My district starts back Aug. 25 and a few around here are starting back Aug. 18. I hate this new schedule of starting at the end of August instead of the second week in August... I understand that it saves the school money on cooling costs, but I don't like having exams after Christmas break. It's hard on the kids and we end up losing a week of instruction time in the process. I also don't like getting out in June instead of in May.

This year we start on August 18th. The district is looking at a modified calendar for year-round schooling, but it didn't pass for 2009-2010. It may change in 2010-2011, though.

Since Atlanta needs cooling up until November on some days, they start in the second week of August, 'cause it doesn't make much difference anyways. I think they do have exams before Christmas, which is nice.

We will start back August 20th, about the same time we started back last year. We will then be done the 5th of June unless of course we have to many snow days again. I just wish they would work it out to where spring break would coincide with Easter, but I don't think that's ever going to happen. The nice thing is that the semester break comes right before Christmas break so the kids are stressed out over break. Blessings, Garsy

The state legislature, responding from pressure from the Chamber of Commerce and the Tourism Lobby, decided to remove local control and passed a law that said school had to start after Labor Day.

We start in Sept for the same reason that Steve gave. The state decided that it wasn't in the best interest of tourism and the highschool kids who were employees of businesses that benefit from that tourism to start school before Labor day when we still have people visiting us until the Labor Day weekend is over.

We start August 19. Semester break comes at Christmas break. This year spring break coincided with the quarter break and Easter. Spring break generally is at the nine week break, but not often Easter. Dee

ORIGINAL: artemis Do you know if you have more breaks throughout the year than we do or if kids in the UK just attend more days of school than in the US? I think we have ~180 days on the school calendar here. Ooooh, hmmm, never actually added it up. They have three terms, each consisting of (I think) 12 weeks. Each of those terms also has a week's break in it (called half-term holiday). So that makes 11 x 5 = 55 x 3 = 165. There's also Good Friday, Easter Monday, and Labour Day to come out of that, so that makes 162 days. So, in general (there is some variation with private schools), yes, children in the UK attend fewer days of school than in the US.

We liked getting out EARLIER in may, instead of the first week of june. We start back on August 25 (texas)...and they "standardized" their dates, as well.

We start Aug. 11. Then they get a week break in Oct. Then two weeks at christmas. One week in spring which is occasionally Easter, but never the same as the college. Done the end of May.

Mine go back on August 18. We have a week for Thanksgiving, 3 weeks for Christmas and New Year, 1 week for Easter. They finish the second week in June. We have 180 days. They used to have early release on Thursdays but they have stopped that. So they will pick up some extra school hours. My kids are not happy about that. Kim Q

Like Flowerz who is also from Canada, the day after Labour Day. I believe that's a pretty standard date here in Canada, with the exception of a few year round schools. (Someone can correct me if I'm wrong).

August 18th. That's actually the latest we have started school here. Before it was the first week of August.
