Good morning friends, This was my daily reading scriptures today and it confused me. For several years now I've heard, and read, people saying "Even so, come Lord Jesus" - but isn't this scripture saying not to hope for that? I know, and agree, that there are way too many souls out there that still need to know Jesus, and the longer He waits, the bigger chance some of those souls will come home - but I almost kinda yearn for Him to come anyway. Then I remember all my family members that would be left behind and I feel terrible that I'd walk away and let them spend eternity that way. Anyway, care to discuss this scripture? quote:
18Woe to you who desire(A) the day of the LORD! Why would you have the day of the LORD? (B) It is darkness, and not light, 19(C) as if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him, or went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall, and a serpent bit him. 20(D) Is not the day of the LORD darkness, and not light, and gloom with no brightness in it? 21(E) "I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. 22(F) Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; and the peace offerings of your fattened animals, I will not look upon them. 23Take away from me the noise of your songs; to(G) the melody of your harps I will not listen. 24But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. 25(H) "Did you bring to me sacrifices and offerings during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel? 26(I) You(J) shall take up Sikkuth your king, and Kiyyun your star-god—your images that you made for yourselves, 27(K) and I will send you into exile beyond Damascus," says the LORD, whose name is(L) the God of hosts.

There are two elements to the Day of the Lord - blessings for those who follow Him, and judgment on those who do not. Given what verses 21-23 say here, I would say it's clear that this is a warning from God to those who do not follow Him. So, from their perspective, the Day of the Lord will be a very bad thing indeed. Which is why we ought to be working to make sure as many people are following Him as possible. : )

It is like being in a burning building. Sure it is hot and hard to breath, but one needs to be sure where one is going to land before one jumps. There might be a way of getting through it with the resources at hand. In which case it is best to be focusing on working the problem and not just hoping to be rescued.

Great Topic. I attended a church where the pastor prayed for Jesus to come back every Sunday. Whenever he would pray that prayer I would think of the exact verse you posted in Amos. When I was little I would often pray/desire that God would part the skies and scoop us out of here, now I just want my family, in-laws, and others saved before it arrives. For Christian's the coming of Jesus is a relief. For unbelievers it is death.

I have known believers that pray constantly for Messiah to come back so that all the sinners in their lives will go to - you know. They seriously want God to condemn them all. Passages like this are a warning against this. There are often opposing truths presented in scripture. With maturity, one can start to discern which truth applies in any given situation. We are to long for HIS appearing, but we are also to be mindfull that it will bring destruction to many.
