So how old were people when we started wearing earrings? (& tell us about it.)

I got my ears pierced when I was 16. My best friend took me to get them done. I got second piercings in the ears done for my eighteenth birthday, but later let them close up because they just weren't doing too well. I always wear earrings. I spent one night away from home unexpectedly, and took out my earrings at 2am because they were of the dangly variety. When I woke up at 9am and went to put them in, I had a bit of trouble because they'd already started healing. This was after having them pierced for three years. So I always wear studs..and that's usually what I wear.

I think I had some clip-ons (ouch) when I was twelve, but I am not real sure. My mother was strenuously opposed to ear-piercing, due to her belief that if you got your ears pierced they would get infected and your ear lobes would fall off. (She believed this until she was about 60, and got her own ears pierced.) But I really *really* wanted my ears pierced, and she was unswayed by my whining and begging and showing her my friends who had pierced ears and still had their ear lobes. So I tricked her. When I was thirteen, I found some small cameos that you stuck on with double-sided tape. I stuck them on and made a point of tossing my hair over my shoulder and exposing the cameo to my mother. It took two weeks before she noticed it, and let me tell you, she blew one fine hissy fit that I had defied and disobeyed her. When she calmed down a bit and her normal color started to return, I calmly peeled off the cameos and laid them on the table so she could see they were not pierced. So she said "Oh, come on," and we got in the car and she bought me a set of those self-piercers--little gold rings that you wear for a couple of weeks and they bore a hole in your ear lobe. I don't know if in my excitement I opened them too wide, or whether the were just useless, but two weeks later my ear lobes were still intact. So, with the typical "hole in the brain" reasoning of a thirteen-year-old, I allowed my fourteen-year-old cousin (who was older and therefore wiser about such things) to poke real holes in my ears with a sewing machine needle. I do not know if it hurt or not, as I fainted early in the procedure. I did not tell my mother how my ears *really* got pierced until I was around forty.

I was about 10. My mother took me somewhere to get it done. It didn't hurt, and I healed well, and haven't had any problems. When I was in college a friend and I went together and paid for an extra pair of holes--one for her and one for me, as a friendship thing. I let that close up in the next couple years.

Ps103: LOL, that doesn't surprise me, more mature ladies often get it done after not having it for decades, or else have second holes put in after having only one set for decades. Your post made me smile, though. quote:

The reason she got her ears pierced was that my father gave her a pair of diamond earrings that were for pierced ears Not because he wanted her to pierce her ears--he was blissfully unaware that people poked holes in their ears (or maybe he thought we came that way ). He thought earrings were earrings, and that the diamond ones were especially pretty. He had given her pierced earrings before, and she had just thanked him and not embarrassed him by telling him she couldn't wear them. Eventually, they would end up in my ears, and since my father (usually) had good taste in jewelry, I was pretty happy with the arrangement. I had my eye on those diamonds, too . Alas, the diamonds were sufficient to overcome her fear of ear lobe loss, and she went to Claire's and did the deed--quickly and painlessly. She remained concious throughout--I was proud of her, because I was fully expecting a call from the store for me to come and collect her once she came to .

Ps103: So she managed to overcome her inhibitions? and get needled at her age. Worth it I guess. Some over 50s and 60s have even gotten doubles done; don't be surprised if she likes that as well. quote:
