough to cover me, and all one piece - in single crochet, done with a fairly small needle. It's not perfect, but I'm proud of it - it took FOREVER to finish, and I didn't give up!!

I have a baby blanket in progress, which will be the first pattern I've done.

You will never have a perfect project--but every time you complete something it will be better then the last--and be proud of every piece it is an accomplishment.

I also find that when I crochet it is a great time with the Lord. A good time to meditate and pray and listen to the Spirit.

I remember my first full pattern. I started and stopped several different patterns, but my first full one was something I was very proud of. It was a little crochet bag. It only took 1 skein of yarn and was done in a few hours. I wonder if i still have it. Hmmmmmm

I love to crochet, but don't see any patterns that seem practical to me. I may just start giving my things to goodwill or yard sales or something.

I've made 2 baby afghans ... one for my nephew and one for a co-workers son. I bought so much yarn for my nephew, that I had enough leftover to do another one.

I've made an afghan in SF Giant's colors, and one in Denver Bronco Colors. I've made others just to make.

Those are all my projects. I thought I had more of my afghans on there, but apparantly not. Maybe I'll go take more photos of what I have and upload them. I am one time through the pattern away from being done with another afghan.

How do you knit LONG pieces????? The needle is only 8 in long.

When I knitted a blanket for my dogs I bought super ginormous needles and squished all the stitches together to make it longer than the needle.

They also have circular needles you can buy that have the needles on the end and a long piece of flexible tubing in the middle so you can knit long things.

I read about circular needles last night. I'm still not clear on how to get 150 stitches casted on though. But, as my mom said, "I'm a do-er." I have to do it to understand it.

It'll be awhile before I do something substantial knit-wise. I'm still in the practicing phase.

Wow, what patience and perseverance!!!

I knit for more or less instant gratification. I love to do socks, gloves and things like that, also because I like to buy hand-dyed yarns, which come in small amounts, just right for small projects. Besides, they're so portable, I can just whip them out in any waiting room or on the bus or train. I get lots of knitting done in front of the telly, too. When it gets cold in autumn I have a pre-Christmas sale of my stuff and get myself some extra dosh .

Yes, circular needles are the way to go if you want to cast on lots of stitches. There are long, straight needles as well, but a flexible circular is easier on your wrists, because as the the knitting gets longer and heavier it can follow gravity and lie in your lap.

A great resource for knitting, with lots and lots of tips and demonstration videos for all stitches:

It sat in a box for a LONG time, so it wasn't 2 years straight crocheting.

I am so happy I found this thread!!

My grandmother was visiting this past weekend and she was working on an afghan. It inspired me so I have started my first afghan. It is super basic double stich. No patterns or anything. I'm not very far, but looking forward to seeing the end result.

Hi Nicole.

We seem to be in all the same places today!

How big are you going to make it?

It's 200 links wide. Not sure how long (rows) to make it.

I have a friend who just had a baby Monday--I am going to crochet him a sweater he can wear when he is about 6 months old--which is about when it will be cold enough here to wear a sweater

Lapghan? How big is that? The only thing I have ever known (besides baby size) is one an adult can wrap up in. I know that doesn't explain much.

Lapghan ... my own made up word. An afghan that basically covers your lap.

That's what my first one was because I got bored of it and didn't want to make it big enough to be a full afghan.

A while back, I went crazy buying some 'feathers' yarn to make scarves. I did make a lot of scarves. Gave some away. Sold some. I still have a lot of the yarn left over though. I haven't got very far yet as my hands have been too painful and swollen, but I've started knitting more scarves to give away to people who need them. It's pretty cold here at the moment, (our winter), but what I don't get done before next winter, which will be most of it, I'll stockpile until then, and then they can be given away. I'd rather see it being put to use, rather than just sitting there.

I'm knitting dishcloths. I gave one to my daughter and she loved it and wants a set for Christmas. I have trouble following patterns and doing some of the stitches. So I decided to knit an original dishcloth. I drew a picture of different sizes squares and rectangles. I colored the purls shapes purple, the knit shapes pink and am knitting from it. Its going great and much easier than a row by row pattern.

I love dishcloths out of peaches and cream yarn.

I just crocheted a baby hat and booties for a friends grandchild. I need to make a blanket for my soon to be grandchild. Maybe I'll finish it by the time he graduates from high school.
