Hypothyroidism was diagnosed 2 years after the birth of my second son. Symptoms included appalling tiredness, depression, dizzyness and disorientation. I found it very hard to cope. I am now stable with meds but it has taken a good year.

I'm not pregnant - yet, but I would love another child. However I am worried about whether it may trigger my thyroid again. I just don't think I could manage going through all that again. Although stable I still tire easily. So maybe I am just mad even considering another child.

I have spent the last 6 months grieving and then accepting that maybe my quiver is full with the 2 wonderful children I already have - and then I have 'good' days where I have bundles of energy and hope that maybe it is possible.

I just wondered if anyone else had experience. I know the books say that thyroid isn't an issue as long as you are being monitored and treated - but I also know that treatment can take months to kick in and if my body does go 'wonky' again during pregnancy that's a long time to feel rubbish for when I already have 2 other children to think about.

PS this is not a quiver ful debate

hiya

Actually, it doesn't take months to "kick in". It does take 2-3 months to properly settle down (so that the effect can be reliably measured), but you're likely to feel some benefit almost immediately.
I know this through having gradually had my thyroxine increased from an initial 25mcg up to 200mcg (and now back down to 150mcg, curiously).

Out of curiosity, what dosage of thyroxine are you on now?

Btw, I know that Sideways has had some thyroid issues in the past, and was waiting for those to settle before she tried for another baby. She is pregnant now, not sure whether or not she is on thyroxine. So she may be able to help you.

Hi Manda

I'm now on 100mcg. I think I've been stable for about 4/5 months now. I do still find I have to 'pace myself' during the day though - and I don't do mornings anymore (I used to be a morning person). Having said that my 3 year old is still up in the night, I rarely get a whole night sleep since he has eczema and it tends to wake him - then once I'm awake I find it hard to settle back.

I also figure that by the time the baby is born my youngest will be at school and so I will get a chance to rest during the day - when I had ds2 I also had a demanding 2 1/2 year old - as soon as the baby went down for a nap the toddler needed my attention (he quit his nap at 21/2). i was just worn to a frazzle and constantly felt like I wasn't meeting anyone's needs (shudders to remember).

My other concern would be that with both pregancies I had severe morning sickness (every half an hour around the clock for the first 5 months) - I guess they can give thyroxine intravenously if I'm not able to keep my tablets down???

Hopefully Sideways will give some insight later.

Yup, I was diagnosed with low thyroid during my first pregnancy, and finally settled on 112mcg of Levothroid. I was tested every 4 weeks until I stabilized, after that I've been tested every 12 weeks, and my thyroid has remained stable during this pregnancy. I am pregnant and tired a lot, but with only one who usually naps during the day, I do get a midday rest, though. I often start to crash around 6pm, but my dH is often home between 6 and 7, so he often helps in the evening.

I'm pretty tired now, actually, since we went to visit my mom, and I didn't get a midday rest. Nathan only catnaped in the car, but today is not a normal day. He's almost 18 months old now, and he'll be around 21 months when the baby is born. I'm sure it'll be very difficult, but I do have some help.

Nathan's naps and bedtime are pretty stable at this point, and he almost always sleeps through the night (even if I don't always sleep through the night), but the thought of a toddler and newborn is a bit scary, even though I did sign up for this.

Actually, during my pregnancy, I was on 75mcg of Levothroid; it was after I delivered that my required dosage shot up to 112mcg's, but they wanted to increase me gradually, so it took a while to settle at 112mcg. It's entirely possible that I could need a higher dosage after this baby, but my doctors said that if my thyroid levels drop again they want me in for more complicated tests. I guess they were not happy with just constantly increasing my dosages, but I'm not sure what other choice there is.

Sorry if I'm not very coherent, but I'll be happy to answer any questions you still have.

I don't think you're mad for considering having another child.

It's hard sometimes to know what to do for the best isn't it? Have you spoken with your doctor about this? I seem to recall she has been pretty helpful and understanding in the past.

Regarding morning sickness ~ have you tried taking or doing anything for this? I have a friend who is currently pregnant (#4) and she has always been sick all the way through every pregnancy. She's learnt that 5-6 small light meals a day help a little. I also gave her some ginger sweets ~ ginger is supposed to help with morning sickness (and some other sicknesses too) ~ and she said they helped a lot (they're called gin-gins by the way and seems most health stores sell them ~ she found the hard ones the best as she could suck them).

A lot of meds are absorbed pretty quickly and you may well find that enough thyroxine is absorbed before you're sick, or that your body isn't affected by it the way it is by food.

And playing devil's advocate... you could decide to not have another child and find your meds need adjusting. Mine, through I'm not pregnant, has been upped 3 times this year (now on 275mcg).

One tricky thing about Levothroid, it needs to be taken on an empty stomach, then you need to wait an hour before eating. This can be difficult when morning sickness is exacerbated by an empty stomach. With my first baby, I ate a light breakfast as soon as I woke up, waited 2 hours, took my meds, then waited 1 hour before a mid-morning snack. These days I don't have any issues with morning sickness, so I just take my meds as soon as I wake up, then wait an hour.

Any vitamins had to be taken 4 hours after the Levothroid, so I take my vitamin at night.

