I just signed up today for the Triple Alert credit monitoring thing from Transunion. It pulls my credit report and scores from all 3 credit agencies (Transunion, Experian and Equifax.) Well, since March of this year I have paid $7.95/month with Equifax to receive alerts about my accounts and score (i.e., they will email me if a credit card balance decrease, my score increases, etc.) Well, my credit score just went up 2 points this week (yay!) according to my Equifax site. However, when I signed up for this Transunion thing, it said my Equifax score was FOURTY points lower than what the actual Equifax site was saying. How can that be? I feel like I might be getting ripped off for some reason. I wanted to go with Transunion and do the triple alert thing so I could keep track of all 3 places at once. However, I am a little disgruntled at the fact that they are saying my credit score is VERY low when Equifax is telling me differently. Any advice?

You actually have three different scores from each of the reporting agencies. You should pull all three and compare them to see if there is something on one that shouldn't be there or visa versa. Theoretically all your scores should be fairly close to each other, but sometimes one gets something wrong. Your post just reminded me that it's time to pull my reports again and take a look. I do it once a year. I gave up on trying to keep up with the score, they change the rule every time you think you've got it down.

I also know that the scores are slightly different for car dealerships versus mortgage lenders. That is, the basis of the calculations are slightly adjusted depending on the purpose of the score query.

Mortgage lenders compare all three scores and use the middle one, I believe. Car dealers and the like often use the highest score. Theoretically, all three scores should be close to each other, but as the OP's situations shows, that is not always the case.

AnualCreditReport.com That's the REAL free one. Federal law, you get one free report per year from each agency. Some states, like GA, have laws that you get 2 free reports per year from each agency. As for freezing your credit, you can also do that yourself. If you are a victim of ID fraud, the fees are waved. Otherwise, I believe it cost $10 per agency to apply a credit freeze.

Just double check, but I do not believe you get a score with the Federal report.

No, you do NOT get your score free anywhere that I know of. You do have to pay for that.
