We’re pretty sure then that when he offered up his wife Cindy, who has graced Vogue this year and other magazines as one of the country’s most beautiful women, to compete in the rally’s Miss Buffalo Chip contest, that well, he didn’t entirely get — as an ESPN writer suggests — that the contestants sometimes wind up topless, walk about in thongs (Shocking!) or are otherwise scantily clothed. (Oh! Debauchery!) ...“I told her with a little luck that she could be the only woman to serve as First Lady and Miss Buffalo Chip,” Mr. McCain told the crowd, as his wife waved to them...

If I 'pimped out" my wife for some topless beauty contest for some political advantage, I'd be writing this post from a hotel room wondering what I could do to salvage my marriage. 
I guess someone who has no qualms about mocking Christianity in his political ads has no difficulty ridiculing his wife in public either. 
How Christians can vote for this jocker is beyond me.

I think it's just another PR gaffe to add to the ones McCain (and Obama) have already stacked up this summer.

How Christians can vote for this jocker is beyond me.
I suspect he didn't know about this beauty contest and was simply trying to score points with his wife (by saying she is beautiful) and the locals (by ascribing importance to their contest). Trying to be everyman as it were.
I certainly don't think McCain is above criticism but this is a stretch. Especially with all the gaffes he has committed during the campaign.
Of course your post does resemble some of the anti-Obama posts (first the unimportant incident blown to absurd proportions, second the tying it in to the candidate's perceived lack of faith then the judgment upon any Christian who would vote for him) I've seen. The last part was an especially nice touch. So if you're intent was satire I say great job sir.

I would hope that a candidate with as much political experience as McCain would not make such a boneheaded, first timer mistake. Either someone on the McCain staff failed to do their research and preparation, or MCCain used the occaison to show that he and his wife have a sense of humor about themselves, and each other. A sense of humor that has been missing in our political proccess for far too long.

Oh lighten up folks, he was giving his wife a compliment by saying she was as pretty as any of those biker chicks.
I think it shows a little humanity in a candidate instead of all the "Packaging" we get with B. Hussein Obama.

yes most of us can agree it was not a biggie, but considering the OP's history; I think Evangel70 was just trying another tree hugging liberal jab at a really nice guy.

While I would agree that this was not much more than another McCain gaffe, it does make me wonder how he will handle, more serious issues as a President. One can overlook confusing country borders or who's fighting whom, or even forgeting the Chekoslavakia is no longer one country but don't we already have a comander in chief causing enough embarrassment for the U.S.? (enough to have several editions of "Bush-isms).
The next president needs a sharpness of mind and ability to think well and quickly on his feet the McCain simply doesn't possess. Can you imagine McCain having some political gaffe while meeting with and Iranian leader or a middle east embassador? What McCain may consider a "joke" may lead us into a nuclear (not NUCLULAR ) war.

Now RC, you know you would be the first to jump to conclusions had this happened to Obama. You'd be posting how Obama thought his wife was some sort of loose woman and how the kids should be taken from them. 
If the McCain campaign hadn't gone back on his word and gone so negative (and we're probably in for more come September and October), one could laugh this off as a misguided compliment to his wife.
I don't personally care who anyone votes for. Your individual vote is between you and God. My concern is when Christians start questioning another believer's faith because they vote differently. I just wanted to point out once again, that there is no such thing as a "Christian" political candidate. Such a candidate, obeying the teachings of the scriptures as they ran their campaign, would never get elected. My bet is that he/she wouldn't even get much of the "evangelical" vote since his platform would not be limited to abortion and gay rights.

of course to be fair that last one wasn't a gaffe, just a lie.

Here's another little nugget that you heard very little about:
Responding to an Israeli reporter's question Wednesday on his commitment to protect the Jewish state, Barack Obama pointed to a bill "we passed" in the U.S. Senate Banking Committee that tightens sanctions and authorizes divestment from Iran. "My committee," he called it.
Except that he isn't a member of the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs.
"Just this past week, we passed out of the out of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee - which is my committee - a bill to call for divestment from Iran as way of ratcheting up the pressure to ensure that they don't obtain a nuclear weapon," Obama said at a press conference in Sderot, Israel.

How these threads get this far I have no idea. McCain was expressing how beautiful he thought his wife was - there is no indication there was any serious intention to enter her in any contest. That is about there is to this story - it's not a 'gaffe' or an indicator of McCain's mental state. Get over it.

I never doubted that McCain thought he was paying his (trophy) wife a compliment, but rather I was amused by McCain's cluelessness as to the nature of the *contest* into which he was rhetorically suggesting she enter.
If he suggested "Gee, she's still gorgeous to be Hef's special house guest at the Mansion", would you understand the nature of the cluelessness?

How do you know he was clueless about the contest?
Because the alternative is that this venerable GOP candidate for the highest office in the land, arguably in the world, would even jest about his wife appearing in a raucus, topless *beauty* contest.
I could believe the part about him paying a sincere, albeit clueless, compliment to his wife.
I can not believe the suggestion that he paid her that *compliment* in full knowledge of what it meant.

Its gotten this far due to people defending him. The majority of posts are in that vein.

I kinda disagree. Its a gaffe because he gave his opponents ammunition to use against him. I'm not saying its fair or that he didn't know what he was doing but politics has become a highly competitive sport, give your opponent an opening and they'll take it. Much ado about nothing, sure but the much ado means more than the nothing.
And there is the story circulating about how John McCain met his wife in the first place. Saying she is beautiful just compounds the story about how he met her. Maybe its unfair, considering it happened over 30 years ago not long after his captivity in Vietnam but again fair isn't in play here.
Now that I've thought about it this was a simple and brilliant play by McCain. Endearing yourself to the locals and your wife should be a political touchdown but it turned into an interception (which is bad but certainly not the end of the world in football if the D can stop them). It should have worked beautifully but it backfired a little. The McCain campaign must be wondering if they'll ever catch a break.

Actually, I think the only people bothered by it are the blog writer, and a few liberal folks who wouldn't vote for McCain anyways who are feigning shock for the sake of casting McCain in a bad light. Other than that, no one is quite that thick.
