Here's a quote my dad sent me. I can remember reading this in high school Civics class. What if Americans had the resolve to put this into practice? "The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed... lest Rome become bankrupt!" - Marcus Tullius Cicero, 55 BC, Roman statesman, lawyer, political theorist, philosopher and Roman constitutionalist

Man tries to learn from history but more often than not usually fails. Even when he does, he tends to make matters far worse. I probobly should brush up on my history, but it strikes me that Cicero was way ahead of his time since Rome did not collpase till a century or two after him as Rome became more of a welfare state, and "redistributed its wealth" to the extent that there were more people taking from the empire's resources, than were contrbuting to it.

More recent history points to the Soviet Union which went bankrupt in the late 80's. When did we decide that America should take responsibility for the rest of the world? Help as you can, but if you're not properly helping your own you soon lose the ability to help others.

I never realized that Republicans and Democrats existed in ancient Rome almost 2,000 years ago!

Perhaps a few. But far too many have become dependant on that help. In turn, the government has created employees that are dependant on those who are dependant of those services. We''ve lost the ability to help others because we keep sending them to "programs" that don't truly help them. Jesus told us to make disciples, not dependants.
