I heard from my associate pastor last Sunday that there was a Christian school in California that started to teach evolution. The University of California system requires that students be taught evolution in high school in order to be considered for admission to any one of the universities in the University of California system. Because of this admission standard, there is a Christian high school that started to teach evolution so that its students can be considered for admission in that university system.
I wonder if the California State University system requires this as well. When I went to a Christian high school back in the 1980s, I was not taught evolution at all. I was taught young-earth creationism. Immediately after high school, I applied to one of the colleges in the California State University system and I was accepted. I don't know if my university checked to see if I were taught evolution in high school.

I agree. There is really nothing wrong with being taught about evolution as long as it is taught as theory.

I think not being taught about evolution before hitting college is just cruelly leaving kids unprepared for what's coming their way. It makes no sense to me for a Christian school to ignore evolution and at least not prepare kids for what they'll inevitably run into in college.

First of all, a theory is not a guess or a hunch. It is a well-tested model of explanation.
The UC system wants high schools to teach evolution as the truth. If a high school student takes a science class and learns about creationism only or learns only about the criticisms of evolution, then the UC system will not accept that course as meeting the admission standard.

There was mention of the theory of evolution at my Christian high school, but I was taught that it was false. My teachers did talk about evolution, but their talk was only to criticize it or refute it.

There are plenty of Christians who absolutely believe that God is responsible for the design and existence of the universe, but also consider the possibility that evolution in some form could've been a mechanism God used for the construction of the Earth.
It seems reasonable to present the theory of evolution, with both pros and cons to adequately prepare students for what they will face. Teaching it as truth? Well, you can tell the admissions people anything they want to hear, but it's still up to that Christian teacher how to teach his/her class.
I'll tell you this much, my husband was taught pure Young Earth "science" in school, and only taught a few weak arguments against evolution. He was ripped to shreds by professors and fellow students when he tried to use science to argue his points. He was completely unprepared. It had a life long impact on him, and let's just say he no longer believe in Young Earth theories.

Lost my first post - Ughh. Maybe it evolved into another forum.
Anyway..... if it is the same case, this is not a single school but a network of Calvary Chapel Christian Schools. They actually took the state to court and won; but then lost in appeal. I assumed it was in the next round of appeals. As far as I know, I have not heard anything about them teaching evolution - I really cannot see it to be true.
If a majority of students head to public universities, then I guess it would be a good idea to teach Christians how to better defend their beliefs. In my Christian high school, almost 95% of the student body went to Christian universities. However, we did study evolution in detail, as a theory, and the FACTS that dispute those theories - Both in high school and in college. I don't even debate it anymore - I simply look at the life growing inside of me and know what I believe. If believe really want to believe something else, nothing I can say will change their minds.

Your associate pastor should recheck his facts - what you said may not be factually incorrect, but it's certainly got a bit of spin to it.
The University of California has 2 primary paths of determining eligibility for its schools (at least for in-state students). The first is that a student is in the top x% on a standardized test; the second is that he/she completes a certain set of qualifying courses that are approved by the university and meet basic academic criteria. What was at issue was that a handful of courses taught by a Calvary Chapel Christian School did not meet the University's minimum academic standards and thus, would not count towards admissions eligibility at UC schools. Rather than take the University's criticism and find ways to improve their curriculum, they went to court. The decision was pretty interesting - the school expected to win on 1st amendment grounds, so they didn't bother to make a substantive argument about the claims of poor academics until it was far too late.

My school teaches evolution in biology because the students have to know it for the state wide exam... so, to not teach it would be irresponsible and stupid. Also, I totally agree with the above posters- people have to know the theory of evolution because in uni they will be bombarded with criticism and when they try to defend themselves they'll be shot down... so what's the problem?

If your child plans on going into ANY field of science then he/she has to have proficiency in the theory of evolution in order to pass required curricula in most colleges.
It IS a theory and should be taught as such and taught proficiently. Being christian is no excuse for being ignorant of any or all scientific theories. Personally I dont believe in the young-earth creationism either as I haven't seen enough evidence to prove it. I don't care how long it took God to create the universe, and I don't recall Him asking for my advice on how He should go about it either.

What a brilliant way of putting it!
It disturbs me when other Christians somehow try to tie being a Christian to young-earth creationism (as if you can't be one without believing the other). I have a lot of problems with young earth "science", but CW is not really the place to discuss it.
