Any other parents out there like me, who has a high school senior applying to colleges? Are you helping your child with the application process, or making them do it by themselves?

I have two sons who are in college now. DS1 will finish his bachelors degree in the Spring of next year and DS2 is a freshman. We did not help them at all with their college application process. We figured if they were ready to live on their own and be responsible for their own education then applying without our help was a great place to start. We knew parents who did everything for their kids from obtaining applications to filling them out. Those kids did not do well once they got to college. We are strong believers in letting our kids make their own decisions and own their decisions and any consequences. It has worked well for us.

I have one in college and one who already graduated. They both did most of the work with some guidance from us when they asked. There were issues they wanted to discuss with us and we were happy to help.

I think it's good to have your child involved in the entire application process, if not doing it themselves. It kind of impresses on them that college is a bigger deal, something to be worked for that has value.

Definitely have the child involved in the application process, if not initiating it themselves!
(My DD#1 is a freshman in college...she delayed going to college for a year to finish up an LPN training program).

Our oldest just started her first year in college this Fall and although her dad was there to help her when she needed the help, she filled out the application and talked with her guidance counselor at school about the things she needed to know.
Once they are in college they have to do everything themselves anyway so it is best they learn how to before they get there.

kohls356, that's just what I was thinking about...my DD#1 is today dealing with missing HS transcripts that are holding up her second semester registration. I can help her fact-find from my end, and contact the high school to re-send, but she's the one that's got to do the legwork on her campus to get things straightened out.
The weekend we took her to school, I took her to WalMart and helped her get her prescriptions set up. There are things like that which she was so hesitant to do on her own, now she just goes in and doesn't give it a second thought. Sometimes we've got to gently nudge the little bird out of the nest.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I haven't been on this thread in a few weeks. I have helped my son with the applications (online). We are getting ready to send them out in the next few weeks. We attended 4 college open houses and tours (our last one was earlier today). This whole applying to college thing is very time consuming and expensive. DS has an interview appointment on Friday with a college that is about 10 minutes from our house. They have a program that is called "instant decision". You submit your application and all at your appointment. You attend "meet and greet" and have a tour. At the end of the session you will be accepted or not accepted and also offered a scholarship if applicable. It is also not a binding contract like the early decision is, and you have until May to decide. You have to meet their qualifications to even apply for this option, which is based on SAT scores, class rank, and GPA. DS also qualifies for a scholarship that would be for free tuition and fees for 4 years. He would live at home if he attended this school. I'll keep you all posted on how he makes out on Friday.

Ds2 is attending a culinary arts school here in town and is living at home this first term. He is my pretty independent kid so he is itching to get a place of his own. We will see what he comes up with.

Hi everyone! DS had his appointment on Friday at the state college that is about 10 minutes from our house. He was accepted AND offered an academic scholarship of free tuition and fees for 4 years. We only need to pay for books. DS is almost positive he is going to accept this scholarship and live at home. He is very excited, we are very proud of him and relieved as well. That saves us about $20,000 a year for 4 years. The meeting we attended was well organized and very personable. When you check-in and turn in your package, you were assigned to table. It was assigned by intended major. They had professors from the different programs talk to the students one-on-one. DS had tons of questions that were answered. We also were given a free buffet lunch. It was very nice.
