Hello!!

I normally would stick to mainstream horror books (since that is pretty much what i read the most of) when i find good ones that keep my interest. But i am willing to try new things and expand. So has anybody read any horror books by Christian Authors that they have read and enjoyed reading? or A book series?

Yeah, you probably won't find any books in your local Christian book store labelled "Horror". But you will find "Suspense" or "Drama" or perhaps even "Spiritual Warfare", things of that nature.

Ted Dekker.

Frank Peretti.

Randy Alcorn.

Those are the only names that come to mind before coffee. I have only read Peretti, and that was a long time ago.

Good luck with your search.

There's a Frank Peretti book called "The Oath", which is probably the closest to "horror" I've read from a Christian author. "The Visitation" (same author) also has its moments.

Ted Dekker's Thr3e, Showdown, and Obsessed are probably as close as you'll get. They're kinda sorta like Stepehen King, especially Showdown.

The Windows of Heaven novels by KG Powderly have strong elements of the horror genre in them, though they are primarily mytho-historic sci-fi. I've always wanted to write a horror from the Christian perspective, because if you really think about it the Bible says some scary stuff about human nature--monstrous stuff. The WoH website linked to above has a tantalizing little teaser for people like me (and apparently you) who don't think horror is just for the "worldly"...

quote:

Humanity is a race with amnesia living on a planet scarred by horrendous catastrophes that are barely remembered in our most ancient legends, myths, sacred scriptures, and “out of place” fossils, as though from the edge of a dream. Yet dreams can also be nightmares, and amnesia is born out of trauma.

If you want to check the books out though, don't get them from the publisher's site, you can get a better deal at Amazon, although the publisher's site has a better browsing tool.

Terri Blackstock and Wanda Dyson have some great books as well along the suspense/drama/horror as well. A few of the Bill Myers books can be creepy too.

Face of God by Bill Myers was a suspense book that actually goes through some Biblical prophecy and they hunt archaeologically for some things in the Bible...but then there is some bizarre stuff that happens in it as a result of who gets their hands on the Holy items.

Terri Blackstock has several series books...a really good one is the "Cape Refuge" Series.
A non-series book by Blackstock that is along these lines is called Emerald Windows.

Wanda Dyson wrote Abducted, Vanished, and Obsessed (I think--I'm not sure of the title on that one. These are a series and I can't remember the order.

I hope this helps!

Try House by Peretti and Dekker. It is pretty spooky, although a little mind numbing it has a good story.

I'm not familiar with any of the books mentioned above but I would recommend as a good 'spooky' read - and a theologically 'sound' one too I might add - a novel by Christian apologist and author Dave Hunt - 'The Archon Conspiracy' (which has been reprinted as 'The Mind Invaders') - http://www.thebereancall.org/products/b60354.php

From the back cover:

quote:

THE COLD WAR FOR PSYCHIC DOMINION HEATS UP.

Ken Inman experienced an exhilaration beyond his wildest imagination. He had made contact! Excitedly he listened:

“We’ve been watching your development—we’re here to help you take the next step. Open up. There’s nothing to fear.”

Spine-tingling action follows this incredible breakthrough in mind research. Opening doors to the unlimited vistas of the mind, the Archons share their gift of psychic power, promising a new era of peace. But then governments get involved...

Discovering the CIA and Russian Intelligence’s battle for psychic control, famed journalist Carla Bertelli delves into the power behind the Archons. Convinced they are benevolent, she is devastated when Ken renounces the paranormal and embraces Christianity.

Torn between her love for Ken and her contempt for his “demons theory,” Carla plunges into a search for the truth that becomes a desperate race against time...

Hope this is of interest...

Prophecy propaganda disguised as fiction.

I had a friend who used to pound Dave Hunt into every conversation, so I eventually read some of the book mentioned above. That was years ago so please don't ask for details. All I remember is that it kept in step with his other teachings so there were no real surprises.

Nothing personal, ex. It just wasn't for me.

No worries tysdaddy... We're cool...

Yeah I've known ppl that rant and rave about fave authors ad nauseum too... gets boring... then annoying...

