The Thompson Chain Reference Study Bible, NKJV
Signature Series Edition, Black, Calfskin Leather

I want a bible that will last me till I die and I was wondering if anyone owns or have seen one of these bibles. I want to be sure its the one I want before I go and spend $150-$200 on this bible. I am not too familier with the Thompson Chain-Reference system I have heard good things about it but was just curious to hear from you guys.

I have one but I didn't pay any 150 -200 for it!

Thompson Bibles on Amazon

I like it very much. I have the hard cover and it didn't take long to fall apart. I'm going to get the leather one - but I can't see spending over $100 for one.

I love my Thompson's Chain. Certainly, it's not an exhaustive resource, but it's a pretty good one.

As for the construction, the very best Bibles to buy are those that are "genuine leather" and not "bonded leather" or "imitation leather" or "leather look." It's also important to make sure the binding is sewn and not glued. So if you'll buy "genuine leather" with a "sewn binding," it will last a long, long time.

The one I was looking at buying had Genuine Calfskin leather(which is the best), and a special sown binding, and better paper that doesn't have the ghosting affect (where you can see the words on the other side). That is why it cost so much, the whole bible has a lifetime guarantee.

My husband has a Thompson Chain Reference--it's a good study/reference Bible.

The Thompson Chain is my favorite Bible. It's definitely not an "all in one" but it's pretty good. I do wish it had some type of "lexicon" built into it but it doesn't.
I paid $70 for a bonded leather one about a year ago. I decided I wanted the leather one so I started perusing ebay. I bought one two weeks ago, genuine leather NIV for $30 including shipping and it was like new.
If you're looking to save money, take your time and you'll find it on ebay. If money isn't an option, pony up the dough and go for it retail. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

We have a very loved, very well-used one. In fact, ours begins in the middle of the second chapter of Genesis. I have no clue how we got it.

I like it for the study material in the back, but don't use it for my day to day bible.

It was the first study Bible I bought after I became a believer. I liked it at the time, but it quickly became inadequate for me. I've since gone on to others.

I love the Thompson Chain. The pages are sewn in, not just glued. Ever left a glued page Bible in your car in the summer, lol?

I like that it is a reference, not a devotional or study Bible. I love it. I have the genuine leather, and have had it for years. Go with high quality leather, not the bonded stuff. Really keeps looking good through the years.

I also love the Thompson Chain, as it's really focuses on using Scripture to interpret Scripture.
That said, I no longer use mine, as it's an older NASB. I'm disappointed that they never published it in the Updated NASB, or in the ESV for that matter.
One other caviat. Some of the reviews on Amazon allude to a supposed decline in quality in their Bibles made today vs. years ago. I don't have firsthand experience with this, so take it for what it's worth.

I have the bonded leather 1981 vintage TCR. Its a great bible, Ive worn it slick. the pages are still in, the back is broken the cover wants to come away from the text....but Ive preached
hundreds of sermons from it, taken it around the world, and use it often. I have others that have taken center stage now, but I have no complaints about my TCR

I, too, recommend the Thompson Chain Reference Bible. I received one as a gift in 1967 and I've used it extensively ever since. Mostly for reference, though, these days, since I've pretty much quit reading anything in the KJV.

I bought a KJV Thompson Chain when I was 14 and still have it. It was used extensively back then, but I use other study bibles now. Does anyone know if it has been updated since then?

I know I am responding late to this post, but I thought this was worth mentioning.I really like the Thompson Chain Reference Bible, but I would caution against getting it in the New American Standard translation, because I have had several of them , and the binding doesn't seem to hold up very well.If you are getting another translation, you should be ok.I really like the NASB translation, so I have had to go with the NASB Study Bible, instead.
