How much would you pay for handcrafted Christmas cards? - 9/22/2008 4:31:38 PM

I've about got the stuff ready to open up my etsy.com shop (selling unique wall hangings), and I had the idea the other day that I could also do Christmas cards for sale. I hardly ever send out Christmas cards, because I can't stand the generic "happy holidays" ones which are about all you can find in stores anymore. So something like this would be something I would personally like to have available, maybe others would too.

These cards would be made on card stock and would be single fold cards with envelopes. They would have a good quality picture on the front, sealed over with a matte finish, and a Christmas themed scripture inside.

I would probably sell them in packages of 10 and 25.

So, is this a product you would personally be interested in (so I can get an idea of how much interest there would be, to see if it's worth producing) and if so, how much would you reasonably be willing to pay per card?

Thanks for any input!

Nothing, I would make my own

Really though, I would probably be willing to pay whatever was reasonable. $12 for a pack of 10?

How much do they cost you to make?

It depends on what the cards look like. If I liked the pictures and the scriptures I would pay about $2-$3/card if I bought them alone. If they were even nicer than I expected I would pay up to $4.50/ card. If the packages of 10 cost between $15-20 I would buy them in 10's. But each card would have to be different so I could use them for a couple of years at least. I don't like packages that have all the same card in them because I always end up not using the rest of them because I can never remember who I sent them to the previous year.

I think it would depend on how much it cost you to make them. You don't want to lose money. I would buy them if they were reasonable and I liked the picture/scripture.

They're not something I've ever been in the market for, but I'd recommend taking a look at the current market and seeing what the going rate is. Handmade cards can be quite pricey, and reasonably so since they can take a very long time to make.

Research your target market, figure up your costs/overhead/profit margin, and make sure you pay yourself an adequate amount for your time.

Thanks for the input so far!

Cost to make - that would really depend on how many of each design I can sell. I'd have to buy the rights to each picture I use (the only appropriate pictures we have taken ourselves would be snowy trees, and I can't think of a really good Scripture to go with that LOL) which costs between $35 and $40 per picture (that gives me the rights to print/use the picture up to 10,000 times). So if I sold 50 of a design, that's .80 per card just for the picture rights. But 500 sales would mean .08 per card - quite a difference. Then supplies on top of that, I don't think would be too much. I haven't checked many places for card stock and envelopes yet, but the ones I have checked is around $10 for a package of 50 cards + 50 envies. So that's .20 each. I would have the pictures printed at Kinko's like I did for my wall hangings, which if it's the same price for several small pics per page as it is for one pic on a page, is .59 per page. I would print the text here on my printer, and I already have the sealant to glue/seal the pics on the card.

Hmmm, good point. I don't think I'd be able to do boxes with every card different, because as I pointed out I have to pay for the rights to the photos themselves. Would a box of twelve cards, with three different designs (four cards of each design), be something you could use? That wouldn't be too hard for me to do.

The thought occured to me yesterday, I wonder if these would make a good fundraiser for church youth groups? I don't think I'd be able to go that far this year, because I don't have a whole lot of time left to work on them, but I could reasonably have several hundred made and ready by next fall. I could just charge the church a little bit more than it cost me to produce them, then the youth group could sell them at a higher price and keep the profit. I wouldn't make as much per card, but would have the potential for selling much higher numbers.

BTW, I have my first wall hangings for sale listed at my etsy shop. Does anyone know if it's ok to post a link here, or do I need special permission to do so?

Thanks ladies! I really appreciate the input.

I think you can put it in your signature. Or if someone asks, then you can put it in a post I think?

So, what is it? I want to see. Maybe I'll heart you.

I meant to go look yours up too, 2bellesandabead, right? Somebody on another board suggested that I put more in my profile description, I wanted to get some ideas from shops already set up.

That's our business name and our regular website, but our Etsy shop is different. I set that up before really starting the business, and you can't change your name later on.

I hearted you. Your wall hangings are neat. I've never seen anything quite like that before.

I remembered after I went and searched for your shop that the name there was slightly different, I found it though and "hearted" you. You have such pretty stuff, I wish I wore jewelry enough to do it justice. I used to love to collect unusual earrings.

Thanks for the compliment! Other than the hangings I've done and one my sister did many years ago (which is where I got the idea), I've never seen any quite like them either. I hope that works to my favor.

what about the pics you already have on your plaques? Do you have the rights to those? If so then maybe you can make inspirational cards with those and not limit yourself to just holiday cards

I agree. If you have cards that aren't Christmassy cards, you could use them for encouragement cards and other things.

Oooh, that's an idea! I could make 'Thinking of You' and 'Get Well Soon' type cards. The hangings I've made so far (with the exception of one that I made as a wedding gift, it's not listed on my site) were all made with photos that hubby took, so I can use them all day long and twice on Sundays. I bet the flower ones would make really pretty cards, I have a ton of flower pics that I haven't used yet in addition to the ones I've made hangings with.

Thanks for the ideas and input!!

Thanks Nicole! My sister's sunroom has walls that are just about that exact color of yellow, I'm thinking of giving her one of the daisy hangings for Christmas.