I don't read much Christian fiction myself as I find a lot of it is just plain trite... but that was one I DID enjoy...

I liked it... you didn't... *shrugs* Just a case of "each to his own" I guess when it comes to writing styles...

This is a Christian one dealing with werewolves and vampires:

http://www.neverceese.com/

And it's not a typo on the title, it's a play on words, as the main character's nickname is Ceese, short for Cecelia, I think.

The scariest christian or otherwise book I ever read would have to be Hangmans Curse by Frank Peretti. But seeing how I was only 10 or 11 (I'm Thirteen) It would probaly be fine now.

Yea i dont think u will find a christian horror book because the bible says God hath not given us the spirit of fear. Therefore the spirit of fear is of the devil which destroys the purpose for writing a horror book as a christian.

I would classify the Left Behind series and Frank Peretti books as horror. Those books definitely depicted number 8 definition of horror: "terrifying or macabre events" and maybe number 1 & 4 definition as well. I still read mainstream horror authors such as Dean Koontz or Stephen King though.

The definition of horror:

-noun
1. an overwhelming and painful feeling caused by something frightfully shocking, terrifying, or revolting; a shuddering fear: to shrink back from a mutilated corpse in horror.
2. anything that causes such a feeling: killing, looting, and other horrors of war.
3. such a feeling as a quality or condition: to have known the horror of slow starvation.
4. a strong aversion; abhorrence: to have a horror of emotional outbursts.
5. Informal. something considered bad or tasteless: That wallpaper is a horror. The party was a horror.

–adjective
7. inspiring or creating horror, loathing, aversion, etc.: The hostages told horror stories of their year in captivity.
8. centered upon or depicting terrifying or macabre events: a horror movie.
–interjection
9. horrors, (used as a mild expression of dismay, surprise, disappointment, etc.)

"Left Behind" is not a Horror book; neither the movie. It was definately not made to scare anyone but to inform and make known how the end will be.

Bewise, Good point. But rnershigh has a good point as well. Left Behind can be a bit scary at times. But this is coming from a kid who got of a garfield and friends halloween movie...

Well, the Left Behind series could be defined as being a horror book. It sure scared and horrified me reading certain sections (such as the beheadings carried out by the Anti-Christ or the horror people faced when the rapture occurred). Many things can be defined as horrorifying to many people, not just the gore and blood people typically associate with the horror genre. I think too many people associate the word horror automatically with blood and gore slasher books or movies, when it can encompass a wide range of terrifying topics.

Actually, I thought the sequel, Nightmare Academy was as scary as anything Stephen King ever wrote. The scenes inside the the house were heart-pounding.

Just for the record, Never Ceese is Christian Horror/Fantasy about a vampire and a werewolf who want to be mortal again so they can once again acknowledge that which will get them to heaven. It is published by a Christian publisher and written by a Christian author. It has recieved rave reviews from both Christian and secular readers alike. Just this month it was placed on the preliminary ballot for a 2007 Bram Stoker Award. God is good! In March I will be attending the World Horror Convention with Nicholas Grabowsky author of Halloween IV and several other horror novevls, as his invited guest. That's how much he liked the book. God willing, I will be on the Final Ballot for that Stoker which will be handed out on that very weekend. That of course is up to God. So there you have it. An attempt to satisfy those who are drawn to the horror genre but don't like being exposed to things they'd rather not be exposed to.

Tons of reviews to read from at amazon. Also at www.shoutlife.com/suedent and of course www.neverceese.com

God Bless!

And thanks Shane for the heads up! Your great!

Frank Peretti's "Monster". It might be about Bigfoot. Or is it?
Wallyworld had a small paperback but the larger paperback at bookstores has the maps at the front of each chapter like the hardback. It's sort of about a Christian woman's scary adventure in the woods but there are many interesting characters.

I wouldn't characterize Frank Peretti's books as horror, but close to it. Also, if you like that sort of thing, I read a book by WG Griffeths (I think I spelled that right) called Driven that was pretty good. It may be catagorized as horror.