In my experience, the homeopathic remedy Pulsatilla is brilliant for morning sickness/nausea. I was really bad when expecting our first child - couldn't even get out of bed without being overwhelmed by dizziness, nausea and wanting to throw up. He chatted with me on the phone, got my husband to go out and get some homeopathic Pulsatilla for me, and I was up and about within half an hour of taking them.

And because the tablets are so tiny, they could be taken on an empty stomach and then the thyroxine taken afterwards.

The other thing is that if you are slightly less sick at night, then the thyroxine could be taken just before you went to bed instead of first thing in the morning.

If thyroxine is like the thyroid medicines I've taken, then your stomach must be empty, and it really is strongly recommended you take it in the morning. I wouldn't advise going to bed on an empty stomach.

You'd still need to find a time to take your regular vitamin, and I'd say if the homeopathic medicine takes 30 minutes to work, then at least that 30 minutes to give some spacing in between the two medications.

Thyroxine is the actual thryoid drug name - Levothroid or Levothyroid, or one of a million other names, is just a brand name.

Actually you will find that it's fine to take your thyroxine last thing at night. And if you've had your evening meal, say, at 6-7pm, your stomach will be empty enough by 11pm or midnight.

It does not matter at all to your body what time you take your medication. The people who advise taking it in the morning only do so because *some people* become wakeful after taking their thyroxine, and obviously you wouldn't want that to happen at bedtime - but only some people, not all. For me, I know that if I take my thyroxine first thing in the morning, I still only feel awake after midday, so it doesn't affect me that way.

Some people do better for taking their thyroxine late afternoon or evening - some people can't tolerate it on an empty stomach. Taking it on an empty stomach really only improves absorption/effectiveness - taking it with food actually apparently only reduces absorption by up to approx 20%, so that's not actually losing out by much.

I'd say it's totally fine to experiment with the timing of the medication, and then stick to what suits best (and tell the doctor). That way, when the TFTs are done, he will now what's being taken and when and, if necessary, can adjust the dose slightly accordingly.

HenriettasCat, I honestly think you will be totally fine. Firstly, you may not be sick anyway. Secondly, you will be able to identify which times of day (or night) are best suited to you for taking your thyroxine, and then work things out with your doctor. Don't worry, it will all be OK!

Yes it needs to be taken on an empty stomach, but I've spoken to both my doctor and pharmacist about it and none says it's necessary to wait an hour before eating. I don't always eat breakfast, but I try ~ and I don't generally wait an hour ~ sometimes just 15 minutes. (For the record, I've probably missed more breakfasts than I've eaten over the past 6 months, so I doubt my probs with my thyroid are connected with not waiting for an hour.)

I'd agree too. You may find that speaking with a pharmacist is also useful initially because meds are their area. I know that I use Boots and have got wonderful advice from speaking with the pharmacists there.

Me too. Don't rule out having another baby without speaking with both your doctor and pharmacist.

Oh yes, I think it's totally doable to have a 3rd baby if thyroid is the only thing holding you back. It's just something else you need to think about, that's all.

Thanks for your replies. I'd never thought about the time of day I take levothyroxine - I usually take it at night before I go to bed (a couple of hours after food) since the mornings are so hectic in our house I am very likely to forget. It doesn't stop me sleeping though - I'm usually asleep within seconds of my head touching the pillow!

Manda - I hadn't heard of the homeopathic medicine you mentioned. I might try that if I ever get that sick again. None of the usual remedies (peppermint, ginger) worked at all. My GP gave me tablets which kept enough water down so that I didn't have to be hospitalised but it didn't stop the feeling that I was constantly on the edge of barfing. Any mention of food or smells and I was off.

I really would love another baby. Dh would as well but it is just my health that he is concerned about. Really the only thing that I find hard is the tiredness - and that could well be down to my age and lifestyle rather than thyroid.

Sideways - its great that you are doing well with your pregancy and very encouraging.

Ginger made me worse, and as for anything minty It was always a major challenge for me if I could clean my teeth without retching as even just the smell of the toothpaste would set me off, let alone the taste!

Interestingly though, I had none of that with my second pregnancy (when I had my dd). I didn't know it was going to be a girl, as in those days, you didn't know the gender, but maybe, if you have a girl, you won't be so sick anyway!

Lol who knows - I was told that having a girl makes sickness more likely. My mum was also very sick with all her pregnancies - so maybe its just genetic.

I do remember my first midwife visit. She went through her list of things to discuss and then came to diet - at the mention of food I excused myself and made a dash for the loo. When I came back into the room I took one look at her and had to run again - she quickly put the pamplet to the bottom of the pile and said "I'll let you read that in your own time, when you are ready - oh by the way, the last lady I had who was as sick as you was expecting twins!"

I think we were almost a little dissapointed when we had the scan and saw only one in there

HC ~ question for you...

Let's say you decided not to have another baby. How would you feel in 5 or 10 years time if your thyroid probs were still stable. How much would you regret your decision not to have a baby? Would it detract from the joy of having your 2 children already?

You may well have problems if you decide to have another baby, but look at how long they will go on for. You've been diagnosed and treated and should you decide to have another baby, your condition will be closely monitored.
