We're talking about Little House, so I thought we also might want to start a conversation about The Waltons.
I just got the first season on DVD, and I'm having a great time re-living it. It's even better than I remembered!

I love The Waltons!
I think it's better than Little House- even though Little House was very, very good!
I just watched The Cradle yesterday. I had never seen that episode before. I didn't get to finish it though, so I saved it on DVR.

In fact, Hallmark took The Waltons off the air for a little while. I was one of the viewers who e-mailed them to bring it back. I sent them a thank you e-mail when I saw that they brought it back.

It's not on in the afternoon or evening, though. Bummer. I remember seeing the promos on Hallmark, and I think I remember that it's on in the morning. Is that right? And only one episode too. Whereas, there's two episodes of Little House!
In the first episode of the Waltons, called The Foundling, the little deaf girl's mother was someone I thought I recognized, but I couldn't put my finger on it until the very end - it was Miss Beadle from Little House! Talk about a coincidence!

I also think the era is really interesting, the Depression. And the costs of things. In the episode I just watched, I think it was the third, they paid $12 for insurance, $2 for their light bill.
I'm noticing how much the kids run around in their bare feet. I guess that's just what they did back then, in rural areas anyway. But how dangerous! My parents never put up with that.
I'm also really developing a deeper appreciation for Ellen Corby and Will Geer.

I love the Waltons! I never saw the Cradle before either. It really made me cry. Here, they are on twice in the morning, eight and nine o'clock on Hallmark. I wish they had it on later, too!

It's on at 8 am and 9 am. I record it on DVR when I can't be home.

If you think about it, they were actually much better off than many depression-era families. They had a radio, telephone, indoor plumbing, electricity and a truck. My neighbors were born in the '20s and didn't have any of that stuff growing up.

That was very common back then. In fact, I'm 42 and it was common when I was growing up. In the warm weather, shoes were for whimps- unless you were going in a store or something, then you had the health codes that the stores had to follow.
My dad is 67. He said that when he was growing up they used to get a new pair of shoes for school and that was it. During warm weather they went barefoot- even in the stores.
My neighbors even went to school barefoot in warm weather.

The feeling of family that you get watching this program is something that is as rare as hens teeth today. Most family sit-coms etc. the father is an idiot and the mom feels that she deserves a medal for putting up with him. A far cry from "Father Knows Best".. Anyone ever heard of that old tv show????
Little House was great too. You could always tell when Michael Landon wrote one you either laughed like crazy or cried your eyes out.... GREAT SHOWS... both!

Actually, the telephone came later. They don't have it in these first episodes I'm watching. But yeah, you're right about the other stuff.

Actually, the telephone came later. They don't have it in these first episodes I'm watching. But yeah, you're right about the other stuff.

I vaguely remember a later episode where it was a gift from Olivia to John. Until then, they went down to Ike's to use the phone.

I don't have much time to watch tv now, but I used to really like the Waltons.
I am 36 and I grew up only wearing shoes when I had to. I was so irritated when I started to have put on shoes just to go to the general store across the street from where I grew up. Even now, I only wear shoes when I have to.
I remember when they got their phone too.
The family seemed really real to me as i was growing up. John was like mine and other dad's that I knew. With what felt like real stregnths and weaknesses. You don't find that too often on TV.

John Walton was not always right and he owned up to his mistakes. IMO that is a real character strength.

I have all 5 seasons on DVD so far and am awaiting the release of the remaining 4 seasons. Some great episodes in this series. A reminder of how simpler life was back then compared to now. I watched this when I was a kid and remember the episodes as I watch them now. TV at its finest.

Has anyone read the book the show was based on? Spencer's Mountain? Good book.
I tuned into an episode last week and they were using a ouiye (sp?) board so I turned it off.

Me too! Wasn't it neat to see John Ritter as Rev. Fordwick again? Oh, this is so much fun!
I'm doing my best to "notice" things this time around that I didn't before, and appreciate stuff more. Like just how really neat that house is. At least to me. And what a really lovely relationship between Grandma and Grandpa. I'm tellin' ya, Ellen Corby and Will Geer were so underrated.

I liked the relationships between the kids. They had their squabbles, but the fact that they loved each other was always apparent.

I have the first 6 seaons on dvd. I am still going through season 1. I loved the show because it was family oriented. I hope all seasons come out and the TV movies that came out after the show.

I watch it every weekday morning along with Little House on Hallmark....I've also gotten into watching "Seventh Heaven" which I never watched when it was originally on.
