I had the intention of incorporating some type of school into a summer break, but haven't had much success in finding ways to make it fun. Summer camps aren't really an option for us right now, due to lack of $$$. I feel like I really need to keep those little brains working. I also want to focus on strengthening math skills in our soon-to-be 5th grader.

We were going to do some, but have not ordered our curriculum for next year yet. I could have continued with the stuff we had, but with the move, and lots of trips, we have taken a break. I don't plan to start until end of August or start of September.

We do interest led education all year long. I only use curriculum for math, and we tend to hit it hard when the weather's not conducive to being outside, and pretty much ignore it when we can get out. Otherwise, they follow their interests and are always learning something. The types of activities change seasonally, but that's about it.

We school straight through summer since it is usually too hot in Texas to be outside anyway. We take our big time off in the fall for vacation and holidays. We also tend to take off when Dad is off for the day so we need the summer days to make up a full years worth.

Find some math links from the Fake Homeschoolers thread and give them 15-20 minutes a day online?

We used to teach through the summer in Florida because it is so HOT in the summer, and beach weather in the winter. Plus there were no kids around because pretty much everyone else on our street was retired.

Now we live farther north, and summers are spent hanging out with friends at at the pool for the most part.

That makes sense.

I kind of like the idea of taking the holidays off from regular curriculum to focus on other areas of learning that are incorporated into the holidays. That's a pretty busy time of year anyways. I'm sure there's a whole other thread for that though.

As we are only just starting our hs... we did do some preliminary stuff this summer. Main reason to convince DH that this was going to work.
We have played some math games, checked out Time4Learning, which we will use as our main curriculum, memorized "The Jabborwock" - drawn pictures of the Jabborwock and the Vorpal Sword, and worked on typing.
Dad is suitably impressed.
yeah.
one successful year and maybe both boys can hs. And we can take cool vacations at odd times!

I have to take summers off for my own sanity.

Well said, well said!! Hadn't thought about it that way, but I did tell DD that we were taking a break this summer, even though she wanted to do school all the way through.

We have done some things this summer. Things that I don't want to occupy our time with when we have a full load of school to do (Sex Ed.). We have also done Math and History spuratically when the kids "have nothing to do".
Otherwise, we've mostly been on a break. P. School starts in August here, so we will be starting soon ourselves. We did go into June with our school because we had moved in October and I wanted to have the days in that the law requires. That has made Summer feel shorter and it has gone by really fast!

We started back to school on July 14. We'd had almost 2 months off. Since I'm a real scheduled person and dd does better with set schedules we have set tenative schedules for our 180 day school year. We'll end May 15. Like others have said its too hot to enjoy being outside much of the time so its easier to go through the hottest months. She's already been to camp too.

We have our schedule set to have weeks or near weeks off throughout the year. We'll have several breaks in every season. Fridays are more interest driven than math and subjects she doesn't care for.

We do year round...

9 weeks on, 3 weeks off. It works great for us. We modify it at times. Here's an example of the calendar we use:
http://www.wcpss.net/Calendars/2008-09/08-09-year-round.pdf

I find that doing school in the summer is fine with us. It's so darn hot that you can't go outside... so you might as well do school. LOL We take off more in the cool weather.

Hope that helps! :o)

We do school year round with random breaks throughout the year. Or we take a trip and do hidden schooling-- geography, history, social studies (went to New York City--study of "foreign" culture)

LOL..."Foreign" culture...that's funny. I suppose Vegas would be some "foreign" culture too.

A while back one September I decided to use a 180-box check-off form to track school days. After a bit I realized that we learn something about 350 days/year. So I gave up on the form.

We school year-round, taking about a month off for Christmas and other breaks as needed (like when we moved a year ago). We also tend to school all week long, but not every subject every day. We are very relaxed schoolers.
