Okay, I bought fresh asparagus for the first time. Never tried it before because the canned stuff is so gross, but it looked good sitting there in the produce section so I grabbed some. Now what do I do with it?

I enjoy them roasted or grilled - coat with oil and sprinkle on some salt and pepper, then roast or grill. Yum!

Oh yes, fresh is 1000 times better! You will probably love them from now on.

Roasted/grilled are really delicious!

Or, sometimes I add them to a skillet that's large enough for them to fit in lengthwise. After the water has come to a boil (maybe about 1/4 inch deep), toss the asparagus in and let them cook for 3-6 minutes - depending whether you want them fairly crisp (less time) or a little less crisp. They are good with a little butter and salt, or my all-time favorite: fresh hollandaise sauce. Yum!

I think asparagus is but I can tolerate it grilled, I definitely suggest marinating it in olive oil and some spices and then grilling it!!!

First, hold the asparagus in your hand and snap it. It will break where the tender part meets the woody part. Throw away the woody part. Grilled is nice. Sometimes I spray it with olive oil and put it on the Forman grill. Other times I put a little olive oil in a pan and saute the asparagus. Steamed is very good too. I've also eaten it raw with dip.

Asparagus cooks very fast. On the Forman in about 3 minutes. Sauteed in about 5 minutes. Steamed in about 5 minutes. Cook till they are bright green and tender crisp. Limp asparagus is yucky.

It does cook very fast, just as Laura said.

I like to saute it in a little olive oil and salt or roast in (in olive oil and salt) or grill it (after marinating in olive oil and salt). Steamed is fine as well.

The secret is not overcooking.

I always thought that I hated asparagus because all I'd ever been exposed to was the canned stuff. I had freshed grilled asparagus at a restaurant and discovered that I like the "real" stuff. It's really good sauted in a little butter & lemon juice; or as others have stated, with a little olive oil. I've had it with olive oil & fresh lemon, roasted in a convection oven, too, it was delicious.

(Definitely remove the woody ends, as Laura mentioned, before cooking.)

Cut the white ends off (if they aren't precut). Lay them out on a baking pan covered with aluminum foil. Drizzle generously with olive oil, salt, and sprinkle with slivered almonds. Put in the oven at about 350* until done- cooked through but not limp.
I can't WAIT for asparagus to be in season here!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shame on you Laura ~ they can go into a pot with other veg for stock!!

If you bake them or steam them, (my preferances), make sure that you have the stalk end at the outside of the dish and the 'flower' (can't think of what it's called) end in the middle to ensure more even cooking.

Had a recipe once where they were baked with breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese and probably a few other things, but I can't think of what.

I like sauteeing them in olive oil and garlic and S&P.

Well, since it's gonna rain for the next three days I guess it's either steamed or sauteed. Or break out my George Foreman. Thanks to everybody for the suggestions.

Absolutely!

You can also cut into 1-2" pieces on a diagonal cut and saute in butter until some of the bits start to carmelize a little on the outside. Very similar result to roasting.

Sometimes a bit easier than grilling and if you live in a desert climate it can keep the pieces from drying out as much (vs. grilling)

Not much desert here on the Jersey shore. But I like the caramelizing idea.
