Well, since I'm not sure anymore where I can post about feeding both breastmilk and formula....I'll start this thread for those of us who do both.

Since Derrek still refuses the breast, I think I'm done even trying. My husband is NOT happy about the current state of events regarding feeding. Makes me sad. I tried...I really did! But, he is now getting a combo of pumped breast milk and formula.

I talked to my doctor yesterday and he said to NOT mix the formula and breastmilk together. He said to give it as two separate bottles.

WHen we did both we didnt mix the breastmilk and formula, we did two separate bottles. He'd take what breastmilk was available them formula.

The reasoning on this I have heard is that if he doesnt finish all the breastmilk you can reheat it and it lasts longer. But if he doesnt finish all the formula you have to throw it out. WHen you add formula to breastmilk you have to use the formula "rules" on how long its good. And pouring out breastmilk HURTS!

Sharon

Not sure why you're not sure - this most certainly fits into the remit of the "When breast wasn't best" thread.

Yep, that's the only reason. If you're confident that the baby is going to take it all, or are prepared to throw away what's left. then there's no problem at all mixing the two.

What's he not happy about?

Would he like to try breast feeding?

I find it strange when husbands have an opinion on things like this. My husband was the most involved hands-on dad you could ever have (and he took to parenting far more quickly and naturally than I did) but he just let me decide about things and never questioned what I was doing, just supported me.

Oh and when we did formula we didnt mix it because I didnt want Isaac to think his breastmilk tasted funny, I wanted it to be like, "ok, two feeding a day i get this kind of milk." Not "why does my milk taste funny" Maybe it didnt make any difference, but thats how we did it.

Sheesh...I just pumped and got almost 5 oz out of each breast. That is the most yet. Maybe pumping will last longer than I thought it will.

That is a lot. I NEVER got that much total in ANY of my pumpings. Way to go!

If you are consistent and committed to your pumping it can last a long time. I exclusively pumping with little to no nursing for three months. Then pumped about half the time for another 3-4 months. I know some moms who have done it for a year or so, I dont think I could have done it that long.

Oh, have you heard the tip about putting your pump parts in the fridge between pumpings so you dont have to clean them? That was the single best tip I ever got.

I pumped for 3 months for David but my supply could not keep up with him. I pump after James' first feed of the morning and get 4-6 ounces. If I pump any other time a day I don't get much at all.

Yeah, I didn't get as much last night....but I sure did again this morning. What is it about mornings that make the milk jugs more full?

Maybe you didn't see my question asking you what Ray's not happy about?

For the same reason it bothers me that breastfeeding is not working out for us....because of all the benefits to baby.

Derrek is getting some breastmilk, so he is getting the benefits.

What are your particular concerns, sharon?

My ds was half breastmilk half formula-fed at the beginning, then fully bottle-fed from 3 months onwards; my dd from 6 weeks onwards. Both were happy healthy rarely-unwell bright babies, toddlers, children and teens. Excellent immune systems, strong teeth, very quick to learn......

I can appreciate a sense of loss about breastfeeding not working out, I felt a failure myself when it didn't work out with Jonathan. I felt a failure for not being able to deliver vaginally, then a failure for not coping well with all his crying, then a failure for breastfeeding not working out. But, looking back, I can see that Jonathan didn't miss out on anything by not being breastfed longer than he was.

I can understand your sense of disappointment and loss - I'm just struggling to understand Ray's here, because he must surely know how upsetting this is for you, and him expressing that he's not happy about things seems to be making you feel even worse. Sure, Derrek matters, but you matter too.

Is Derrek taking the formula ok? Not getting colic or being constipated?

He is taking the formula well enough. I think he is a bit constipated today though. We will see how it goes and it if continues, I'll try the soy formula.

He could just be one of those babies who gets constipated alot. Isaac used to regularly goes days between poops and he was breastfeed 100% at that time. Docs said it was normal. If his tummy is tolerating it otherwise I wouldnt worry too much about switching formula. When he'd start acting uncomfy or I felt it was "too long" I'd give him 1/3 of a glycerin suppository. He grew out of it by 4 months or so (but that was "real" age, not "adjusted" so I doubt your LO would have trouble that long.)

sharon,

A little constipation is quite normal when a baby first has formula. I'd suggest giving it a lot more time before switching types, because that could in itself cause him problems. Did your doctor suggest changing to the soy formula?

Doctor said that constipation could be a sign of an allergy. We have our one month appt on Wednesday, so I'd probably wait until then to talk with him first.

Hm..I have never heard that constipation would a sign of an allergy. I hear that formula can make babies constipated, especially at first, because of the iron content. (Which is another reason we had constipation issues at first because he was on a multi vitamin/iron supplement)

Sharon

My understanding is that babies frequently get constipated on formula, especially at the start, simply because it is harder to digest. As they get used to it, it gets better.

Yeah, it's usually the iron that causes the issue, not so much an allergy. I would try a probiotic formula before doing soy, but that's just me.

Sharon, if you really worried then it's not to late to make it work. I weaned(well, stopped nursing, I had no milk left) Gabby at 4 months, so obviously there is no judgment from me but Derick is still really young and it's not to late to "fix" thing if you so desire.

Sharon, I agree with the dr about constipation sometimes being a sign of allergy. I have a niece who was allergic to milk; she was formula fed for the first year of her life. When she turned 2, they found out that she was allergic to milk (as well as several other foods), and to this day, her main symptom of her dairy allergy is constipation.

Usually, it is the iron content of the formula that is constipating, but the drs have realized that sometimes it is an allergy.

I personally wouldn't switch my child over to soy just because of a "sometimes". Constipation is really so common for formula fed babies - if every one that was constipated switched over then they'd practically all be on soy! It really depends on how serious the constipation is and if there are any other symptoms. Massage can help constipation and usually the baby just acclimatises.

myka, I'm surprised they left it two years before testing for allergies. Allergies (unlike intolerances) produce immediate reactions so she must have been showing symptoms before then. But I guess that's for another thread!

I wouldn't switch to soy just because of the other issues related to soy. We don't eat a lot of soy for good reason. So I would probably try every other kind before soy.

I'm sooooooo excited! Derrek had 2 oz of pumped breast milk and still seemed hungry. (it was about time for a bigger meal anyhow) So, since he seemed pretty content, although still hungry, I decided to see if he might take to the breast. And...he did! So, perhaps the trying to feed when he was in a frenzy and hungry meant he would not latch on.

I still plan to do some supplementing with formula, espcially in the middle of the night. He seems to stay fuller, longer, with the formula which means more sleep for all of us at night.
