I am ministering to a female lady who lives in my neighbourhood who wants to quit smoking but to no avail. She says she smokes when she is stressed. Does any one know of a good book or any other tool that help people to quit smoking?

She says that she would want to purchase that famous chewing gum that helps smokers to quit. I wonder if someone used those chewing gums and proved to be good tool for quitting smoking. I gave her some resources hoping to be of help to her.

You need to scroll down and check out the quitting smoking support thread. I'm pretty sure it's all been discussed in there.

I hear those patches work very well.

Thank you Limulus for your feedback! I will mention those patches for her and see what she thinks. She seems to be determined to do whatever it takes to quit smoking.

Then she simply needs to quit and choose not to smoke. While patches can help, it also prolongs the nicotine withdrawal. Those who quit cold turkey are the most successful at staying quit.

Thanks stella for this invaluable piece of info. I just hope she would be able to quit cold turkey since she mostly smokes when she is stressed.

There are lots of ways to cope with stress, but she'll need to find something that she can do during a crave. For example, she might write in a journal or take a short walk. Or maybe just breathe deeply for a few minutes. The craves will pass, but there is no magic bullet. Just choosing not to put a cigarette in your mouth.

I actually took a course given by the American Cancer Society on quitting. A couple of hint when a craving hits: 1) WAIT. It sounds simplistic, but wait five minutes after the craving hits. If you still want that cigarette after five minutes, go ahead. But odds are the craving will go away. 2) Deep Breathing: Inhale slowly, taking five seconds to fill your lungs. Hold it for five seconds. Then slowly exhale, taking five seconds to empty your lungs. Repeat three time. One they don't mention that worked for me (I smoked for more than 30 years): PRAY. Matthew wasn't kidding when he wrote all things are possible with God. This is how I finally quit, I prayed for God's help. Not a cure, just help. And of course He was faithful.

Thanks for the tips both of you. She says the other day she could not sleep or woke up early in the morning and the 1st thing she did was fix herself a cup of coffee with....a cigarette and this is how craving starts with her coffee. I sympathize with this bc mom had the same problem and in fact many people associate cannot enjoy their coffee without lighting their cigarette. It's like a duo that must go together.

There is also a group that I go to at my church that is started in many other churches. It is for all types of addictions/issues. Very encouraging to know that other Christians have problems too and that with Jesus Christ we can overcome them. They probably have some groups meeting in your city. http://www.celebraterecovery.com/?page_id=7

She says the other day she could not sleep or woke up early in the morning and the 1st thing she did was fix herself a cup of coffee with....a cigarette Most of the cigarettes she smokes are probably more out of habit now than from a craving. Cup of coffee, driving, after a meal, when stressed, all these are habits, not addictions, and can be broken by using some mental toughness. To quote Nancy Reagan, "Just Say No". She has to make a determined effort to cut these cigarettes out of her day. She literally has to force herself to not light that butt. Stick it in her mouth is okay, but don't light it. Once those habitual smokes are out of the schedule she should find it easier to put them down for good. Limulus' suggestion of a support group is another good tool.

The following is an awesome program to kick the cigs: http://www.settingcaptivesfree.com/breath_life/ They have mentors that see you through the program via email. It is ALL about God and it is free...can it get any better?!
